《How I Slayed A Dragon》Chapter 49

(Oct 13)
The most obvious thing to do was to run away from Cornelia.
It took me a while to realize, but that was what Cornelia wanted me to do this entire time.
She wanted me to train my magic control, even if I fought back, I would simply just be fighting like usual and be wasting my energy. But if I run and dodge, I can focus on avoiding attacks and controlling my magic.
Also, before we began, Cornelia said to “run as fast and as far as you can, away from her.”
To top that all off, Cornelia picked a track field to train me where there was a lot of space for me to run.
Putting all these obvious clues together, I finally realized I wasn’t supposed to fight her, instead to try to run away and train my magic control which was my main focus.
Train my magic control.
It’s like if someone tried to punch you, and you try to dodge out of the way. Most people would jump back a far distance, but a pro would lean slightly to the right and evade the attack with minimal movement.
Jumping far away to dodge an attack is easier and is safer to ensure that you don’t get hit, while slightly dodging out of the way is more risky, you conserve more energy and you get a better chance to counter attack.
Similar situation here, but with magic control instead. I needed to train my magic usage so I can use minimal usage but still dodge Cornelia’s attacks.
However, it’s easier said than done.
Cornelia is a lot faster than me, and I would occasionally get stabbed in my back.
I heightened my senses so I could try to predict her stabs, but she was absurdly fast even though I was running as quick as I could.
Then, I got an idea.
For the past couple days, I had been trying to come up with ideas for uses for my dragon tail.
Even the most useless skill can be useful if used correctly or used in a clever way, so I tried to think of something to do with it.
And I think I came up with a use for it.
I summoned my dragon tail, which consumed a portion of my dragon essence to materialize and form itself, but the magic used would be worth it if my plan worked.

But what was my plan and this “idea” of mine, you may be wondering?
My plan was to become a human jet plane and to use my dragon tail as a jet engine or a rocket.
The power of magic and dragon essence is fascinating and very complex, even the most masterful of wizards can’t even fully comprehend and understand how magic exactly works, but it is so diverse, flexible and useful.
I experimented with it by injecting my magic and dragon essence into my dragon tail and then releasing it out my dragon tail, I can use the force from releasing the magic and dragon essence to boost myself forward like a jet plane.
As a kid, I would fart and pretend to use the force of the fart to fly into the sky or whatever, but now it’s literally coming true.
I release my dragon essence out of my dragon tail, which produces a sudden boom of energy, thus propelling myself forward and since my dragon tail is made out of my dragon essence, it makes it easier to release it and results in producing even more power than if it were releasing it out of my back.
By doing this, I can simulate being a jet plane and increase my speed by multiple times because I am still running as fast as I can but releasing magic out of my tail increases my speed even further. I was like a living rocket.
I call this skill, “Dragon’s Jet.” (and yes, I came up with this name on the spot while being chased by Cornelia so I didn’t have time to come up with a clever name)
With this skill, I finally matched Cornelia’s speed.
Cornelia and I were running at roughly the same speed when I had Dragon’s Jet activated.
And I felt proud.
However, that lasted for less than a minute when I realized that my magic and dragon essence was being depleted at an insane rate.
The magic that was being consumed when I had Dragon’s Jet activated was astronomical.
I was literally shooting out vast amounts of dragon essence like a rocket to boost myself forward, no shit it’s gonna consume a ton of magic. The skill itself used a lot of magic, but I already had garbage magic control, so it consumed even more.

I feel like an idiot.
This training was for me to train my control and yet I was doing the opposite.
I looked back and saw Cornelia charging at me like a wild beast and started sweating.
If I deactivated my skill, I would get stabbed dozens of times by Cornelia but if I keep it activated than I’ll run dry of dragon essence within 5 minutes MAX.
So I just kept running trying my best to still run fast but keep magic waste to the minimum. However, it did little to nothing until eventually I ran out of magic.
The moment I ran out of magic, Cornelia took this chance and pierced me repeatedly throughout my body with her toothpick.
Ouch.
I collapsed onto the ground, devoid of all magic and had toothpick holes all over my body.
None of them were serious injuries but getting pricked by a toothpick hurt.
It had been less than half an hour since we started training and I was already dead tired. Training with Cornelia was a lot more effective than training as a group with other soldiers.
“Ha…. How are you so fast? I get your magic control is great, but that’s actual insanity. Running that fast consistently and without wasting any magic for so long? How do you do it?”
“I guess I trained a lot, and then it came to me naturally. My job now is to make it come to you too.”
“Got any advice for me?”
“…”
Cornelia gave it a little thought and then she rolled down her sleeve.
She raised her hand and revealed to me a familiar looking bracelet. The same bracelet that William had given to me to train with.
“That’s—"
“William told me you were able to resist the magic restricting bracelet’s effects and you overcame it. I also trained using this, and I haven’t taken it off since I was 16.
This bracelet restricts magic flow but once one learns to manipulate their own magic, you can overcome its effects. In fact, once you get used it, the bracelet’s effects can actually help you with your magic control.”
Then I remembered the feeling of when I had first put on the bracelet. The feeling of having my magic restricted and I had been nearly paralysed.
That was when I had a moment of realization.
The moment when you finally understand something you didn’t get, a feel when you finally understand something you were stuck on, a lightbulb lighting up in my head.
“Cornelia, let’s continue. I think I got an idea of what to do.”
Cornelia grinned at my words and handed me a magic potion and a health potion, which I drank the magic potion instantly to regain a portion of my magic.
I was tempted to save the health potion for later but decided to use it right away because I was in pain, so I poured the health potion over my body wounds.
It felt cold and the stab wounds from Cornelia slowly closed up.
This was my second ever time using a health potion, so I was quite fascinated.
Health potions are quite expensive and are different from healing potions.
Health potions have instant effects and can heal wounds near instantly when you pour its liquids on the wound, while healing potions need to be consumed. Healing potions heal you over a long period of time and speeds up regeneration but takes quite a while.
Both types of health/ healing potions have its limits, healing potions can’t heal diseases or severe injuries and health potions can’t reattach limbs or close big wounds, although the limits and effects depend on the potion quality.
Potions in general are pretty expensive, so I don’t usually get the chance to use any but if I get the chance to, I will use it and enjoy it because it feels good using a potion.
Now that I was somewhat restored, I jumped back up and stretched my body.
Cornelia gave me a hint, and I finally grasped an idea of what I needed to do to improve my magic control.
I knew what I needed to do to gain control of my dragon essence.
