《ADEPTAVERSE》28 - Empire of Darkness Arc: Eradication Part 1
Advertisement
Black Morrow Prison. The largest and most secure prison in Wrathak, the country of the Wolven. It has a total of forty floors which act as wards. Said wards are long corridors each containing thirty cells which are situated on each side of the corridor with around one meter between each cell. There is a huge spiral staircase that is used as transportation between these wards.
Today, Eradication will happen.
...
The sky was pitch black, making the streets of Skarka City illuminated only by either passing cars or street lights. It was raining as well, making the Wolven citizens either taking shelter inside their home or walking around with umbrellas at increased speeds.
The rain almost drowned out the faint sound of roof tiles being ran on, which were coming from a single figure in a black hooded raincoat. The figure then stopped and crouched, taking out a pair of binoculars and looking at a large building that was fenced off by thick, tall concrete walls. It was a prison.
The figure lowered their binoculars and put them away, placing their right index finger on an earpiece in their right ear.
"The guards have rotated."
The figure stood up straight on top of the building they were on, looking down at the streets. "Still some civilians though."
A voice rang out from the earpiece.
"Got it. We will commence..."
...be careful, Alt."
"I will, Hugo." Altara made his way down the building by sliding down a thick rain gutter, making his way to the prison walls where a large gate was situated. Altara leaned next to it...waiting.
A wolven guard came out from a corner next to Altara wearing a simple guard uniform. They were doing their pants up, suggesting they most likely finished urinating not long ago. They noticed the hooded Altara and flinched, their eyes flicking to Altara as their breath hitched. "S-Sir..you are not permitted to be here. Please leave!" They exclaimed with a nervous yet demanding tone.
Altara glanced at the guard from under his hood. "Behind schedule?"
"W-What?" The guard heard Altara but before he could ask more Altara took out a single knuckleduster from his coat, enchanting it with lightning and thrusting it into the guard's throat. The guard spasmed and fell over. Altara quickly disenchanted the knuckleduster before the rain could interfere with the lightning and bent over, checking the guard's pulse.
The gates then clicked open.
"Now, Alt!"
Altara finished hiding the unconscious body nearby and ran through the gate, making his way behind a parked car inside. He peeked over the car to look around. It was a simple parking lot, a bit further ahead and to his right was a control tower. Altara ducked back down and spoke into his earpiece.
"Was that it??"
"Ergo's grapple hooks did us good, heh!"
"No, Hugo. The hack. Was it really that easy?"
"I mean Verse is a good hacker. Keep pushing on, we will meet you inside. Remember, this hour is the hour with the least amount of guards."
"Least amount of guards...right." Altara peeked up at the control tower and saw a guard at its window. Altara sighed and waited patiently for the guard to face away, quickly sprinting towards the control tower and climbing silently up the metal spiral stairs. Altara silently tried the door at the top but it was locked. He exhaled calmly and knocked three times.
"Yeah yeah..."
The guard spoke out.
The door clicked a few times and it opened up, the unsuspecting guard getting a fist in the face by Altara causing him to fall backward. He bled from his nose and coughed, looking up at Altara who swiftly stunned him with the lightning enchanted knuckleduster. Altara quickly dashed to a console and looked up at a set of screens attached to it, speaking into his earpiece.

"Which ward was she in again?"
"Thirty-Eighth." Verse answered.
"Got it."
Altara went to the cameras of the thirty-eighth ward, going through all the corridor cameras.
"The cells themselves don't have cameras but we could use this to see if there are any guards..and as it stands there are no guards in any of the ward's corridors...
...but where is Konstantine?"
Altara asked himself as he kept browsing through.
"Thirty-Eighth Ward is clear. No guards."
"Keh, idiots."
Hugo mumbled as Altara saw Hugo kick down the door to the Thirty-Eighth Ward, over his shoulder was his summoned battleaxe. He walked heavily through the corridor, peeking into every cell he passed by. Altara switched the camera to the one facing the door Hugo was headed too.
"Hugo, through that door is a singular room. It's usually used as a torture room." Verse spoke through the communications.
"How big is the room?" Hugo asked with a slight frown.
"I would estimate 10x10 meters. The ceiling reaches up around three."
"Cheers."
Hugo adjusted the collar of his parka with his free hand before stopping right in his path before the door.
"Shit."
RATATATATATATATATATATATA!
Bullets suddenly rained through the door directly at Hugo, one hitting him in the shoulder and one in the rib. He coughed and fell on his back, summoning a shield instead of his axe in order to give it more power. The bullets slammed into the shield rapidly as Hugo grunted due to the pain of the bullet wounds, getting to his feet and grimacing. He growled.
"HUGO!"
Altara shouted in worry over the telecom, Hugo grimaced quickly turned off the telecom with a slap to the ear, sprinting in a flash straight through the door. Once inside he saw three heavily armed guards with assault rifles hiding behind sandbags at the back of the room. Hugo's eyes narrowed to the three and as soon as they ran out of ammo he desummoned the shield he was using to deflect the bullets and replaced it with his battleaxe. He jumped over the sandbags and landed behind the three as they were reloading.
The armored guards were wearing helmets, causing Hugo to aim for their necks which only had chainmail protecting them. He swung towards one horizontally just before he landed causing complete decapitation, the other guards quickly backed away from Hugo after seeing how fast he was, they started to fire again. Hugo swiftly crouched behind the sandbags to avoid the spray. The bullets started to pierce through the sandbags causing Hugo to frown.
"Idiots will just keep going.."
And with that, the guards ran out of bullets. As soon as they started to reload Hugo jumped out of cover, spinning around and throwing his enchanted battleaxe at the two guards. The head of the axe slammed into one's chest whilst the other simply got hit by the handle, causing them to stumble back into a wall behind him. Hugo quickly ran up to the guard and desummoned his axe which was lodged into the dead now dead guard's chest. The guard attempted to reload as Hugo quickly approached him but was instead met with a bolt to the hand which pierced the armor. Hugo stood over the guard with a summoned heavy crossbow, the guard screamed in pain and dropped his rifle straight away.
"FUCKER!"
The wolven screamed under his helmet as Hugo sent another bolt into his shoulder which also pierced the armor.
"GYARHH!"
"WHERE IS SHE!!?"
Hugo yelled at the guard as another bolt appeared inside the crossbow.

"I-I ain't telling you shit..Homstalan scu-"
SLICH!
"ARGGHH!"
Another bolt was sent into the man's groin.
"THEY MOVED HER! TWO FLOORS..TWO WARDS DOWN!! THEY HAVE HER IN THE TORTURE ROOM THERE LIKE THIS ONE! THIRTY-SIXTH WARD!!"
Hugo desummoned the crossbow, instead summoning a heavily armored boot. It was more like a club...he stomped the guards armored head against the wall. Completely crushing it.
Hugo soon walked out of the empty torture room, turning his communication back on.
"Hugo?? I lost you for a second there. Is everything okay? I see you walking out of the chamber...Konstantine there??"
Altara asked, desperate for an answer.
"If she was in there I would have her...there was nothing but guards. They have moved her two floors down to Ward Thirty-Six."
Hugo said with a sigh, looking down at the bullet wounds in his rib and shoulder. He quickly searched the inside of his parka.
"Everyone..status report."
Hugo ordered as he took a potion out his inside pocket, pouring it on his wounds. It effectively reversed the wounds back to their normal state. The potion itself had a creme color to it with the label "Jolene's Ultimatum".
"Nothing outside of the prison, people going about as normal on the streets."
Radius answered as he scoped out the prison exterior from a distance with his sniper rifle.
"Rooftop is still secured, no choppers landing."
Ergo answered as she crouched on the roof hiding under a helipad.
"All camera feedback is being redirected to the tower Altara is in."
Verse answered as she was crouched in the prison's server room, hiding behind a bunch of boxes with her laptop.
...
"Kry? You secured the boats to leave??" Hugo frowned with concern as Kry failed to give his report.
Kry's communicator turned on, footsteps rang out as well as heavy breaths.
"Altara ran from the tower outside straight inside as soon as he heard where Konstantine had been moved! I'm going to try and reach him now!"
"How do you know?! You are meant to be on the bottom floor securing the boats for us to leave down the Zone 16 River!" Hugo asked, slamming his fist against the nearby wall as he looked up at the camera Altara was watching him from.
"Because I heard an explosion not long after you told us many floors above. I presume Altara blew into the side of the prison from a balcony or something..."
"..Of course..he has a grappling hook too..I told him to use it if only if he had to escape back over the wall that surrounded the prison outside." Hugo sighed and adjusted his ponytail as he started walking to the door he came from which led to a spiral staircase.
"I'm going after Alt...This isn't normal. There aren't enough bloody guards!"
...
Altara was already in the Thirty Sixth Ward, slowly walking through the corridor. He glanced at each cell as he walked through, only seeing what to him were scum....apart from a few. He saw a young child tucked away in a corner of his cell mumbling to himself, and another an old woman with toenails long enough to reach down to the concrete floor. Altara grimaced as he reached the torture room of the ward. His black hair hung above his eyes as he waited in front of the door, tensing up as he expected what happened to Hugo to happen to him....yet nothing happened. He soon walked up to the door and opened it slowly.
...
Altara walked into the room, which had a white mattress on the floor. A single lightbulb that hung from the ceiling switched on just above the mattress, making Altara's eyes only focus on just that. Altara's eyes narrowed as he spotted an unconscious Konstantine lying half-naked on the mattress with tubes attached to her wrists which led to a machine that collected her blood. There was another tube in her other wrist that was feeding her essential bodily fluids to keep her alive. There was also a heartbeat monitor which was slowly bleeping, it was the only sound Altara heard whilst he observed the situation.
"...K-Kon.."
Altara woke up from his stare as he unplugged the tubes from her wrists, the bleeding from doing so was only minimal. Altara got on his knees as he lied the unconscious Konstantine over his knee, brushing her short hair out of her face.
He tensed up as he looked at her.
"Not again. You won't be a slave to something you cannot even begin to go against. Those days are over for you.."
He looked at the machine.
"Even if your blood is different..even if you are different...
I will always be here. I won't let this Empire hurt you...or anyone."
Altara lifted her up in a bridal carry as he started to walk out the room. Looking at her as he did so.
"Because no one who appreciates their loved ones deserves to be alone."
Altara stared ahead as he carried Konstantine, seeing three guards run out with assault rifles.
Altara frowned, speaking to the guards directly.
"You do realize the plan you are following leads to nothing but your death, yes? They expect us to capture Konstantine safely, lure us out of the prison, and destroy us from there. They expect you to die. Yet you still accept that and blindly move on?"
The guards simply aimed their rifles.
Altara sighed and set Konstantine down behind him.
"I thought so."
Altara then turned partially towards the guards, all which were in the same armor as the ones Hugo fought in the Thirty-Eighth Ward.
"People who kill for the sake of more genocide deserve to die."

Red steam quickly started to burst out of Altara's body as he extended his arm above his head, red crystals appearing above his hand as they quickly dashed upwards, fusing together into a blade. They then appeared in Altara's hand, fusing into a handle that snapped in place below the blade. The blade itself was around 75 inches long, the surface is made out of red crystal which was actually solidified magik.
Altara coughed blood slightly due to the strain, thinking back to the times he had summoned flimsy versions of the sword whilst they were in the abandoned house in the city during the preparation phase of the operation. Hugo had no idea as Altara didn't want to distract him from helping with the preparation. But due to the situation he was currently in the magik had grown in strength and obeyed Altara much more willingly. To put it shortly, the emotions Altara was feeling had fed the magik and matured Altara's summoning to the point where the sword was no longer flimsy. But that didn't change the fact that it had put strain on his body. He had to put all of his energy into the summoning, unlike Hugo, Altara cannot have the summoned weapon activated and summon something else like a shield or armor. In order for Altara to do that..he would need much more practice.
Altara slammed the crystal blade down into the floor as he looked up at the guards.
"The finished version is lighter than I had expected...and red unlike Hugo's blue."
The Wolven guards stepped back a few steps as they spoke to themselves.
"Is that magik??"
"What does it look like?! He's one of the Oligarchy Members! OPEN FIRE!!"
The guards started to fire at Altara who was already running at them, Altara thrust the blade into one of the guard's chest instantly piercing the armor before swinging the blade towards the right, knocking the other guards over. Altara took the blade out of the chest and quickly ran to one of the knocked down guards to thrust the blade into the guard's heart, killing them instantly. The final guard started to crawl away from Altara but soon turned around on their back, firing a few bullets towards him. Altara saw the guard raise their rifle and quickly raised the pierced body up with his blade to use as a shield. Altara grunted and threw the body onto the guard as soon as they ran out of bullets, before quickly running up to them and piercing their neck. They choked for a few seconds..before bleeding out and dying. Altara took the blade out of the man's throat, his body still emitting red steam. He looked at the three dead guards for a second before walking back to Konstantine, he started to pick her up but coughed more blood.
"Argh, shit." He threw the sword to the side causing it to desummoning midair. He then picked up Konstantine just fine and started to walk out, walking over the three dead guards. He turned his earpiece back on.
"Konstantine is secured. Meet me at the harbor on the bottom floor."
"A-ALT!? IS EVERYTHING OKAY?"
Hugo shouted through the earpiece.
"Yeah..."
Altara started to walk down the spiral stairs at the end of the corridor through the door.
"Hugo?"
"Y-Yeah?? You hurt?"
"I did it."
"H-Huh?"
"My first summon. It's as big as yours..just a different color."
Hugo's face of worry turned into one of proudness
"Good job, Alt."
Altara stopped his descent of the stairs as he saw an exhausted Kry a few steps down. He looked up at Altara, then at Konstantine.
"Let's get out of here, Altara."
...
One hour before the operation began.
The heavily injured Kodan, the officer Hugo had tortured for information on Konstantine, was on his hands and knees in a dark and desolate hall. Before him was a throne, where Nero was sitting. The old man stared down at Kodan with his red eyes which stood out thanks to his wolven mark in the middle of his face.
"They...They used some sort of technology to get the information out of me! I swear on it my lord!"
...
Nero simply watched the man beg for mercy, before speaking.
"Yet in the end, you got captured."
Kodan looked up at Nero.
"But-"
"But?"
"I-"
Nero waved his hand to his side as Kodan's body quickly went limp, then his head fell off his shoulders before his body fell to the floor.
Trench stood to the side of Nero, who's eye was light blue. It was striking thanks to the darkness of the room. Trench then turned around, his body taking one step towards Kodan's remains before he and the remains vanished.
"Mercury...you were perfect for it, General Trench."

Glitched! Uplift Arc
[Winner of the April 22 Royal Road Writathon Challenge] In 2202 the System reached Earth. Thankfully it had learnt from previous uplifts and implemented an introductory arc to acclimatise the new participants rather than chucking them in the deep end. The previous practice of just dumping unsuspecting beings into a System designed for the growth of the multiverse had led to catastrophic and sub-optimal results. The return on investment was abysmal. That old trope was so over-cooked - after nearly extinguishing itself through negative returns new policy was required. That was 356 trillion local years back. Now over 5600 successful uplifts had joined the ranks of the multiverse. But the System was always learning, always growing. Still there were glitches. Mostly minor. Mere irritants really. Sometimes even they were catalysts, triggering a fresh expansion. Soon the System would understand why. Our Earth was 7912th. - Ascend - Battle - Challenge - Dominate - Expand - Gro... - Glor... - Where’s the eff word? - Glitch... File corrupted. ---END SYN---
