TEN: OBLIVION II
YOU HAVE DIED
Something about the flashing red prompt snapped Lars’ dissipated mind back into action. Game of life!
Maybe this was all part of the game—part of Dungeon? Some glitch? Or what had Finn called it? A bug. Maybe it was just a bug? He focused—if that was the right word for what his formless self was doing—on the letters, trying to figure what in the hell had just happened. Finn said that loading into Dungeon was disorienting. Maybe this was just normal? Maybe Finn went through this every time he played Dungeon?
No way, he thought. No fucking way getting sucked into a virtual reality headset was in the neighborhood of normal.
Then suddenly the prompt changed:
YOU HAVE DIED
SQUEEZE RIGHT FIST TO EXIT CAMPAIGN
His consciousness melded back together with the new information. He almost felt like he… had a head or something. He tried to turn his head-like thing to get a proper look at the words, and to his surprise, it felt like something in his view shifted.
Okay! That definitely reads like something you’d find in a game! Now, we’re in business, Ogre!
Emboldened by the acquisition of his new head-like thing, Lars clenched his right fist as hard as he could. Nothing happened. He tried again and again. And again. Still nothing. Then he remembered that he had no damn body, which meant he had no damn fist to clench.
Shit! How the hell do I get out of this?! Finn? Finn, can you hear me?
He heard a faint echo of either his own voice or his own thoughts. He wasn't sure which. But he sure as hell didn't get a response from the kid.
Then the prompt changed again:
YOU HAVE DIED
SQUEEZE RIGHT FIST TO EXIT CAMPAIGN

OR
WAIT TO RESPAWN (20)
The numbers ticked down: 19… 18... 17…
Lars felt a sense or urgency permeate through his essence. Respawning can’t be bad, can it? I mean, obviously I want to exit. But this is a game. Shouldn’t I get, like, a menu or something once I’m in? I can just leave then. I hope.
16… 15… 14… 13....
Lars decided he didn’t want to risk it. He tried to clench his fist again, but harder this time. He strained with everything he had to will his fist into existence. And he surprised himself when he saw the faint outline of his hand form. He doubled his efforts, feeling all the strain in his head-like thing, like he was working out a particularly tough piece of yesterday’s sandwich.
The time continued to count down: 12… 11… 10… 9… 8… 7…
I’ve got it! It’s right there! He squeezed like his life depended on it.
6… 5… 4… 3… 2…
And... he farted.
Well, shit.
The timer hit zero, and a single green word replaced the flashing prompt:
RESPAWNING

City of Champions Online
Having found the tragic truth that an art degree is worth less than the paper it is printed on, Jacquelyn Jones is frustrated with her dead end work as a graphic designer for a marketing firm, finding new ways to try and convince people that this week's 50 cent off sale is actually worth driving to the store. She's tried other VRMMORPGs, but they've all been fantasy-based, with a couple sci-fi games thrown in. But she wants something more, something Super. Superhero VRMMOs have had a... subpar reception in the past, in part due to the fact that the nature of most MMOs makes for fairly unheroic tales. After the couple hundredth time blasting the same group of mooks from the same faction on the same street corner of the same city, using the same powerset as everyone else because you only have a few options, it is hard to think of yourself as a hero anymore. But then she heard about City of Champions Online. For the first time, a developer partnered with a tabletop RPG maker to use their system to create a VRMMORPG, and it was one of the systems designed to be used with superhero games! And despite the name, there was no getting stuck in the same city as all the other players. The game world was a detailed replica of the real world, down to having some of the same shops and restaurants in town. She could be whoever she wanted, whatever she wanted. Now, she just has to find a way to become the heroine she's always wanted to be.

"No one can see it, some can feel it, and only the few can use it. We belong to the few." Marith Merryfield felt anything but merry that morning. She found herself waiting for a delayed train on a deserted platform, in the freezing cold of the Dutch autumn. Just when the strangeness is making her consider turning around and going back home an empty train rolls into the station. For reasons unclear to this day she decides to get onboard. An unlikely, and quite impossible, train accident is about to hurtle her into a world she had always suspected existed. It was a dark and absurd place she had rejected and suppressed when she was young. Now she would need that dormant part of herself to survive. After a brief hospitalization she must choose between two continents and finds herself reluctantly boarding a plane to Oregon to be reunited with her shadows. She returns to the town she grew up in, which is where her father still lives and her childhood memories linger. By the end of the week the mysterious train accident turns out to be the least of her problems. Her life was never supposed to become this serious this fast. Through an improbable and unfortunate series of events she is soon introduced to a motley crew of characters that appear to be carrying the same struggles through life. They possess a familiar sense of inadequacy and insecurity. Marith realizes that for the first time in her life she has found herself a tribe, or, as they prefer to call it, a Chain. She is introduced to a world of Prophets, Runners and Mages led by an Oracle and a Watchmaker. Over the course of several weeks Marith learns that, together with her Chain, she is expected to save this fabric of reality, by fighting a mysterious and immortal creature and his aggressive pet. In order to have a chance at overcoming this force of nature she has to revisit the darkest and most desolate corners of her mind. ***** The total word count of the first 12 chapters amounts to about 85.000 words. The total word count of the first 30 chapters will amount to about 225.000 words. My chapters range, roughly, from 5.000 to 10.000 words. I post with irregular intervals, on random days and at different times. I hope you will enjoy the story! English is not my first language and I am very much open to constructive criticism. Disclaimer: I regularly use impressionistic or abstract language on purpuse, when I think it might benefit the story.

Koala knew the evils of the world, she had endured the worst it had to offer; she didn't think it would get worse, but fate proved her wrong - the love of her life, her partner in crime, had been brutally beaten at the Reverie - then sold into slavery by the Celestial Dragons. Now, Koala must overcome her trauma if she wants to get Sabo out before it's too late.*Basically, it's my theory for what happened at the Reverie, since Oda is intent on keeping us in suspense.Disclaimer: Not mine, I do not own One Piece.
