《A Curious World》Chapter 11: Magic Structures

That said, the flashy looking noble is indeed a Prince of the Kingdom. He’s Prince Lei Zong, the second prince in line for the throne. His mother’s the favoured concubine, so he’s one of the the two frontrunners for the throne. The other is obviously the Crown Prince, son of the Queen.

He’s known for being arrogant and pompous, but he’s still well-liked in noble circles partly due to his identity, and his talent in business. He’s set up a chain of magic item shops catered towards nobles known as the Wind Pavillion, and the business is doing amazingly well. It was even commended by the reigning King himself. Certainly unexpected for the arrogant playboy type.

As I was thinking about this, the teacher walks in. It’s a blue haired lady in a ponytail. She’s dressed neatly in her mage robes, which has the emblem of a Class 2 Mage.

She motions for the class to be seated, tapping lightly on the podium.

The nobles shuffle to their seats.

It’s nothing surprising, any Class 2 Mage is incredibly powerful and definitely holds an important identity. A Class 1 Mage might not be able to handle the various powers behind the nobles here, but a Class 2 Mage most certainly can.

“Let’s continue where we left off for class previously. I’ll be going through the schematics behind the forming of the formula for apprentice spells, notably the spell “Ice Lance”. After this, we’ll be moving to the training ground for some practical training on the spells. Any questions?”

“No? Alright, I’ll start class then. The basics in the forming of any magic formula involves the knowledge of the element that you’re utilising, the shape you want it to form, as well as the force you intend for it to have. However, the shape doesn’t just mean the external appearance of the spell, such as my Ice Lance, but also the interior of it. I modified my apprentice spell Ice Lance from the spell Ice Shard, and to do that, I had to envision not just the external spear shape, but also the interior. Olden Mages used to ignore that and simply solidify the spell by filling the whole object with mana, like a balloon being filled with water.”

“The consumption of such spells tended to be huge, with the old Ice Shard spell using up all the mana of a Rank 3 Apprentice. Now, by simply applying a helix structure within the same spell (Ice Shard), a Rank 3 Apprentice is able to unleash 5 or even 6 of the same spell. This is why we as mages engineer new structures and ways to implement them, to have the perfect cost-to-performance ratio.”

“As for the Force you intend a spell to have, this falls under the Concept of Force, proven by the long deceased Class 6 Mage, Enhart Longinus. This Concept explains that the more force you intend onto a spell, doesn’t directly equate to the same force performed. There are many other factors, such as the durability of the spell structure, the length of the formula, the speed at which the spell is being performed…”

I have studied the books provided to me by the maids, but having an actual teacher to explain it is another valuable perspective to look at. Hence, I try to stay focused to learn from her. She continues the class for another 2 hours in this fashion as I listen attentively.

“That’ll be all for theory today. Please prepare to move to the training area, students.”, She says as she packs her belongings.
