《How I Slayed A Dragon》Chapter 68

(Oct 21)

I was able to sense The Grinch the moment it got near the cemetery where our trap was.

We were hidden underground in a special bunker made of a metal that deflects magic to prevent The Grinch from sensing us.

This should’ve cause us to be unable to sense The Grinch as well, however, The Grinch’s aura was so powerful and so foul, even through the special metal bunker—which is supposed to block magic—I was still able to sense it.

A shiver ran throughout my entire body, it felt like hundreds of tiny needles were pricking and stabbing into my back.

Goosebumps appeared over me, and my hair stood stiff.

Just simply feeling The Grinch’s presence caused me to shrivel up like my balls on a cold winter day.

‘W-what the hell is this magical pressure… I saw The Grinch before, didn’t I? How come I didn’t feel this last time???’

Even though I no longer feel fear due to dragonification, my dragon instincts were telling me to go run and hide in a hole; DO NOT FIGHT THE GRINCH.

But alas, I was not going to back down now.

Not when The Grinch was so close.

“Get ready everybody! The Grinch is here!!”

William shouted out, and all the soldiers who were in the underground bunker with me, rushed to their position.

I could sense The Grinch above us, slowly moving towards our trap.

“On the count of three…”

All the soldiers nodded nervously.

Here we go, this is what we’ve all been waiting for.

“One…”

Aside from William’s counting, there was a complete and utter silence. No one dared to even breath loudly.

“Two…”

The Grinch was nearing the trap…

“Three.”

A soldier flipped a switch.

“NOW!”

KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMM!!!!!

BOOM! BOOOM!! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!

Dozens of explosions rang out from above the bunker and the ground beneath The Grinch exploded and collapsed.

The bunker we were in was connected to a massive hole that was dug out a couple days ago for our trap.

This hole was covered up obviously, and when The Grinch walked near it, we blew it up with dynamite causing The Grinch to fall into our trap.

At the bottom of the hole, was a net made of a special material that absorbs magic, so if someone touches it, they will be weakened.

The sudden explosion created a mini dust cloud which confused The Grinch causing it to fall right into the net as we had planned.

The first thing The Grinch tried to do was obviously to escape from the net, but the moment it jumped into the air, The Grinch was suddenly pulled back down into the net.

Whenever The Grinch moved, it was always pulled back into the net by an unknown force.

What was happening? Web essence!

I had covered the entire net with my web essence ability. This way, it will be harder for The Grinch to escape and move due to the rubbery and stickiness of web essence.

As The Grinch struggled and tried to remove the ropes from it, the more the net would get entangled and it wrapped around it’s entire body, restricting any large movements.

“GRAHHHHH!!!!”

The Grinch roared as it tried to break apart the ropes, but the best The Grinch could do was stretch the ropes a little.

As this happened, dozens of soldiers appeared at the top of the hole. Some of the soldiers had bows, some had guns and there was even a canon.

“FIRE!”

Dozens of projectiles were launched at The Grinch.

Even William joined in.

William grabbed his robe and threw it aside, revealing an all-blue tight suit underneath.

I asked what it was later, and he told me that wearing baggy and loose clothing would be difficult in combat because sometime his ice magic would accidently freeze his clothing.

That why he wears a tight suit for optimization.

His exact words were, “I try not to wear this because a blue tight suit really sticks out and it’s embarrassing so I only wear it when I’m serious.”

William raised his staff and gently tapped the ground.

Frost started covering his entire body, and a thick layer of ice accumulated on him to form a glacial armour that looked like something a warrior would wear.

Dozens of ice shards materialized into existence and the ground beneath him started freezing.

As William exhaled, the air around his breath condensed into an icy fog.

“Phew... It's a beautiful day outside. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming... on days like these, big green furry fuckers like you… should be freezing in hell.”

ZMMMPHHH!!!

William instantly released an outburst of magic which completely froze the air in the hole, encasing The Grinch in meters of dense ice.

The entire hole along with The Grinch and net was covered in ice.

I could see its body frozen solid inside.

A rush of cold air washed over the entire area and all the soldiers stepped back to avoid accidently freezing.

Even I felt the cold through my thick skin and my high resistance.

We trying to go for the best-case scenario; trapping and capturing The Grinch from afar without any direct fighting to avoid casualties.

With The Grinch frozen in ice, trapped in our net with dozens of soldiers surrounding the area, it almost seemed possible…

However, unfortunately, the best-case scenario didn’t happen.

At first, there was a low rumbling, unnoticeable at first but then the rumbling and shaking grew.

The minor rumbling gradually became a tremor, and the entire ground began shaking violently.

Cracks started appearing in William’s ice.

William noticed this and poured more of his magic into freezing the ice again.

But in the end, it was for nothing.

The Grinch let out a deafening screech that quite literally tore through the air.

All the ice that William created suddenly shattered into a million pieces and dispersed into the air.

The Grinch’s screech sent a massive force that traveled outwards, destroying everything in its path.

The shockwave generated by The Grinch was imbued with it’s magic and was so powerful that it forcefully pushed all the magic inside of me, out of my body leaving me momentarily unable to use any magic.

But the worse part was that it even paralysed and rendered me immobilized.

The Grinch’s screeched rang through my entire body, shaking my entire body numb and my vision blurred.

Fuck!

I couldn’t move my body at all.

My body wouldn’t react to what my brain was telling it to do.

‘Snap out of it! Move body! MOVE!!’

I chomped down on my tongue, causing an intense pain to spread through my mouth, but luckily it was exactly what I needed to regain control of my body.

“Gah! Ith hurth! My tonguth, owcth! Fucth…”

Regardless of the pain, at least I was able to move again. Looking around, I saw that the shockwave had dispersed all of William’s spells.

William’s ice armor was now gone, none of his ice remained and I could see dozens of soldiers on the ground.

‘What… the fuck just happened???’ I thought to myself at the time.

Basically, The Grinch released a massive roar that was imbued with it’s magic and it was so powerful that it dispelled all other magics in its vicinity.

Remember when I was dispelling the spell on my wife? I had to control the magic in her body to undo the spell.

It was like trying to untangle and unravelling a ball of yarn.

However, what The Grinch did was like blasting the ball of yarn with enough force to rip the yarn into pieces which in turn, does technically unravel the yarn.

The Grinch was able to undo/ dispel all magic and spells by pure overwhelming strength.

Imagine a locked door.

You could use a key to open it, but that would only work if you were the owner and have the key. Or in this case, the spell user.

The second method to unlock the door is to lockpick it, which would require a lot of skill, control and concentration. That is equivalent to controlling magic to dispel something, like what I did to remove the spell that was placed on my wife.

The third method is forcefully smashing down the door, which is equivalent to what The Grinch did. The Grinch’s screech blew away all other magic in its path.

But this didn’t affect just magic.

Some of the soldiers died the instant that they were hit by The Grinch’s screech.

The soldiers are a lot weaker than I am and have low resistance to outside magic/ physical attacks. So the moment the shockwave hit them, they were fucked.

Their eyeballs exploded into bits of blood and gunk, leaving an empty eye socket… their limbs snapped out of place and some even blew off from their bodies… blood squirted out of their ears and mouth… and their corpse just dropped lifelessly down to the ground.

During the capture the flag match a few days ago, I accidentally used a powerful attack which caused soldiers to go unconscious due to my dragon essence. This was 100x more powerful than that.

‘Fuck… this is bad…’

We already had casualties, and The Grinch had turned the tides in an instant with a simple roar.

My first thought was to stop The Grinch.

It was powerful, and I could tell that I stand no chance against it. But I didn’t need to defeat it, I just need to stall it for long enough for everyone to regain composure and for backup to arrive.

Although we had hoped not to, we did originally intend to fight The Grinch.

Our plan wasn’t a failure just yet.

I ran over to the opening on the side of the bunker and jumped into the hole where The Grinch was in.

The Grinch was just standing there silently, staring at me as I landed several meters away from it.

It’s screech from earlier caused the special ropes to absorb too much magic and explode into tiny pieces like a balloon that’s been filled with too much air.

I raised my sword, and slightly tensed my muscles. Not too much where it’d strain my body, but just tense enough to react as soon as I saw The Grinch move.

The Grinch tilted its head as it looked at me and let out a low growl.

“Kekekwkwkwkwkwkkwkwweeeeeww….”

I was sweating.

The pressure that was pushing down on me from staring this monster in the eyes was immense.

‘Ignore the sweat, if I get distracted even for a moment… it’s game over for me.’

However, no matter how hard I tried, eventually, I had to blink.

And within the milliseconds of my eyes being closed during the blink, The Grinch vanished.

My brain didn’t even register what happened. One moment a big green monster was standing in front of me, and then it just disappeared.

‘Wha-?’

I felt something warm dripping down my stomach.

When I looked down, I saw the right side of my stomach had been cut open and my organs were slowly slipping out of me.

“Ah shit.” I grumbled as I collapsed to the ground.
