《ADEPTAVERSE》23 - Empire of Darkness Arc: One Final Task Towards Normality

Krow was running through the hallways of the prison, the alarm still blaring throughout. He had an earpiece in which soon received a message.
"They're breaking out now! There are four of them!! 36th hallway exit!"
"36th? Ain't that the rooftop?" He mumbled to himself. He found the two dead bodies belonging to the guards which were escorting the three back to their cells, examining their bodies and seeing one of their legs blown off. He took note of it and kept moving swiftly.
He soon turned the corner on the 36th corridor and spotted four figures running out onto the roof. He started to sprint after them, jumping over the dead guards and out of the makeshift exit. He spotted Kry first, summoning his dark blue dagger and throwing it at him. Kry heard Krow land after his jump and ducked under his dagger which desummoned after passing him.
"Altara! Shoot him!" Hugo ordered Altara as the group kept running, following someone in front.
Altara hesitated at first but aimed the shotgun at Krow who's eyes flashed dark blue, causing him to go invisible. Upon seeing him go invisible Altara exhaled and kept running. "He's vanished!"
Krow reappeared right behind the group and tackled Kry, who was slightly behind the group. Kry hit the concrete ground with a grunt, Krow summoned his dagger and prepared to stab him but before he could a crackle of a sniper rang out, sending a bullet through Krow's chest. Krow coughed blood under his mask and flopped to the side of Kry who was quickly pulled up by Hugo.
The group continued running and Krow remained on the ground, bleeding out slowly.
...
After some time a voice then rang through his earpiece, waking him up.
"Krow? Krow?? We heard a sniper shot outside of the prison. Are you okay?"

It was the voice of Lurk.
Krow coughed, before speaking weakly. "Yeah...I'm fine..."
He took out a healing potion from his pocket, pouring it onto his chest slowly and with struggle. The wound healed and the bleeding stopped, the wound itself giving the illusion of time around it rewinding until the wound no longer existed. He threw the bottle away causing it to smash on the concrete.
Krow stood up and looked in the direction the group ran in, the group, of course, was now gone. Seeing this he sighed, looking in the general direction he was shot in; from his back. He scanned around with his masked eyes seeing only some buildings the same height or close to the height of the prison. He spoke into his earpiece to Lurk.
"I lost them. They had assistance from outside the prison." He said with slight frustration, the wind blowing his hooded coat to the side. He went to the edge of the prison and looked out into the city. "Any recommended course of action?"
"Hmm. You stay here at the prison. I shall send Kodan after them."
Krow sighed and instead of responding he simply sat on the edge of the roof, staring up at the gray, dead sky of Wrathak.
...
Approx thirty years ago...
Unknown planet outside of Adeptan System.
Krow was kneeling down, chains strapped to both of his wrists and ankles. The chains themselves coming from behind him, allowing him to lean forward against the chain's weight. He was stripped of all clothes except a pair of brown pants and a hooded black long coat which hid his face. A booming voice came out from the darkness which surrounded him.
"Your exile shall result in your remaining sanity to be crushed into nothing but atoms."

Krow then spoke out in his calm yet sharp tone
"I think I am fine. My mind is locked on target." He kept his eyes locked on the chains which bound him.
"And so is ours."
A female scream rang out amongst the darkness following the booming response.
"S-Sis?"
"LET GO OF ME!!!"
The female shrieked out, Krow tugged violently on his chains, grimacing under his hood.
"She never got out?" He asked himself, before yelling, "LET GO OF HER!! THIS IS BETWEEN US!"
The ground then shook causing the voices in the dark to mumble. A piece of the rocky ceiling fell down next to Krow.
"They're here?? They've found us?!"
...
"Let us get this over with, then. Get the ships ready for evacuation."
Krow heard the voices, but before he could talk..
BANG!
A gunshot rang out, and a girl in a black robe was dropped on the ground in front of Krow, a pool of blood growing underneath.
Krow's eyes flickered dark blue as he started to breathe heavily, the ground shook once more as the cave started to collapse around them. The walls in which the chains were attached to collapsed behind Krow as he crawled towards the girl. He held her up with both hands, her head hanging back.
"Sis..." Krow mumbled with a dead voice, a teardrop landing on her pale cheek.
The cave collapsed in on them.
...
.....
A hand sprung out from under a pile of rocks, causing the pile to collapse. Krow coughed and crawled out the rocks with his sister still in hand. He dragged her out. The cave which they resided in was now collapsed, the ceiling was open showing nothing but a black ashy sky.
Krow looked down at his sister, taking his hood down. The young Krow had long black hair which stretched down to just below his shoulders, his eyes were pitch black and had bags underneath them. His body was cut up, his right arm's forearm even having a piece of bone showing.
He looked down at his dead sister, taking her hood down. Her features were much like his own, except her hair was slightly longer. His sister wasn't injured at all from the collapse. He brushed her cheek and looked up at the open ceiling, his eyes suddenly sprang to life with the color of dark blue.
"I will do it for both of us, sis. I will attain a normal life. A life outside of a cult. Once I obtain this..."
He looked down at his sister.
"Then I can die peacefully."
He looked beside his sister, a mask which resembled a crow was there. He took it and put it on his face, standing up with his sister in one arm, slumped onto his body.
"Like a crow, I will do anything I can to survive."

The Last Marshal
Weird West Fantasy Noir Once the Republic Marshals brought order to the chaotic lands along the Frontier, facing dangers both human and supernatural with ancient wisdom and a six-gun —but that was a long time ago. Destroyed by conspiracy and betrayal, all that remains of that secretive order is one nameless man on a trek though the West seeking revenge on the woman he blames for the Marshals' fall and his disgrace. When a visitor from our world joins him on his journey, they together must confront the horrors of a strange land, the mysteries of the past and the real meaning of their quest for justice. The world of Tellus is what 19th Century Earth would have looked like if the stories of Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgeson were real. History in this world moves slower. The old faiths persist and civilization never conquered the dark corners of the map, at least not without being inextricably changed. Technology and culture takes a little longer to evolve in this land, as people here tend to spend more time pursuing their elaborate revenge plots or trying to avoid being the next sacrifice to the Outer Gods rather than advancing science or statecraft. Imagine Cormac McCarthy by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs, though a little less testosterone-drenched than that description would imply. Three caveats: First, there are deep mysteries here, including how such a world came to be and who controls it. Second, this world is not wholly unconnected from our own. There is a historical point of divergence, but in the distant past. To paraphrase Twain: history in this world is not a repeat of our own, but it does often rhyme. And finally, this is not a setting that lends itself to happy endings.

The Eternal Vigil
The year is 2220, a time when governments and nation-states are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Instead, all prominent parts of human society are now organizing around the commands of three great Artificial Intelligences, owned and operated by the world's largest corporation. World peace has been achieved, and the very word 'politics' has disappeared from people's lips. Religion has largely disappeared, replaced in some parts by worshipping of the great AIs, but mostly substituted by a devotion to material goods and faith in the market. There is now a general consensus that the best form of government has been found. No, it is not democracy, nor is it autocracy or oligarchy. Instead, it is technocracy - rule by the learned, the intelligent, and the skilled. And who are more learned, intelligent, and skilled than the great AIs? Exactly, no one. The AIs will correct some market failures once in a while, but shall otherwise let the market be free. After all, the freer the market, the freer the people. Some may question how society advanced to this stage, but that is all they will do - question. Because they will not find answers, for history is no longer taught anywhere. After all, it is not a practical subject. One cannot get a decently paying job with a history degree. Society doesn't have any time for people to idly ponder about the past. No, this is a practical society of practical people: engineers, doctors, lawyers, developers, managers, bankers, soldiers, and the such. My name is Aiden Scivit and I used to be one such practical man: minding my own business, doing my job, with the faith that hard work will always be rewarded by the market...and that politics and philosophy were things thought of by idly people who leech off society. But this all changed, and here is my story, my history. Just because the stories of ages long past have been erased, does not mean that a brand new beginning cannot be created. The story is already finished but I still need to do some editing so a chapter should be released each day for a month. It is a bit political, as you can probably tell by the introduction, so there is that (it will low-key read like a philosophy dump 10% of the time, so really it's like Atlas Shrugged but liberal and worse lol). Also, I actually wrote this in grade 10 as part of my MYP Personal Project, and recently touched up on it for online publication. Finally, if you find the writing style passable and are interested in my other works, check out the one in the link below. It is a fantasy set in the Ancient Greek world, and is completed and uploaded in full: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/35099/the-oresteia-modernized
