《ADEPTAVERSE》16 - Empire of Darkness Arc: We Go West

Hugo and Altara were on a yacht that was drifting across the sea at high speeds. Altara was sat on the side of the boat looking at the clear blue water swiftly pass them. He soon looked over his shoulder at Hugo who took his parka off, putting it on the side of the boat before stretching.
"Hugo, help me with this." A soft voice rang out from inside the yacht, it was Kry. He was wearing a white top and some jeans. Hugo looked down at him, seeing him on one side of a large crate, he quickly went to the other side of it, lifting it with Kry onto the main deck of the yacht. Kry adjusted his glasses on his nose and exhaled, standing straight.
"What's in there?" Altara asked, standing up and walking over to the crate. Kry quickly flicked it open. Inside were some earpieces as well as some silenced pistols.
"Magik will only make noise. If we want to put a stop to what is going on we will have to do it quietly if possible." Kry took out the note Altara and Konstantine found from his back pocket, reading it over again.
We need you to get rid of all experienced magik users in the Oligarchy of Magik. They will only cause problems for us in the invasion. Once you've collected all of their heads, come to Wrathak and you shall become the richest noblemen on Adepta whilst helping us create a new world under the ruling of one, powerful ideology. We are using you because we have worked with you before and we cannot risk our identity being revealed.
"Hm." Kry tapped his chin with his index finger.
"I'll say it again, we should've contacted the military and had them deal with this." Hugo said with a sigh, folding his arms.

"And the risk to start a war? Listen, if we contacted the Homstalan Military they would've most likely A) not believed us or B) Launched an assault onto Wrathak. The note strongly hints that Wrathak was using Eternal Chrome to target the teachers at the Oligarchy of Magik as they know that we'll be a problem if they carried out their invasion. They are sneaky, I tell you. If they succeeded in taking us out...well..." Kry gave Hugo an earpiece from the crate. "Let's just be glad that Konstantine and Altara found this note."
Altara cleared his throat and spoke. "Speaking of Konstantine, where is she?"
"Sleeping below deck. She hadn't slept since you got back from the forests yesterday evening." Hugo looked at Altara. "Missin' her?"
"No, just wondering." Altara looked at Kry who handed him an earpiece as well. "What is this for?"
"Once we reach Wrathak we will camp out until the next morning, soon enough we might have to split up. We can communicate through these." Kry attached one to his own ear. "I will give Konstantine hers when she wakes up."
Hugo attached his as well. "Funny how you haven't asked Kry the most obvious question, Alt."
"Obvious question?" Altara cocked his eyebrow and looked at Hugo.
"Yeah, the yacht. You know how expensive these are?" Hugo grinned.
"Wait, Kry you own this boat??" Altara looked at Kry, his eyes widening slightly.
Kry chuckled and nodded. "That I do. I'm a rich man, set for life actually. I keep doing what I'm doing not for money, but because I'm dedicated." He looked at Altara, taking the pistols out the crate. "Maybe you'll turn out like me one day Altara, best astrologist on Adepta!" He gave Hugo a pistol and three magazines. "Don't worry, it's not loaded."

"Heh, here's hoping." Altara nervously chuckled after speaking. Hugo put the pistol in a holster attached to his waist. "My coat should hide it when I put it on."
Kry then took out a map, closing the crate and putting the map on top of it, drawing a line with his finger. "We should be around here by now."

"Now is a good time to get some rest, I will wake you all up if you're still asleep when we arrive." Kry put the map away.
"What about you? Aren't you sleeping?" Altara asked Kry, looking over at him and folding his arms. Hugo went below deck.
"I don't need to sleep. I have an implant in my brain that constantly gives me the necessary amount of energy. It's useful for someone like me who is constantly watching the stars." He lifted a patch of his white hair up at the back of his head, pointing to a small metallic slit in his skin. Altara raised his brow when he saw this. "W-Woah...so you never get tired?"
"Only when it comes to things like running, I just don't need to sleep." Kry adjusted his glasses. "Anyways...go sleep Altara, there should be a bed below deck."
Altara quickly nodded. "Yes sir- I-I mean Kry." He quickly went below deck. Kry soon turned around and looked at the direction the yacht was going, he frowned slightly before talking calmly to himself.
"Wrathak. The homeland of the Wolven."

The Last Science [SE]
[SE has the same content as the original story, split into smaller chunks for easier reading. This story is on a temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in healthcare and unfortunately no longer have the freetime to continue posting on a regular basis. As soon as our workload decreases, I will return. Thanks for reading! 💙] No one ever knows the whole story. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the fading town of Rallsburg stumbles upon an amazing discovery—magic itself. Faced with potentially world-shattering power, the people of Rallsburg keep the secret for themselves. Led by Rachel DuValle, a perpetually underestimated college student with grand ambitions, they seek to found a new society. The world beyond suspects nothing, but magic cannot stay hidden forever. A train arrives in Rallsburg carrying Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate. To him, magic could represent meaning for his life, an explanation for his empty existence. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. This is the "Scraps Edition" of the story, where the chapters have been split up into bite-size chunks (roughly 1500-3000 words), for your convenience. The prose has been edited from its original form, with some improvements, but there are no content differences from the original. New chapters will be posted throughout each week starting on Friday and appearing on multiple days thereafter, depending on the length of the chapter. Content Warning (by request): This series delves into some topics and situations which may be upsetting for some readers. In American rating parlance, the narrative would be rated PG-13 (except for language), but some have noted the story can get pretty dark on occasion. Please use your best judgment, and don't be afraid to take breaks and come back later. I'll still be here! [Discord] - come hang out and chat! Beyond the Bridge
There are many worlds, many multiverses, and you can move between them via the Federation's Bridge network - magical gateways to other worlds. The world dubbed "C'thon" by its inhabitants - or Gamma-Theta-Nu-649, if you ask the Federation's bureaucracy - was deserted when the Federation found it. The "civilized" races had all died out centuries prior, and the wilderness had grown downright feral in their absence. Now, the lonely Federation outpost of Bridgetown is under constant threat from the hungry wildlife, malicious fey, territorial goblins, and wandering undead that surround it. The town's distance from the Federation's centers of power means that it gets precious few of the resources that it needs to stay safe and afloat. Enter the Guild of Adventurers, a plucky and disparate crew who do the Federation's dirty work in exchange for coin. One team, the first of many, crosses the Bridge to C'thon looking for fame, fortune, and (if they're lucky) the answer to a newly-discovered Prophecy. They'll get much more than they bargained for, although first they need to avoid being eaten by the local wildlife. Updates weekly on Wednesday. Chapters will be as long as they need to be for them to work, which means they can vary. If anything drops below 2500 words, I'll post an extra chapter if I have one ready. [PS: This is not a litRPG, but I do borrow heavily from TTRPGs for inspiration, and the general setting and storyline is from a TTRPG campaign I'm running.] [PPS: This is my first attempt at writing long-form fiction. I'm not trying to make a great piece of literature or have a multi-novel overarching plot, but hopefully it'll still be a fun story - let me know what you think in the comments.] [PPPS: Cover image is from a free-download wallpaper by Tyler Edlin; I do not own it, and will take it down immediately if requested.]
