《A Curious World》Arc 2: Chapter 55: A Month's Time

“It’s really been a long time, a month passed by so fast.”, I say as I look out of the carriage running fast, the hooves of the horse clopping on the grassy floor.

The past month has been uneventful, nothing out of the ordinary happened for the rest of the journey. The route to the Assassin’s guild headquarters was long, even by carriage it would take 3 months just to get there.

It’s no wonder that they had to be low key, opting to steal from the caravan with a single assassin.

I let out a sigh, it’s been quite boring to be honest.

If my life were to be a story written by an author, the author must have slacked off for the month or something.

Really, what a lazy author.

You would think something out of the ordinary would happen once in a while.

It’s just been grassland followed after grassland over and over again.

Sylvia and I packed up the items from the caravan, bringing with us only a single carriage and a horse.

It wouldn’t be funny if we ended up being discovered as the ones who robbed that caravan.

We’re carrying riches plentiful enough to even cause a Class 2 mage to take action personally.

If we were found out, our bodies would be the ones scattered on the grasslands next.

Our cover story is that I’m a prodigal young master who sneaked out of his house in search of adventure, bringing along only one maidservant. That’s a tall tale, since no aristocratic family would let their treasured offspring sneak out so easily.

Hence, the story is a tragic one. I brought along my personal guard, and a squad of elite guards from the house followed my incognito as well. However, this was all for naught in front of true strength.

One day, as we cooked on a bonfire in the middle of the forest, we attracted a Class 1 magical beast. The magical beast was a huge towering wolf, swiping at me the moment it arrived.

My personal guard rushed into action, defending me with his sword.

However, just parrying the attack he broke his sword. The strike also dislocated his sword wielding arm.

Just when all hope seemed lost, the elite guard appeared, bravely fending off the magical beast.

They were fighting on even ground with the beast, but just when they thought they had an advantage when they pushed back the beast, it let out a strong howl, echoing through the forest.

Hordes of wolfs came running from behind the wolf leader, as the elite guard was swamped.

Knowing that they weren’t likely to survive this, the leader shouted passionately for me to run away.

Hearing this, I grabbed the hand of my maidservant and ran desperately in fear.

A tear in his eye as he looked upon my retreating back, he shouted again, shouting, “Take care of our families, young master!”

And thus was the tragic backstory of Xue Zhou.

I would have liked to use the same name as before, but simply swapping the characters of my name around has a lack of effort clearly seen. I’m not asking to be found out.

With the story prepared, we set off.

Thus, we’re here.

I thought of such an exciting and tragic story of a young master learning about the reality of the world but there’s no one else to share it to.

We didn’t even meet anyone on the way.

I let out a disgruntled sigh in boredom again.

“Dear god, can you just stop sighing?!”, an irritated Sylvia pops in her head into the carriage, her right eyebrow twitching.

“It’s super annoying.”, she says directly.

“I’m just bored.”, I say, folding my arms with a defeated look.

“Yea, like I’m not. If you’re so bored go sleep or something, at least you’re not the one that has to carry the reins of the horse in the hot sun.”, she grumbles.

“Fine, fine, I’ll stop. It’s been hard on you…”, I look to the side and say weakly.

Since we let go of all reservations when we found out we were both reincarnators, Sylvia has adopted this personality, completely giving up her earlier cute persona.

“I liked you better when you acted cute…”, I muttered softly to myself.

“Huh?!”, she caught it, letting out a dissatisfied tone.

“Leave your dreams for when you’re sleeping, Mister Xue!”, she says without restrain, chuckling, throwing a small rock at me.

I resign myself to my fate and simply start meditating for the day to pass time as usual.

Luckily, for the sake of my boredom (and story progression), we finally meet another group of people in a few days.

As we leisurely drive the carriage, we spot a row of carriages and caravans in the distance.

As we reach closer, the simple gold adornments of the few carriages in front catch our eye.

Gold is a rare resource even here, and using it for nothing but the purpose of ‘fancying’ your carriage… is really a luxury.

Royals have embellished crests on their carriages, which are absent here…

A merchant group, I assume?

I peek out of the carriage as I look ponderingly.

As we near, I disembark from my carriage to greet them.

It’s courtesy to greet fellow travellers if you meet on the road.

I look anticipatedly at the front carriage for the first person other than Sylvia I’ve seen in a month.

Contrary to my expectations, a butler steps out of the carriage first, followed by a lady dressed in a flamboyant-looking dress. The lady looks about 30 or so.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out she’s in charge here.

She looks at me, scanning my simple clothes with her piercing gaze.

Noticing something, her eyes show some surprise, but she quickly hides it.

Her stern face relaxes slightly, as she expresses, “I greet you, fellow traveller. “, giving a light curtsy.

“Likewise, Ma’m. I’m Xue Zhou, from the Xue Family, a Baron family in the east. May i have the pleasure of knowing you?”, I bow lightly, introducing myself.

She relaxes her expression again, saying confidently, “We’re from Si Trading House, in the Shui Kingdom. We’re en-route on some urgent matters, so you’ll have to pardon my discourtesy.”

She seems to have lost her interest after knowing I’m a mere Baron’s child. From another nation, nonetheless.

She turns to the butler, snappily saying, “Set off!”

I smile wryly, as I look at Sylvia, to continue our journey.

We still continue to travel the same way, however, hence we decided to follow behind their caravan.

This may be slower, but at least they’ll deal with any bandits or wild animals that show up.

We’re quite a way from the forest, so there shouldn’t be any magical beasts.

Here, humans are the ones you should be wary of.

If we didn’t carry only a single simple carriage, looking like we have nothing of value, we would likely have gotten robbed on our journey here.
