《A World Beyond》Chapter 19: The Three Seats

Hiro turned to his classmates and asked, “So are we going to continue or are we done here?”
Hiro’s classmates looked at each other hesitantly, and then the grey-haired child tossed the shield in his hands. He pulled out a golden pendulum connected to a very long golden chain. The tip of the golden pendulum had a blade, and the pendulum itself seemed to have magical runes engraved into it.
The blonde haired boy saw this and sighed and threw away his shield. He reached into his uniform with both his hands and pulled out several silver balls. He threw the balls into the air and they began to float there as they each expanded into spheres six feet in diameter.
The grey-haired child shouted, “Sarah!”
Sarah panicked, and the commanded her lion chimera to roar once more causing the red wave to echo outward. The blue haired child began pulled out two peculiar weapons, they were blunt and entirely cylindrical rods of steel and another smaller piece of metal seemed to protrude out of it. He raised the two of these steel prongs together and began chanting causing his body and weapons to begin emitting sparks.
Nick who was sent flying earlier, finally sat back up with a bloodied nose and looked at everyone else charging Hiro. His eyes widened and he immediately stood back up. He frantically looked around for his hammer and as soon as he spotted it to his side, he raised it to the air and swung it as he cast a spell.
Suddenly a large chunk of earth flew up in front of him, and he smacked it with his hammer shouting, “Earth Spike!”
As the hammer struck the earth the earth seemed to condense and harden before suddenly forming a large pyramidal cone that rapidly short towards Hiro.
Hiro smiled as he looked around him, he ignored the gray-haired child and the blonde haired child’s advances and dashed towards the Chimera behind him. He tossed the sword in his right hand to his left, and on his way, his hands dug into the side of the pyramidal cone Nick had shot towards him.
As he appeared in front of the Chimera, the Chimera stopped roaring and attempted to sink its teeth into Hiro. However, before the Chimera could even touch him Hiro swung his sword into the air leaving a large wound in the chimera’s chest and one of its faces.

The chimera screamed in pain, as suddenly it’s tail morphed into a snake and it grew a size larger. The snake tail lunged towards, but as it was about to bite into Hiro’s neck it suddenly found that it was dozens of feet away from Hiro. As the snake tail which had a mind of its own looked down at the ground it realized it was floating in the air.
Just moments before it struck, Hiro tossed the hardened piece of earth in his hand directly into the chimera’s chest with enough force to send it flying into the air. Having received far too much damage, the chimera began to turn into specks of light before disappearing.
Sarah's face grew pale, and she raised both her hands surrendering. Hiro patted her head when suddenly the blue haired child and Nick appeared behind her. Hiro smiled as he pushed Sarah away, and jumped backwards.
However when Hiro landed he was surprised to find his left leg entangled in golden chains, and more chains began to crawl up his leg. Hiro tried to lift his foot, but the pendulum was not only holding on the to the ground but reinforcing it to make it harder for Hiro to forcefully rip it out.
Hiro frowned as he tugged at the chains when he suddenly felt something behind him and turned around. He was surprised to find all those silver balls had morphed themselves into several weapons made out of silver. The blonde haired child heaved as he waved his hand causing the weapons to shoot towards Hiro.
At the same time the blue haired child had finished his spell, and suddenly his weapons flashed with lightning as he charged out at Hiro followed by Nick and his hammer. Nick dragged his hammer on the ground as he charged Hiro causing his hammer to be surrounded by reinforced dirt causing its weight to increase
Hiro quickly glanced around and then he swung his sword splitting several of the silver weapons before reinforcing his leg even further with mana. However, as his legs shone a faint white suddenly the golden chains around him grew stronger as they seemingly began to absorb his mana.
Hiro thought to himself, “Oh I see.”
The Hiro exhaled before raising his right fist, three black spheres appeared around his fist and began spinning rapidly. As everyone closed in Hiro slammed his fist into the ground along with those three black spheres and the ground underneath his feet was overturned with a large boom.

The blast was relatively big and it forced the blue haired child and Nick to momentarily back away. Then suddenly black spheres shot out of the ground from underneath them and struck their chests sending the two of them flying.
The grey-haired child’s mouth gaped before he turned to the ground underneath him. Then he realized the third sphere wasn’t for him. He shouted, “Eric dodge!”
The blonde haired child Eric jumped back and pulled out another silver ball and threw it in front of him. The silver ball expanded into a shield in front of him as Eric prepared for the strike.
However to his surprise, nothing happened, instead, Hiro smiled as the last black sphere floated out of the ground and into his hand. Similarly, the other black sphere flew into his hand and they began to rotate again.
Eric's face paled as all the remaining silver weapons suddenly collapsed into a liquid goo and he pulled out more silver balls to reinforce the shield in front of him. Hiro shook his head, the black sphere spinning in his hand began to shrink further and further until finally, the spinning of the sphere formed a black ring.
The grey-haired child raised both his hands and immediately surrendered as Hiro pointed the ring at him. Then he pointed the ring at Eric, and suddenly the shot forward at an incredible speed.
Eric slammed his hands on the silver shield in front of him and it expanded massively forming a multi-layered wall of steel. However no matter how many walls the ring encountered it just ripped straight through them. As Eric felt the last few walls tearing apart he grabbed an amulet hanging off his neck and tore it off its chains shouting, “I surrender!”
Suddenly a transparent golden bubble formed around Eric, and as the ring broke through the last wall, several instructors appeared in front of Eric stopping the black ring. As Owen looked down at the small spheres that were fading away, he asked, “What in the world is this?”
Hiro scratched the back of his head, “A little something I came up with.”
Owen turned to the rest of Hiro’s opponents and asked, “Are you guys still alive?”
Nick and the blue haired child grunted, and Owen cheered, “It’s good that you’re alive!”
The principal turned to the two headmasters behind him and said, “Well might as well just give him one of the seeded seats.”
Albert turned to Miss Campbell and asked, “Geez, what did you teach him.”
Miss Campbell stared at Hiro and said, “Hardly anything…”

The over the course of a few hours the freshman class managed to finish their competition for who gets the seeded seats. In the end, Baldar after witnessing Hiro fight five of his classmates challenged the three winners of the first round to fight him.
In the end, Baldar managed to remind everyone just how absurd the royal families constitution was as he beat every one of them up with almost no magic and basically just brute force.
Other than Baldar there was one other seeded seat. This seat went to the Magic Knight student referred to as Lilia. Other than Mors she was the only Magic Knight who wasn’t a noble. She had short bright red-haired, and she wielded a black sword with orange markings and an unusually long handle.
It was a very peculiar weapon that caught Hiro’s attention. During her fight’s Lilia would use the sword both as a spear and as a sword, and what most impressed Hiro was simply her range. If people choose to distance themselves, the sword would act like a mage’s staff and she could perfectly contend against them.
Should they try to keep her at bay at mid-range she would switch to a spear, before suddenly closing the distance and fighting with it as a sword. She constantly switched back and forth and even though it seemed like such a bothersome weapon originally in Lilia’s hands it was frighteningly powerful.
With her fire magic and gravity magic as well as her mastery over her very unique weapon there were few that could really match her. Though naturally this excluded Baldar and Hiro, as well as the upperclassmen.
Then finally it was the upperclassmen turn to fight.

A Fractal Divide
Lesivar is a city in ascendancy. With recent innovations in magical crafting, the common people are experiencing a boom in comfort and wealth. The nobility, long used to being the stewards of knowledge and power, struggle to adapt to the new world in which they find themselves. A precarious balance has been maintained throughout, but forces stir beneath the surface threatening to send the city spiraling into chaos. This is my first attempt at writing anything longer than a short story, and I welcome any feedback or corrections. I'm posting this as I write, with each chapter going live upon completion. My current pace is about a chapter a day, which I expect to take my through the end of November. From there, I'm shooting for a chapter every two-three days until the book is completed, along with an editing pass of what is already up. I'm planning on three POV characters with unique insight into the story as it unfolds. Each chapter will contain only one POV. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]

A nation is just a means of survival. Metro Manila fell within 5 months of the first report of cannibalism. Once a hyperurbanized region of 15 million inhabitants, it's been reduced to a dead, greenless shell. Most of the infected had since left to ravage the countryside. The central government was nowhere to be found.
