"God. Dammit. Not you." Taki begrudgingly took Daisuke's hand and allowed himself to be pulled to his feet.
"It's only fair that we help you out - I think we accidentally got your team into this mess."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, Yuuki over there tossed a grenade at that horned mother fucker and caused the tunnel back that way to implode."
Yuuki waved apologetically.
"You had grenades!?" Benzo half-groaned, half-yelled in the background.
Daisuke ignored him. "We had to walk all the way around to get back here and, well...looks like we caused you all to fall into a level that was a little over your heads."
Taki started to protest but realized that he was right. they had totally been in over their heads. The only reason they weren't dead was luck.
"Anyway, we'll help you get out of here - the main shaft is just up ahead. If you all hadn't been unlucky enough to run into that swarm, you would have been home free."
"Thanks Daisuke. I...I appreciate it." Taki was almost choking on the words, but he had to say it.
"By the way, what happened to the Minotaur anyway?" Daisuke asked as the group began to make their way through the tunnel.
"We injured it, but it got away. It has some kind of special power - it can manipulate the walls. Make them move around.
"That red stuff...so that's why we couldn't find it on the way back."
"Wait...are you going back after it!?" Taki couldn't imagine actually hunting that creature.
"Of course. That thing is probably worth tons of XP. If I can kill it, I might get up to level twelve."
Taki was in disbelief, both at Daisuke's confidence and the fact that he had jumped at least two levels in the last couple of days. "How the hell are you almost level twelve!?"

Daisuke smirked. "It's a secret. I might tell you one day, but for now - no way."
They were finally at the main shaft. Daisuke pressed a button and the lift that had carried C-team to the first level above arrived, the rusted gates clanging open.
Taki considered his thoughts for a moment as they all filed into the janky lift. "By the way, I'm sorry about your friend."
Daisuke's expression hardened. "Yeah, me too. If I get a chance, I'm going to kill that old bastard."
Taki understood. He had felt the same way. The only thing that had stopped him had been the voice. He decided to take a small risk. "What stopped you before?"
Daisuke tensed. "Just...it wasn't the right time. As soon as they give us guns, though, it's over."
Taki nodded. So Daisuke wasn't ready to open up just yet. He had hoped his rival might have more information about the voice. Not knowing much about the reality of their present situation, however, Taki wasn't comfortable asking about it out loud just yet. It didn't seem safe.
C-Team waved goodbye to A-team, thanking them for the help, and boarded a bus. Daisuke and his team seemed to have a renewed motivation to re-enter the crater and find the Minotaur. Taki wondered if their conversation had held any impact on that.
The ride to the hospital was uneventful. More destruction, more ruined buildings on display, but the hospital was thankfully intact for the most part. There was barely anyone in the lobby and only a few hospital staff, who seemed to all be caring for teams of students such as themselves. It was clear that most encounters didn't leave people injured - they left them dead.
Daisuke had his leg set and was resting comfortably in a room shared by a few other teens, all of whom had been incapacitated during the crater raid.

"So he'll be okay!?" Sakura brightened after the doctor shared the news.
"Yeah, he'll be fine," the doctor replied, "it's just a normal break. He'll have to stay off of it for about a month or so, but it will heal more or less on its own."
"Oi - team," Natsuki interrupted, waving her smart phone. The principle called; we're to report back to the school barracks as soon as possible. They want to be briefed on what we saw down there, apparently." The doctor excused himself to see other patients.
Sakura sighed, exasperated. "We haven't been home at all since this started...I'm getting tired of sleeping in cots at the school."
"Agreed. And the school and government are doing a lot of asking and telling, but not much in the way of rewarding us. I don't know what their plan is, but this isn't feasible in the long run." Natsuki frowned.
"You ladies go - I'm going to stay with Benzo so he doesn't get lonely."
"You just don't want to go back to the school!" Sakura pouted playfully.
"So what if I don't?" Taki winked.
"Fine. We'll go. But if they ask for you, I'm not covering for you." Natsuki waved a finger at him.
"Wouldn't expect you to." Taki grinned.
"Come on, let's get going. I want to get this over with." Natsuki grabbed Sakura by the elbow.
"Bye. Tell Benzo we hope he heals up soon!" Sakura waved as she was half-dragged away.
You made the right choice, he heard the voice say as the girls walked away into the night. Your friend needs you here and we need to talk.
"Yes," he agreed, "we really need to talk."

Joie de Vivre
A modern man chased immortality and found it. In a mixture of good and bad luck, he was re-born as part of the Uzumaki clan from the Naruto-verse, some few years before their scheduled destruction. But if Daichi were the sort to allow a little thing like fate to get in his way, he'd never have survived in the first place. Dedicated, intelligent, chock full of ideas from a technologically advanced society, and perfectly willing to scorch the earth, he sets out to avert history. Can he avert canon, save the Uzumaki, and forge his people into a mighty nation? Or will he fail, dooming his clan to extinction? At the end of the day, all he wants is a good life. And considering even Death itself didn't stop him, he pities whoever gets in his way. ================== Tags: Naruto, Reincarnation, OC, eventual multi-cross. ================== Author's (Brief) Note: Back by popular demand. This was my first significant fanfic (and fic in general). I wasn't happy with the writing as time went on, and took it down, but years later am still getting requests to put it back up so I guess some people liked it. Newly re-released as I finish some minor editing, there are about 100,000 words (~360 RRL pages) already written, so releases should be fast until I catch up with the backlog. That said, it may languish in hiatus at that point if the interest isn't high enough to merit continuing, so if you're the type to only read finished stories (or ones where the author promises to do so), I am very specifically not promising that. On the other hand, if enough people read, like, review, comment, rate, etc. then it will get added to my writing schedule. Generally, the character is based on a “how badass could someone who hasn't done ridiculously crazy shit be? Or, how does someone with the potential, in another setting, with a lot of luck, to be a badass act and develop as a modern, productive member of society? And then how would they deal with the Naruto-verse?” Please, please do not judge my writing by this. Unless you really like it, in which case fine, do, but recognize my other writing is likely better (unless it’s that one MTG/ASoIaF/SW fic I did over on SB as a speed-writing experiment, which is also pretty terrible).

Game Changer - Day Dreams
The greatest foe that man shall face lies within himself: his own mind. It can contort the world around him and make friends seem like enemies. Most often times we cannot see these delusions for what they are, the daydreams and the nightmares; and worst of all the crushing despair that cloys all we do and makes it seem for naught. One such soul in the depths of his own despair met an untimely end, but with his dying breath he made a plea, a plea to live. And so it was a being, neither human nor god or anything inbetween chose to save a life out of pity. But it did not understand the consequences of its actions, the changes a single life could bring. Like a pebble dropped into an ocean, first a ripple, then a wave, and soon all the lands of the world would be drowned before its might... So begins a new life, in a new world. While those who once knew him call it a game he calls it home. Now the question will arise, how far will he go to defend it.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
