《I Was Monster Once, Now I Am Human》A failure only when it comes to Love

There was a certain high school girl who works part-time in a particular cafe. It was her job to serve customers while staying composed and well-mannered with a big smile on her face. Though right now, it was her break-time and she started walking to a park near her work-place to spend her break and eat her home-packed meal in silence. The park almost stays empty at this time of the day; Afternoon. It was this time of the day to relax and be herself; there was no need for her to put a smile on her face for the sake of customers. There was no more customer. Right now, the smile on her face was of her own.
She walks towards a place in the park, where she often eats her launch. There was an outdoor wooden bench to relax on, near the walkway and under shadows, of a big tree. The tree protects her from the sun above her head. It is a great spot for her to spend her break, but this time, half of the bench had occupied by someone else
" A middle-schooler? " she mumbles. What is he doing here at this time of day? She ignored the boy and sat beside him on another half of the unoccupied bench and started unpacking her launch. The boy glances at her, at a specific spot multiple times. That place was where her breasts were. When she noticed his glances, She stares back at him; With unspoke words, She said, " Don't you dare look at me that way! " and the boy seems to have understood those unspoken words since, after that, he kept looking at the ground beneath his feet. The boy appears to be a few years younger than her, but the clothes he was wearing were a little strange. He wore a long trench coat, under that coat was a white shirt and a red tie, and black pants. Maybe, that is the uniform of his middle school? Nonetheless, It doesn't make him any less suspicious. To dare stare at women.
" I am Adger, what is your name, lady? " The boy suddenly asked while still looking towards the ground. The smile on the girl's face disappeared when she heard those words. She had already started eating her launch and didn't seem to care about answering so, after a few seconds of silence, Adger[Name of the boy] understood; She's not going to answer, uh... is that so strange of me to ask for her name? We have already spent a few minutes together, so; that should've been fine. Geez, ladies are strange. So, Adger thought. Both of them spent about 10 minutes together without exchanging any words. She had already eaten everything from launch, and now, she was relaxing on the bench. And Adger, He didn't look back at her after that. " my name is Fenti, I work just around the corner, at a cafe as a waitress " She answered to Adger ten minute later. That answer surprised Adger; He thought this girl isn't kind of a girl who would talk to strangers. Eh? So, it was she didn't want to be disturbed while she was waiting? Goss, ladies are strange. Adger opens up from previous awkward silence and, finally, looks at her. But this time, not at her breast and says, " Oh, I see. I'll visit your cafe sometime if you don't mind " Fenti relaxes a bit more and spread her arms along the bench as she says, "Sure if you visit the cafe, I'll greet you with a smile." Adger chuckles a bit on her words " Ah.... *phfft* I see. That would be great! " Adger replied. She stares at Adger for laughing, packs her bento back and stands up " Only at the cafe. Bye and good luck with your middle-school " After these words, She starts walking towards the street. Middle school?? No, I am a high-schooler now, Bitch! Those were Adger thoughts, but He didn't bother to speak these words out-loud, Knowing the response wouldn't be pleasing. Arggh...This is so boring...I hope to meet him soon.

" He'll make my life more exciting...*sigh* One more day to go, uh? " Adger says indistinctly.
[Next Day At the Park-- Around the same time.]
Adger was at the same spot as yesterday, waiting for certain someone to shows up; Obviously, It was the girl from yesterday, Fenti. She didn't show up! Why does my love story always end before it even begins?! It could've been a perfect meeting of an awkward girl to someone handsome like me! I mean, my life could've turned into a rom-com... I guess I'll visit that cafe of her's. Adger lefts the wooden bench and starts heading towards the street in search of a cafe. The cafe was not that hard to find. The cafe was just outside the park; In front of the park's exit. Why didn't I see it before coming to the park?
When Adger opened the door of the cafe, A bell rang above his head; He stops and looks at the bell for a brief moment and then continues walking. " This is the first time... " He mumbles. He looks around the cafe; There were a few tables, all empty. A young male receptionist sees Adger while Adger was looking at everything suspiciously, asks Adger,
" Sir, would like a glass of water? " Receptionist was the only person in the cafe except for Adger. Adger looks at the receptionist and then, He reaches both of his hands in his pant's pocket, in search of something. Phew, I got the credit card... "Yes! I would, one glass of water." Adger said as he starts to walk towards the receptionist. In cold sweet, Adger offers a black credit card to the receptionist. I think this should suffice! I can even buy a sports car with it, and a drink, it can't cost more than that!
The receptionist looks at Adger in confusion, and Deep within his mind, He searches for an answer for the current situation. He didn't buy anything, did he? And, a black credit card?? He must be rich. " Sir, You are mistaken about something. Water is free of charge in cafes. " The receptionist said with a sincere smile on his face. Adger had never visited such a place alone, It was not his fort, paying bills. That was the job of someone else. He puts away his credit card in his pocket, takes the glass of water the receptionist offered. After drinking the water, He thanks the receptionist " Thanks. You are an honest person. " Adger said.
"It was my pleasure," and the receptionist answered. Adger stares at the receptionist for a few seconds, It was a bit strange for the receptionist, but he endures it since it was his job, out of nowhere Adger asks " How much does your job pay? " Without thinking much, The Receptionist answers honestly, " Hmm... About 300 kc a day."
" I see, How much does a coffee cost in your cafe? " Adger asks.
" On average, it is 50kc "
" 50... So, you earn about six coffee worth of money in a day. Isn't your earning way too low? "

The receptionist smiles a bit. He is a rich kid, but yet, he wants to know about middle-class people's life? " Well, it is not. You see, This cafe is a little expensive, to be honest. On-street, you can buy a cup of coffee for an as low price as 5kc. Yes, Taste would be some-what different but not worth ten times more price here. "
"Then, aren't you--- like, scamming people?! "
"No! We are not! It people's choice for what they want to buy. I won't force them to buy coffee here- they always have the choice to buy it on the street."
Adger stays in silence for a moment after hearing the receptionist's answer; It took some time for him to grasp the concept around, A coffee from Caffe and a coffee from the street, but he did, eventually. And then, He gets to the main point,
"what is your name? "
Adger wanted to approach the subject slowly but-- He has given up on it and now, It was time for him to be a little aggressive; Being aggressive is something he's expert at.
The receptionist answers, " My name is Iqbal. I recently graduated from high school and now working here. "
Adger changes his expression and then stares at The Receptionist while he asks, " Say, are you interested in earning some money? Like 100,00000kc? " Even though Adger had put forward such an expression, serious face. The receptionist didn't take him seriously. " uh-oh, 10nc-- Now that's some money. Hahaha, where did you get that much money? " Even if someone were to hold a black credit card, This amount of money was impossible for one single person, So, such was common senes. But Adger, He is someone who isn't bounded by common sense " You are not taking me seriously, are you? " Response to Adger's words, Iqbal, The Receptionist gave a smile. " Hm... You know what, give me your account number-- " Adger said, and since Adger knew Iqbal wouldn't take him seriously and even if he asks for account number, There was the possibility of Iqbal refusing so, This time, Adger reaches his back intending to grab the gun he had kept in a well-hidden gun holster belt.
"Boss....? " Was the word Adger heard from the direction of the main exit/enter; he looks at the main gate, where he entered from and saw a person standing at the entrance. The person standing at the gate was Magnus, a member of the Kichiro family. " I thought you were in the park. We have to go, Albert from the Neslete family is waiting. " Said Magnus while standing at the gate.
When Adger heard those words, He couldn't help but smirk-- He removes his hand from Holster and replies to Magnus, " Oh-- I see. " He was waiting for this moment for a while, and finally, He could meet this person called Albert. " Sorry, Iqbal. I'll have to go now. But I shall come back for a drink with my friends. "
"You are welcome anytime. " Iqbal replied with a smile.
When Adger stands up and starts to walk towards the exit, Iqbal looks at Adger's shirt; It folded onto itself- He could barely see it, but "was that, A gun on his back...? " He murmurs. " Naa-- Must be a toy " So, He ignores it.
[A Minute Later]
The cafe was empty now- Iqbal was cleaning tables and doing his chores in the cafe to keep it tidy for customers when his two colleagues, the manager, and the helper enter the cafe with worried expressions on their faces." Why are you so late, guys? " He looks at his colleagues and instantly asks before could he see their facial expressions. The manager of the cafe looks at Iqbal. The other one stood in silence and said, " I just came back from the police station... Fenti is missing since yesterday. " Iqbal stood still for a moment when he heard those words; Iqbal stares at them for a second before he said "... Let's hope for the best. We can't do anything. " The manager looks at Iqbal in disappointment and then, quietly walks to the room in the back and the co-worker, He was still standing there, Looking at Iqbal-- " Why are you acting ignorant? You, Ruffle, and I, we know very well what happened. Then, Why are we not helping her? " His co-worker said. As Iqbal walks by his co-worker, towards the counter, He says, "Riezail, We have left that world. We are now, but commoners. Don't waste your time and get to work. " Even though Riezail heard Iqbal loud and clear, he couldn't help but clench his fist-- " Damn it! I want to kill those bastards... For lying their dirty hands on my friend." Riezail said these words in a voice that none could hear and kept it to himself. He felt confined by his boss, Iqbal, and He couldn't do anything without Iqbal's permission; Acting on his own meant betrayal.
"You, my friend, why are you scared? "
I might be a failure---When it comes to love, But--
"Aha, the kid from before. Did you forget something? "

This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...) I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it! [Discord] — for those of you who want to hang out and chat. Cover art (fullsize): Path of Revelation, by taenaron (Tobias Roetsch), modified by Etzoli. Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time.
