《A Curious World》Chapter 40: The Wolves Attack
Advertisement
The designated route isn’t a paved road, it’s just a frequently used route by travellers.
As such, the many travellers eventually levelled the ground with their carriages and footprints, allowing us to face little obstruction in driving the caravan through.
It’s not much different from the route yesterday, except for the fact that we were surrounded by trees in every direction. The air’s humid too, making for a slightly unpleasant morning journey.
Of course, I was sitting comfortably in the merchant carriage while the servants slogged out in the Sun.
The mercenaries were in their caravan too, they just took turns being the lookout. The shift’s about every 2 hrs, it seems.
As I observe the peacefulness of mother nature, suddenly I hear the sound of leaves rustling loudly.
I’m jolted out of my thoughts by the noise, turning to face the direction it came from.
“Rawrrr!!”, a wolf roars threateningly.
It seems we came across a wolf pack.
It’s quite unlucky since we’ve haven’t journeyed for long, but nothing special.
They’re like the P*dgeys and R*attatas in a certain game; they appear occasionally when you’re in tall grass, but even your level 5 starter can destroy them.
I lean forward in anticipation of the abilities of our guards, however.
The lookout currently, the Ogre man, notices the disturbance quickly.
“Enemies!”, he shouts into the caravan, before quickly leaping out it in a connected motion.
He springs high into the air, exhibiting great control over his bodily muscles.
With a loud thud, he lands right in the middle of a group of wolves, exhibiting a domineering aura.
He tightens his grip on his battleaxe, ignoring the other wolves to stare right at the eyes of the wolf pack leader.
The wolf leader stares at him unflinchingly, as if judging his strength.

It looks around the Ogre for a bit, confirming that there was no other enemy nearby.
Making his decision, the wolf leader roars, prompting the pack to rush into action.
“AWOOO!!!”, the pack roars in unison, mouths wide, preparing to rip everything in sight into shreds.
“Hmph.”, the man scoffs at their inability to sense danger and escape.
Running directly forward, he charges towards the pack as if in suicide.
He’s surrounded by 5 wolves including the leader quickly, seemingly in a bad situation.
However, he simply grips his battleaxe with his other hand, holding the axe with both hands.
Breathing in a large breath of air, he raises the axe up slowly… before quickly slamming it down!
This move of his also activated his skill, Additional Impact, a common skill possessed by Knights and Berserkers. In response to huge attacks which cause reverberations in the air, the skill doubles the reverberations and changes them into a sharper force.
*WHAMMMMM!!*
A loud sound explodes in the air, sending all the 6 wolves near the Ogre flying.
The other mercenaries have already gotten out of the caravan into action at this point, guarding the carriage closely, in case a single wolf breaks through and damages the goods.
The elf archer, Wind, stay firmly there to guard the goods, preparing her bow.
The textbook adventurer, Zhe Yun, guards in front of Wind with a short sword at the ready.
Our loli dwarf, prepares to rush towards the Ogre, in the direction of the wolves. She wields a large hammer with both hands, an act unbefitting her small stature.
She’s a berserker afterall, she wouldn’t be very useful in the act of guarding goods. She’s more likely to damage the goods themselves if she were to fight near them.
The elf archer standing in the back row is expected as well, while the versatile adventurer can guard both the archer and the goods from close combat.

She lets out a soft warcry, launching her hammer into the air by throwing it.
The heavy hammer flies up into the sky, before plummeting down towards the centre of a cluster of wolves. The wolves notice this obvious attack, instinctively moving aside to avoid it, the hammer then slams into the ground with loud boom, causing the ground to crack beneath it.
The handle of the hammer has a blue aura emitting out of it, which suddenly expands into a silhouette. It’s a silhouette of Sylvia, and it quickly formed, before Sylvia vanished from her original spot, appearing beside the hammer, holding it.
It’s the iconic skill for the Berserker class, “Battlefield Arrival”.
It’s an amazing skill that allows the user to teleport to any destination thrown. However, the downside is that it can’t be used when the user is under any attack. As such, it’s only used to make a preemptive strike on the enemy, or… well, to make a dramatic appearance.
Swinging her large hammer around, she swiftly eliminates the wolves surrounding her.
When I find the time to look back at the Ogre, he had already finished off the 5 wolves surrounding him, only being left with the wolf leader, who seems to have suffered grave injuries from the exchange.
Meanwhile, the few scratches the Ogre sustained were discreetly being healed by his axe. It seems that the axe absorbs the blood of its enemies, and grants the user some form of recovery in exchange.
The wolf leader recognises that he’s in a bad situation, starting to look around for an opportunity to escape. Eventually, he roars, giving the command for retreat.
He himself, however, doesn’t take the opportunity to escape, with the Ogre right in front of him.
The wolf leader runs to the side instead, now facing both Sylvia and the Ogre.
“AWOOOOO!!!”, It howled loudly, seemingly uttering its last words.
With a determined gaze, he rushed forward towards the two, executing an weird skill which seemed to make his fur a bright glowing red.
Sylvia and the Ogre, seeing this, tense up suddenly, preparing for impact.
The Ogre takes the lead, taking a step forward to swing his battleaxe in a forward motion.
The axe and the wolf’s head seem to be about to collide, when suddenly…
The wolf leader ducks down, avoiding the blow.
Brandishing his sharp canine teeth, preparing to bite off a chunk of the Ogre’s flesh.
*Swoosh*
At this moment, a green arrow flies over, hitting the wolf right in the middle of his head.
His deathly charge is interrupted, as he falls helplessly towards the ground.
*Slump*
The battered wolf leader body drops down upon the cold forest floor.
He laid helplessly on the ground, before struggling with difficulty, just to raise his head to look behind him.
Seeing that his pack had already ran some distance away, he seems to have raised the corner of his mouth slightly, before his black eyes faded out... as he lost all signs of life.
The Ogre looks coldly upon this scene, while Sylvia is stunned for a brief moment. She then breaks out of it, and starts to gather some leaves, wanting to give him a simple burial.

This story delves into information about it neth and gets into the neth elf experience a few times in this story. You've been warned. Also note: As much as I didn't want to put it in this story, avoiding it was a futile effort on my part. There were things I needed to explain about Soletus and it's hard to write personal tales about character when avoiding talking about certain personal aspects of them.
