《A king's reincarnation》Chapter 21: A Black fox

"Hey hey, look, do you think that's the second prince?"
"Where? waahhhh, I think it's really him, he looks so handsome."
"I expected him to be good looking, but not to this extent."
"I hope he looks over here."
Every time there are maids or people passing by and seeing me, all they do is talk about me, seeing as they will also become my subordinates, I guess it's only right for me to give them a little greeting.
I looked over to their direction and gave them a light smile and a little nod as a greeting.
"Kyaaaa! He really looked at us!"
"Ahhhh, I think I could already die right this instant."
"Hahhhh, it's always the same reactions.." I said to myself.
After a few more minutes of waiting, a little girl with blonde hair and sky blue eyes appeared in front of me. At first I didn't recognize her, but due to their overly similar atmosphere, I called out to her.
"Airi?"
"Ehh!? How did you know it was me?" asked the girl with shock and confusion in her face.
"Your atmosphere is still the same, you just changed how looked outside."
"Is that so? wait.. how did you even know what kind of atmosphere I have!?"
"Just an instinct. Anyways, is that some kind of magic? It's pretty incredible, how someone can change one's appearance this much." I said as I observed her new form.
"Oh this? yeah, it's an illusion magic, It allows me to take another person's appearance for more than 5 hours, that way, no one will be able to recognize me."
"Heh? Having that seems pretty convenient, you won't have to sneak around like a criminal if you wanted to walk around."
"I know right? now then, since I apologize for taking a lot of time, we still have 3 hours left until the sun sets, so let's go!!" said Airi in a cheerful manner.
The two of us started walking, the moment we left the gate, I felt 7 presences hiding in the shadows. Among them was Heize, it looks like they're watching us secretly.
Since I knew that they weren't hostile, I just proceeded to enjoy the little walk I'm having. After walking for more than half an hour, we've finally reached the plaza.
I looked around and saw many buildings and houses made of stone, There were also people performing entertainment shows on the side of the streets, there is one bard singing a pretty song beside the fountain with a significant number of spectators. There were mini shops that sells a huge variety of things, All in all, the atmosphere feels pretty lively and fun.
The smell of the food from the stalls nearby were also enticing that I couldn't help but be curious of what it tastes like.
"Want to try them?" Asked Airi when she saw me looking at the stalls.
"mm" I answered as I nodded my head.
Both of us walked over to a certain food stall selling skewered meats, the signboard in front of it says 'Grilled tree serpent'

"Grilled tree serpent?" I asked.
"Nii-sama, you've never ate one before?"
"From what I remember, no."
Due to the different cultures in the countries on Earth, I was able to try different food. I experienced eating snakes when I was caught and thrown by the enemies into the Amazon. In order to survive, I had to eat whatever was edible in that forest, and when I was on the verge of dying from hunger, A strange tribe rescued me and fed me with different kinds of food, since beggars can't be choosers, I just ate whatever they gave me, as long as it's harmless, even if it tastes like shit.
As a sign of gratitude, when I got back to Japan, I used some of my money to give them more than a hundred boxes of relief good containing foods, medicines, clothing and tools that they can use for mining, farming, hunting, and many more. At first, when they found out who I really am, they became a little wary and scared, they refused my offerings at first, but after a little talk they finally accepted it and thanked me. I also left some of my subordinates to teach them how to cook and use the medications for a few days.
"Is this Tree serpent good?" I asked the little girl beside me.
"Of course they are, they are one of the tastiest meat you can taste, despite their delicious taste, you can have them for cheap."
"Is that so... I'd like to try one then."
"How is it?"
"....this is quite good." I replied to her as I took a bite.
Maybe because of my current attire, but we're gathering quite the attention. Most of them are talking about the two of us being people from foreign countries.
"That child is wearing some strange clothes."
"I don't think I've seen them before, do you think they're nobles from another country?"
"If they are, they would've headed back to their own countries already because of the current war happening between us and the Jahal kingdom."
"One is an adorable little girl, while the other is a tall and handsome lad with silver whi.... wait, doesn't that seem to fit the description of the second prince!?"
"Oh? you're right! don't tell me he actually is..."
Shit, it looks like we've been found out.
"Let's hide, quickly!" Said Airi as she quickly grabbed my wrist and dragged me into a dark alley. We managed to avoid the mob, but there are still some who went looking for us so we went deep further down the alley.
"It looks like we're safe here."
"You really know your way around huh?"
"Well sometimes, I sneak out of the castle to walk around, so I have the general layout of this entire area."
After catching her breath for a few minutes, we both decided to go out of the opposite street to avoid our pursuers. But just as we're about to head off, we heard the cry of a child from another dark alleyway.

"Nooo!! let go of me! Let go!!" cried the little child.
Using my enhanced vision, I can see 1 little girl and 6 men with huge physique, from the way they move and breathe, they must be people much more stronger than the average person, they also seemed a little trained in fighting.
The little girl is bound in chains and is being dragged by a bald guy with tattoos all over his body.
"Human trafficking?" I muttered to myself.
Airi who also seemed to notice them pulled me into a corner to observe their actions.
"They are... slave traders!? But how did they get here!?"
Slavery huh, I only saw these cases when I was in the Lawless land, hundreds of people being forced to work until death, while some women are being used by brutes as an outlet for their disgusting lust.
"I have to save her!" Airi said as she tried to jump out of hiding.
I grabbed her collar in order to stop her from making a bad decision.
"Nii-sama, why are you stopping me?"
"Don't act recklessly, there are 4 more people who seems to be their allies who is hiding. If you attacked them just like that, you would've been the one in danger."
"..."
"And also, let's watch and follow them for now, they might be hiding more captives in the place where they're headed off to. If we alert them now, we won't be able to rescue the others."
"Yes."
After following them for a while, they finally stopped in front of a certain house. It was dark, but with my vision, it's as if I'm still on the brightly lit streets.
I sensed 21 additional presences coming from inside of that house, 6 of them excudes a hostile feeling, while the remaining 15 is very weak.
"Airi, after counting to 3 cover your eyes and ears and don't release them until another 3 seconds pass. Understood?"
"Eh? B-But why?"
"Trust me, just do it."
"...."
"Very well. 3...2..1!" Airi closed her eyes and covered her ears tightly. The moment the countdown reached 1, I instantly disappeared from my spot and started killing the 16 slave merchants. After 3 seconds passed, I reappeared beside Airi, she opened her eyes and looked at me as if curious about what I just did.
"We can now rescue them."
"Eh? b-but what about the-"
She was about to ask about the slave traders but when she saw that there's only the little girl remaining in front of the now smashed door. She grew confused, but after a while, she shook of her confusion and cautiously approached the little girl.
I noticed this earlier, but this girls looked like she has fox ears and 7 tails. Is this something like a half-breed?
"A Black fox?" Said Airi in surprise.
"A black fox? what is that?" I asked.
"It's a tribe of beast people, living near the borders of the Toran empire, close to the demon continent. They are a tribe known for their skills in assassination. That's why they fetch high prices as slaves. This enslaving practice really needs to be destroyed."
After rescuing the little fox, I also went inside the house again to rescue the other children. I didn't let Airi inside since that's where I hid away the dead bodies of the slave traders, it's safe for the captives since they were blindfolded and they didn't see the heaps of corpses inside.
After successfully rescuing them, we bought them to the hospital to take care of their injuries. We also informed the knights of the matter and they attended to it instantly.
Airi and I were about to head back to the castle, when I felt the presence of the little black fox behind me. I turned around and saw her peeking at me from a corner.
"What is it?" I asked her as I walked over.
The little fox seems to be a little afraid of me because of what she saw earlier as she took a little step back.
"Don't worry, I mean no harm."
After a few seconds, she stepped closer and grabbed my clothes.
"M-Mister..P-Please teach me... how to be as strong as you!"
"You want to learn how to be strong? why?"
"I want to find my parents who were captured with me 3 years ago, if I become strong like you, then my chances of being able to rescue them would be high! Please!"
"I see, so your parents were also abducted huh... Hey, black fox tribe specializes in assassination, right?"
"Do you want me to assassinate someone? please tell me who, if that's what it would take for you to teach me!"
"No, I don't want you to kill somebody, hmmm... for now, wait here and recover, I will come back the day after tomorrow, and then we'll discuss about this further."
"Yes..."
After that she bowed to me and ran back to her room. The sight of her running back like a child looks cute. Perhaps sensing my thoughts, she turned around and pouted a little.
"What did you two talk about?" Asked Airi.
"Nothing much, the sun is about to set, shall we go back?"
"Yes!"
And with that, our short walk came to an end.
...
In the dark alleyway, inside the house where the children were held captive. There stood Heize and 6 more people as he examined the lifeless corpses of the slave traders in the ground.
"This art of assassination, the preciseness, and the way it killed these poor souls... Just what is he." Said Heize as he looked onto the direction of the castle.

Saga of the Jewels VOLUME ONE COMPLETE
Prefer to listen to rather than read Saga of the Jewels? I'm also releasing it as a free audibook serial podcast on iTunes here! Epic YA JRPG-influenced GameLit progression ensemble-cast steampunk romance fantasy! When Ryn’s hometown is destroyed, will he be able to gather together the twelve Primeval Jewels in order to defeat the evil Emperor and save the world of Mid? A fan novelization of an amazing Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist, that currently releases at least one chapter a month. Epic in that this will be very long. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint!” (-Kandaj) YA in that this should be enjoyable to~13-year-olds and upwards. Some gore, some swearing, some sex, but nothing more than PG-13. JRPG-influenced / GameLit in that it uses lots of JRPG tropes, particularly from Final Fantasy. I’ve read a lot of fan Final Fantasy novelisations and you can basically think of this as a fan novelisation of its own Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist as a game... Progression in that the characters level up over time (though not with visible litrpg stat boxes). They grow in ability through training and experience, gain new skills, individually and as a party (think Chrono Trigger) and spend time discussing and stratgeising about how to defeat their opponents. Main protagonist from book three would definitely be able to defeat himself from book one! Ensemble-cast because we've got quite the roster of misfits here. The first volume is all from the main protagonist's POV, but it starts dancing between his and different POVs thereafter. Steampunk in that we’ve also got airships, steam trains, pistols and ambiguous ‘amber bars’ that function a bit like artificial lights… Romance in that there is lots of shipping here, a few love triangles, and you may be kept guessing as to who will actually end up together... Fantasy in that we’re in a vaguely pre-modern setting. We’ve got swords, magic, dragons, dungeons, monsters, all that good stuff. * "This story captures that Final Fantasy quality perfectly. Kiddy but also grim. The characters are great... Severely underrated and needs more favorites/follows. I look forward to seeing how this story will unfold." -Gilgamesh9999 "Starting at the end and jumping backwards is not a writing style seen every day. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but you've executed a fairly crazy idea very skillfully so far. Overall, a strong start to what could be a very strong story." -RandomFF.netUser "You definitely have my interest piqued. It'll be interesting to see where the story goes... It definitely has an 'old school Final Fantasy' type feel to it, which I appreciate...Good job! I am glad you are going into more details about the story you laid out in the prologue...of course the big burning question is 'You know they lose in the the first chapter, so how will they end up winning?' That of course, is the story you're writing...so we'll see how it goes! #Following." -KyleQuicksilver (quotes are from reviews on other sites) * If you enjoy it, don’t forget to boost Saga of the Jewels on topwebfiction.com!
