《Another World? Never Saw This Coming》Chapter 13 What's with these flowers?

Roughly 2 hours later; the caravan finally started moving at a decent pace, down a dirt road surrounded by trees, and fields covered with weird flowers.
Currently John’s group was beginning to chat and share stories.
Elden: “And then just when everyone thought they were going to die I rushed in and shoved a sword down its throat!”
John: “You waited until the last second, like some kind of hero.”
Elden: “Heck yeah, and after saving everyone these royal guards approached me, and asked me to escort them and of course, I accepted!”
John: “Mmh alright what about you, Drven?”
Drven: “I shot down a group of demons attacking my house and was approached by the royal guards, and here I am.”
Elden: “Now that you’ve heard our stories, what’s yours?”
John glanced at Riley and gave her a glance that seemed to say ‘how much can we tell them?’
Riley looked at John and seemed to say ‘don’t worry I got this’
Riley: “We were attacked by a Deryun on the way to the nearest town. We both were badly injured but we still managed to kill it, John was in bad shape so I quickly went the nearest town and dropped him off with a healer only to realize that I needed the Deryun’s claws to heal John so I left to collect them.”
Riley then began speaking about what happened from her point of view while nodding her head in John’s direction.
John: “To quickly summarize what happened next after Riley left: I was moved into a prison cell and the guards were intent on selling off me and Riley as slaves so In order to avoid that I blew up the entire prison.”
Getting the hint John began quickly summarizing what happened from his perspective while leaving out things like what magic he used and why they wanted him as a slave.
Riley: “I then easily killed off the multitude of guards that got in my way while searching for him and after he made his position incredibly obvious we met up.”
Said Riley, whilst proudly puffing out her chest, John gave her a sidelong glance and shook his head.
John: “After camping it out we were planning on leaving town but we ended up running into the Royal guards who hired us to guard the Princess.”
As John finished up the story he noticed Elden’s jaw had dropped and Drven’s eyes were sparkling.
Elden: “You blew up an entire prison?!?! What kind of magic is that! I want some…”
Drven: “Yeah I had my doubts at first but you two are definitely on par with us those royal guards know what they are doing the Deryun encounter also explains why you have those bandages around you.”
Elden: “So why do you guy’s wear cloaks? Battered one’s at that.”
Riley: “I wear a cloak to keep the sun out of my eyes.”
Riley quickly said while glancing at John.
John: “I wear this cloak because it looks cool I plan on getting a better one when we reach the next town.”
After hearing John declare this Riley shook her head in shame while muttering ‘of all the answers you could have given, why was it that’
Elden: “HAH, FINALLY someone gets it! Being a hero is about looking cool while possessing enormous power, and fighting for justice with that power!”
Elden immediately bought their stories and began giving his own philosophy on hero’s while Drven just nodded his head in agreement.

Riley on the other hand, had her head in her hands and muttered: “I’m surrounded by idiots” while giving in to her fate.
After giving all of their back-stories, John’s group continued chatting about random things. However once the carriage entered a thick part of the forest Elden’s ears perked up and he immediately unsheathed his sword.
Drven getting the hint readied his bow followed quickly by John who grabbed one of the flowers he had picked up earlier in his hand and Riley giving John a curious look readied her trusty
throwing knifes.
The Rest of the groups after seeing John’s group prepare for battle quickly quieted down and began to draw their own weapons.
John: “What is it?”
Asked John quietly while leaning next to Elden
Elden: “A group of bandits and a mage”
The moment Elden said that spiked logs were dropped in front of the caravan which caused it to stop.
In the next instant a large male with bear like features wielding a longsword stood on top of the logs and glared at the caravan in front of him.
Bear man: “My name is Bear Grs I’m the leader of these fine fellows who now have you surrounded I also happen to have a mage who is currently ready to light all of you on fire!”
The aptly named Bear Grs leader of these bandits began to give his demands when suddenly a hail of arrows began to pour down on the caravan from both sides.
Elden: “Che* a distraction alright Drven I leave the archers to you I’m going to attempt to stop those arrows.”
At the same time John began limping towards Bear with the flower in his left hand.
Bear Grs: “Is that some kind of peace offering? Sorry buddy a flower won’t cut it.”
John then Smiled malevolently and began to glow orange.
In the next instant the flower in his hand extended and thickened to the width of a tree branch as it quickly wrapped itself around Bear not even giving him a chance to act surprised.
Bear was completely disabled by a mere flower, unable to move as the flowers stem had become incredibly tough, and unable to talk as the flower itself was in his mouth.
John: “wow this gives Flower Power a whole new meaning”
Said John to himself, he then turned around to see how the rest of the battle was progressing.
Riley was taking out bandits left and right with her throwing knifes while Elden cut down arrows out of the sky, Drven was taking out archers with his bow, and the rest of the groups were engaged in combat with the bandits.
It seemed as though the Caravan was winning steadily so John relaxed a bit but in the next instant he felt a large amount of heat behind him and as he turned around a fireball was heading straight for him.
Riley looked back to see how John was doing and noticed just a little too late the mage that had appeared behind John she watched as the fireball exploded right where John was standing, she began glowing blue as she shot over to where the mage was.
After hearing an explosion Elden looked back and noticed Riley glowing blue rushing towards the explosion Elden realized that the explosion must have been caused by the mage he had sensed and that John must have been caught in the explosion he then began to run towards the explosion.
Drven after seeing Elden rushing towards the mage turned around and pointed his bow at the mage readying up an arrow.

Mage: “Heh, so you’re a mage too huh?”
The Mage muttered while looking at John standing unscathed in front of him. Right when the mage unleashed the fireball, John had created a wall of dirt that dispersed the fire around him and was now glaring at the mage.
John: “Not quite, but I’m pretty damn close”
John then grabbed the pocket knife he had brought from his world and pointed it at the mage.
Mage: “How you expect that small thing to hurt me.”
Said the mage as he readied up another fireball, John simply grinned and started glowing orange.
John: “Watch carefully.”
The knife John was holding Extended into a full sword and the mage, suddenly becoming scared, unleashed another fireball towards John.
John put up another dirt barrier and continued to approach the Mage, who was now trembling in fear.
John then got within arms-reach of the mage and slashed the sword down words completely cutting through the gray robe the mage was wearing.
As the robe dropped to the ground the mage was revealed to be a thin boy in common clothes with gray hair and cat ears, his green eyes were tearing up as he looked in terror at John.
Mage: “Wh-what are you…”
John: “I’m not here to kill you, I’m just escorting some people if you continue to attack me I will be forced to kill you but I would rather not kill someone like you.”
The boy then began sobbing and collapsed on the ground, John thinking that this was just too pitiful approached him and crouched down next to him.
John: “Don’t worry you’re fine now I don’t intend to hurt you.”
Said John while trying his hardest to comfort the boy, being unable to think of anything else John began petting the boy’s head.
Slowly the boy stopped crying and narrowed his eyes while John petted him.
Riley, Elden, And Drven, were just standing there watching the whole scene unfold.
Elden stepped forward with his sword drawn completely ignoring the atmosphere.
Elden: “You, Mage, how dare you attack us for this you will pay with your life!”
John then stood up and while holding the cat eared boy with one arm glared at Elden.
John: “Dude, It’s not cool to attack children you’ll just make him cry again save those words for that Bear guy this kid is harmless, he was probably forced to join the bandits, by the way what’s your name kid?”
Sven: “It’s Sven”
John: “See Elden how could you hurt a kid like this.”
As John said that he held Sven in front of him Sven then looked up at Elden with his eyes glimmering, a critical hit. Elden collapsed on his hands and knees.
Elden: “TH-those kitten eyes that was a low blow damnit.”
Meanwhile Riley and Drven were the only ones taking this situation seriously, both walked up to Bear, Riley Yanked the flower out of his mouth and held one of her knives up to his throat while Drven Aimed his bow towards Bear’s head.
Riley: “Kora, Care to explain why you attacked us?”
Said Riley menacingly, while making direct eye contact with Bear, who was starting to get nervous noticing just how dangerous Riley was, began to speak.
Bear Grs: “We-we heard there was a convoy coming through this area so thinking it would be an easy grab we decided to take it on, but clearly we were mistaken.”
John noticing Riley interrogating Bear grabbed Sven and began walking over.
John: “Hey Bear can you ask your troops to back off I don’t want any unnecessary deaths also how did this kid end up with you?”
Bear Grs: “That kid was taken from his village after we killed off his parents. I thought he would be useful because of his mage abilities but even now he fails, hah you couldn’t protect your parents and now you can’t even stop a caravan what a useless brat.”
John having just been seriously ticked off by Bear approached him and loomed menacingly over him.
John: “This kid made me use up a bunch of my magic to defend against his attacks. whereas you got taken out by a flower, I think you forfeit the right to call anyone “useless””
Bear Grs: “You may have got me but my men will fight to the death!”
John: “Riley hold on to Sven for me would’ja?”
Riley: “I dislike FelineKin just so you know.”
John: “I figured as much but he’s harmless take care of him.”
John, after handing off Sven to Riley, walked back to the front of the caravan, which was still being bombarded with arrows. He began glowing bright orange summoning up as much magic power as possible.
Then placing both of his hands on the ground, orange cracks spread out from where his hands were going around the caravan into the forest.
John: “Gotcha”
The forest around the caravan then seemed to fold back as trees flattened out and began constricting the bandits that were hiding in and around them.
After making sure every bandit was restrained John looked back to Riley and Sven and collapsed backwards, unconscious.
Riley: “He did it again, what an idiot MP exhaustion is going to be an issue with him isn’t it…”
Riley muttered to herself as she walked over to John, The others however had a much bigger reaction to what had just occurred.
Sven: “whoa, what, How could He do that much! That was too awesome!”
Elden: “… Tch Show Off”
Drven: “What kind of creature is he…”
All three of them had different impressions but they were all extremely impressed by what had just occurred, not to mention the fact that all of the guards and other groups around the caravan were staring in awe at what just happened.
Princess: “Um, Etten what just happened?”
Etten: “That was probably John your highness.”
Princess: “Be sure to invite him to dinner tonight I want to have a talk with him.”
Etten: “As do I, I will make sure arrangements are made.”
Eventually the Guards came to their senses and began subduing all of the bandits and clearing the road in order to continue traveling.
Riley with Sven’s help carried John back to the wagon and dropped him on some pelts as they did this his hood slipped off slightly revealing his face and Sven let out a gasp, Riley quickly pulled Johns hood back over his head and glared at Sven.
Riley: “One word and you die, got it?”
Sven began nodding his head rapidly and looked at John with a glimmer in his eye.
Sven: “he just gets cooler by the second!”
Riley: “What a weird kid.”

Mistbound: Eternity
The world is said to be formed out of duality of man. Good and evil, right and wrong, light and dark. And with duality, comes conflict. A meaningless clash of ideals results in pointless wars. Azlan is wanderer who doesn't falls in either category. Tired and done with the redundant world, he lives his secluded life, hunting monstrosites for coin in the crumbling province of Mountaliya, situated in the land of Forsa. The premise follows Azlan as he explores the province, experiencing the culture and its people as they try to stand unshaken amidst a cold and unforgiving world. The story is a dark fantasy that is a balance of action and world building but most importantly, it follows the people going about their daily lives. The world has entered a state of stasis, there are no high stakes, no glory to be had, only a decaying realm of ice remains. Everyone awaits for Heaven's descent, an event prophesied to bring the world out of stasis, by granting the champion of the event a wish. Heaven Shall Descend. I wanted to write a high fantasy story that doesn't focuses too much on Magic and Swordfights, but rather interactions between people, a bit of politics and ideals. This is my first attempt at writing something this huge, please let me know if you see mistakes or any problems in general, so I can learn from them. (The cover picture is from the year 1818, "Wanderer Above the Mist" by Caspar David Friedrich). I also write Short stories set in the same shared universe. You can read them here: Dark Fantasy Short Stories.

The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.
