《How I Slayed A Dragon》Chapter 38

(Sep 16)
Last night, three assassins tried to kill me and my family in our sleep.
Well, I guess I should go back to the very beginning and explain what really happened.
Back when I was still in the city and hadn’t headed home yet, after the wyvern attack, I noticed that there were people watching me and stalking me.
A normal person wouldn’t have noticed it but with my dragon senses, I was able to notice these assassins or spies watching me.
Logically thinking, if our kingdom was at the brink of war with a neighboring kingdom and they had sent a wyvern to attack, then it wouldn’t be surprising if they had also sent spies to gather information on us.
The spies must’ve seen my battle with the wyvern and deemed me an unknown rising threat. They didn’t know what to do with me, so they kept observing me.
They must’ve been quite skilled because even with my dragon senses, I was only barely able to detect their presence.
I wanted to lure them out, confirm if my theories were right so I pretended like I didn’t know they were there.
Even if I tried fighting them or confronting them, I wasn’t confident enough in catching them if they ran away, after all they must be quite skilled in stealth.
So, I had to not let them know that I realized they were watching me.
I didn’t know when they were watching, and I was afraid they might read my journal, so I didn’t write about them in my journal.
I needed to tell someone but they might’ve been listening to me so I couldn’t tell anyone as they might find out I know they’re there.
So instead, when I visited William, I slipped him a small note briefly explaining the situation and that was before I had headed home.
I haven’t heard a word from him since and I had almost thought he had forgotten about me or something.
When I had noticed their presence in the city, I realized there was also a chance they may research and look into my background and find out about my family.
If they did, they could harm my family or hold them hostage, using them as leverage against me so I had to make sure my family was safe as the primary priority.
I had mentioned before in my journal I had three reasons why I needed to head home.

One, I simply missed my family. The second reason was to convince them to come back with me to the city. But the third was the main reason.
The third was to ensure my families safety against these assassin spies.
I also met up with Sven.
It was fun catching up with Sven but the main reason I met up with him was not to simply chat.
I said before that he had telepathy, a skill that allowed him to read minds.
Taking advantage of that power of his, I was able to explain the situation to him without actually saying it aloud and eliminating the chances of anyone hearing me.
He was surprised at first when I was telepathically telling him that people were after my life, but he quickly caught on to what was going on and he agreed to help me.
I headed home like usually, while acting as if I didn’t know they were following me and watching my every move.
These last few days were extremely stressful for me, they could strike at any moment, so I had to always be on guard, sleeping with literally one eye open.
Sven was able to ease some of my stress due to him helping me so that helped.
I continued acting normal and then they must’ve decided to simply kill me while I was defenseless so last night they finally attacked.
Honestly, I was sort of glad they finally attacked because it was very stressful to keep pretending.
I did have the idea of running away with my family but if I did, the assassins would probably chase us and it would be very difficult for me to run, fight and defend my family at the same time so I scratched that idea.
It was around 1 – 2 AM, a little after the middle of the night when I sensed them around our house.
Normally they would just spy on us from a nearby tree but this night, they entered my house and that was when I knew that shit was about to go down.
I had was ready and had set up a lot of preparation until now, but I still couldn’t help but feel nervous. I was gambling the safety of my family after all.
The first assassin unlocked my front door by slicing off the locks and silently slipped inside.
I was focusing on this the entire time, trying to predict and figure out their abilities.

My eyes were closed, and I looked like I was sleeping but I was heightening all my other senses and I could visualize the entire surroundings in my mind.
After the assassin entered, he attached strings throughout the house as traps in case we tried to escape.
These strings were no ordinary strings, they were reinforced with magic, and they were sharper than even knives. If you accidently walked into one, it would slice you right into half and they were so thin, you can’t even see it.
But since I could see magic with my dragon eyes, I could see them clearly.
The assassin placed these strings all over the house, all while being silent and not making a single noise.
The second assassin was nearby, using a sleeping AOE magic to put us into deeper sleep and so we won’t wake up.
They were expecting us to already be asleep so the effects weren’t strong, and I was able to resist it but my wife and Gabi wouldn’t be able to wake up anytime soon.
Gabi slept in the room next to me and my wife so I couldn’t defend her, so a couple days before while I was training Gabi, I placed some of my magic inside of her, so if anyone tried to harm her, I could use my magic inside of her and remotely use it to attack the person harming her.
All while this was happening, Sven was watching.
Sven was an illusion magic user, a master of illusion. Although he can only use basic illusion spells like stealth, detect life or muffle and such, his control and skill over these basic skills is master level.
Sven had a couple jobs to do.
His first job was to keep an eye out on my house, so when the assassin attacked, he would alert me just in case I didn’t know via his long-ranged telepathy skill and to support me in combat.
His other job was to get in contact with William.
Since I was being watched by the assassins, I couldn’t contact William for his support, so I asked Sven to go contact William.
William himself was busy in city, so he sent someone else to help me. When I had first heard the news that he was sending someone else, I thought it would be the A ranked assassin, who fought in the tournament as an assassin would be very useful when detecting other assassins and when fighting against assassins, but no.
The support whom William sent was Mona, the A ranker who I spoke to once before.
It was a little awkward since the last time we spoke, it got weird, but I can’t complain as she was helping me.
Although she wasn’t an assassin, she was quite skilled in stealth and in detection so she along with Sven was watching as the assassins were intruding into my house.
The plan was to catch them off guard and make sure to subdue them without killing them, we wanted to get information out of them but also make sure none of them can escape.
I was to fight and make them focus their attention on me while Sven and Mona are to sneak up on them and capture them from behind unnoticed.
It was a delicate plan, and any mistakes could cause things to go wrong.
When the assassin entered my house, I removed William’s magic restriction bracelet he gave me.
For the last couple days, I had not taken it off and when I did, I felt my magic surge inside of me.
I felt powerful now that the bracelet was off, and nothing was restricting my magic flow.
Imagine if suddenly gravity increased by 2x, you will eventually get used to it but when gravity returns to normal, you will feel very light, very nimble, very fast, and very powerful…
The assassin entered my room and thus entering my attack range, I was in peak condition, so I felt confident in this fight.
The assassin pulled out three needles (made out of string) infused with magic and tossed them at me from afar but before the needles could hit anything, I slowed time down and grabbed them.
The assassin was shocked at first, but he quickly composed himself and tried pulling out more needles to attack me with.
However, before he could do anything I jumped at him and grabbed his neck with my one of my dragon claws and choked him.
He struggled and wiggled in my hand, but my dragon grip was strong, he couldn’t escape.
Instead, he tossed a single needle towards my sleeping wife.
Before it could reach my wife though, I grabbed the needle with my other hand.
That fucking bastard…
Trying to kill me is one thing but trying to harm my family is unforgivable.
I was pissed.
