Ch#09 A friends Difficulties
Sahir went up to a machine that looked like a super computer, he pointed at a flat surface in front of him where an orb of light was levitating in the air.
Jack seeing the light orb felt cold sweats drench his back.
“Hey pixie the system won’t find out about the thing inside of me, right?” inquired jack his voice quavering.
“Puhehehehe” giggled pixie as she clutched her stomach while muttering it hurts it hurts looking extremely adorable.
“Oh master look at you getting all edgy and nervous” said pixie with a smirk… then she looked at jack who seemed to look extremely annoyed
“Ahm… well you don’t have to worry about this little thing master” then she puffed her chest out and continued” as long as pixie the best AI of the universe is with you”
Pff, yeah best A.I… this little demon acting all haughty again but sh*t if I don’t praise her a bit she might do something fishy thought jack “yea, yea princess fairy please cover for me” said jack with a flattering smile.
“hehehe of course, I’ll be delighted to help master” transmitted pixie with a bright content smile.
Master my ass... muttered jack
…
“Ok kid come up and put your hands in the globe” said Sahir from his seat.
Jack went up to the machine and placed his hands in the orb, the first thing he felt was a tingling sensation in his hand which was followed by a piercing pain in his bone as if a piece of it was taken out.
Sahir pressed some buttons then with a BEEP the blob of light vanished and a row of data appeared in front of him.
“Alright you can take back your arm now kid” said Sahir, when a red notification appeared on the screen, Sahir looked a bit stunned as he looked at the notification, but after a brief moment his expression reverted back to normal.

“Not bad kid, you got some sturdy bones” said Sahir then he pushed some buttons and a chip came out from the machine it was about the size of a grain. He took it and putted it in a syringe like device
Jack felt a bit spooked as he looked at the weird gadget in Sahirs hand… sh*t what the hell is that thing
Sahir noticed that jack looked a bit nervous “kid you don’t have to be so spooked, this chip gun won’t hurt, also it is your identification chip, without it the royal troops will shoot you on sight” said Sahir as he stood up and went towards jack “now show me your hand kid so we can get it over with”
Jack pushed his hand forward albeit a bit unwilling it won’t hurt it won’t hurt muttered jack inwardly
Sahir touched the tip of the gun on jack wrist and pushed the button, pssh jack felt a piercing pain in his hand as if someone was piercing him with a needles
After a few seconds “alright, done” said Sahir then he sat back on his seat” ok kid you can go now, and another thing you should stay out of trouble, also I’ll be seeing you tomorrow morning in the training ground is it clear”
“Yes elder” replied jack
“Alright good you are dismissed now” said Sahir as he motioned towards jack and Musad to go out.
Musad seeing that the work has been done grabbed jack “alright let’s go” he said
“Umm yeah ok” said jack as he bowed towards Sahir then turned around and went outside.
“So where are we going next” asked jack.
“umm it should be to take you to the living quarters ” said Musad as he looked at jacks clothes” also to get you a new set of clothes, you know you stink”

Jack sniffed his armpits and frowned” yeah you are right I do need a new set of clothes” replied jack
On their way jack noticed that there was a row of numbers and words on his wrist it read 10002017:303:JH
“Hey Musad what does these numbers mean” asked jack pointing at the row of numbers
“Oh this” Musad looked at jacks wrist “on the extreme left is the year of your registration on the royal data network. The middle one represents your number in the village, right now there are 303 people in the village including you. As for the last two words they are your initials” said Musad as he showed his wrist his middle entry was 164.
As jack touched the numbers a holographic screen popped out from his arm it displayed “Jack Hong, bone age 11 years, war orphan, current location vulture village”
Mosad also glanced at the holographic screen “that’s your data screen, oh and also you can communicate with other people through the chip, here” Musad touched his wrist to jacks and a notification popped in jacks screen.
“Serial number 164 identified, Musad Sukla ” it displayed.
Hmm so it does that too huh thought jack.
“oh alright” jack nodded in appreciation” hey I wanted to ask what do we do in the training grounds, you know before the evolution what can you do” inquired jack.
Musad became a bit annoyed hearing jacks question “well Mr. pretty boy with a sturdy build, what we do in the training ground is to strengthen our physiques as much as possible so that our bodies my with stand the pressure of the process and not blow up” replied Musad as a look of frustration appeared on his face “but for a body like yours that is sturdy by birth does not need so much strengthening” said Musad with a sigh.
Strengthening of the physique huh thought jack but then he noticed that Musad looked a bit down after explaining to jack.
“Hey Musad why the long face man” asked jack.
Musad looked at jack as an envious look flashed passed his eyes “well as you can see I have a weak body by birth” he stopped moving “so as a result it is very difficult for me to evolve there is a very high chance of me failing. My only chance of success will be if I am a psychic” Musad looked more depressed as he continued “but how can it be so easy to evolve as a psychic when I don’t have anyone in my family linage who was a psychic before me” explained Musad.
Hmm well that’s depressing, to have an inborn weak body thought jack.
“but it doesn’t matter” said Musad as a determined look appeared on his face replacing all the depression from before “as long as I don’t give up no one can stop me, also no one can surely say that I won’t become an evolver” said Musad, his eyes once again lively and vibrant.
Well that was something else, but he has that look once again and from the looks of it he is an good straightforward boy worth befriending thought jack… and I will also achieve my goals no matter what I’ll definitely return back to earth, back to Sara muttered jack as he hardened his resolve.
“That’s the spirit man never give up “said jack as he patted Musad shoulders.
“Yeah thanks bro” replied Musad
“So bros then” said jack as he stretched out his hand
“Of course” said Musad as he grabbed jacks hand.

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.
