《Offworld》Explanation

After taking look at my system interface I smiled.
“Well it looks like I have attained the elemental seed of water.”
“The element of water huh? Well it is not the most destructive element or the rarest, but it is definitely the most versatile one.”
“So now that I have created my elemental seed, what is my next step?”
“You have to start absorbing raw elemental energy from nature to make your elemental seed sprout and the best way to do that is to start meditating.”
“And how do I do that, I don't have a meditation technique like you, or are you saying you’re going to share your meditation technique with me.”
“Unfortunately even if I wanted to share it with you it wouldn’t work. You have created an elemental seed of water and my meditation technique is of the earth element, so it wouldn’t work and even have some backlash.”
“So I just have to absorb elemental energy passively? Wouldn’t that be extremely slow and counterproductive?”
“You are entirely right in that conclusion, but...”
“But what?”
“From what I observed, your soul is now in a state of balance.
Usually when someone breaks their barrier and forms an elemental seed, their soul is at the most exhausted it can be and as a result when the soul barrier forms again the soul space is not enlarged by that much. In your case it’s entirely different, your soul was at its peak even after breaking the barrier making you extremely lucky.”
“Yeah, yeah and what's that got to do with me not having an elemental meditation technique?”
“You don’t need one.”
“But you just said...”
“Well in your case it’s entirely different.
Remember when I said you were lucky? I was just downplaying it really.

Normally when you break your barrier, it just comes back again in a short amount of time, enveloping your soul but this time it’s more malleable. Those that just completed seed formation don't usually have a tremendous boost to their soul but through meditation they raise it slowly until the new barrier can’t hold anymore soul force and it’s destroyed as well.
The way this happens is by absorbing raw elemental energy from the environment to feed your seed, so it can grow. When the seed grows and reaches the border of your soul and can’t grow any more it doesn’t stop but slowly and surely stretches the barrier surrounding your wall in turn giving you more soul force and also raising the rate of your elemental purification. The bigger your elemental tree is the faster you can purify the raw elemental energy and turn it into pure elemental energy that you are able to control and use.
With the state of your soul right now witch is at least 2 times bigger than before, even if you don’t have an elemental meditation technique and only just absorb passively you won’t be far behind someone who has one. Even if someone who has an elemental meditation technique can absorb raw elemental energy faster and grow his elemental seed faster they still waste a lot of time and energy to try to stretch their soul barrier.
You don’t have to do such a thing because your soul barrier is stretched to its limit, meaning you don't have to spend time to stretch it and only focus in growing your elemental seed.”
That was very good news, I didn't have an elemental meditation technique but the speed of my cultivation wouldn’t be slowed down one bit. I was happy but that wasn’t enough.

“Isn’t there any other way to increase my elemental absorption?”
“You are a greedy human being, aren’t you?”
I smiled.
“No, just a lazy one.”
“Well there is one way that definitely works. You just have to find a place where the elemental energy is more concentrated.
In this case because you’re elemental seed is of the water element I would recommend a river, lake, or even the sea.”
After the explanation from the monkey, I gave him what I promised and he went on his way.
I was very excited because I finally had stepped into the realm of impossibility.
That night I could hardly sleep thinking about all the ways I could use my new acquired power to fight my enemies in battle and win.

Only Villains Do That
While waiting on an Akihabara train platform one day, ordinary high schooler Yoshi Shinonome was suddenly plucked from his normal life in Japan and whisked away by a beautiful goddess to Ephemera, a world of magic and adventure, to serve as her Hero and drive back the evil Dark Lord. This is not his story. Standing nearby at the moment Yoshi was isekai'd was a man named Seiji - a rude, cranky, misanthropic musician who was not at all pleased to find himself also snatched up and transported to Ephemera by the goddess's wicked sister, Virya. According to this self-proclaimed Goddess of Evil, the whole fantasy adventure thing was a game she and her sister played to stave off the boredom of immortality, and since the good goddess, Sanora, had picked her Hero...well, Virya needed a Dark Lord. A grown man with his own career and ambitions, Seiji has no interest in playing. Unfortunately for him, the call to adventure was not a request. Now, he must conquer Ephemera and defeat the Hero...or Virya promises to make him beg for the release of death before granting it. Playing along for his own survival, Seiji nonetheless is under no illusions who his true enemy is, and it's not the naive young would-be Hero from his own world. Placed in an impossible position, Seiji must make enough progress toward world domination to keep his sadistic patron goddess off his back, but not so much that he can't strike an accord with the forces of Good and convince the Hero Yoshi that it's the goddesses who are their mutual enemy. Forced to embrace Evil without being too evil, Seiji walks the razor's edge, building his forces and biding his time till he can get revenge on the goddesses and be free of them, his only certainty that he will not be getting out of this with his hands clean. A Dark Lord's gotta do what a Dark Lord's gotta do. Updates Tuesday and Friday. Most Patreon tiers get to read one chapter in advance of the public release!

8 171After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery. 8 505The Epiphany Colony
Brad Asher has been a private detective on the Epiphany Colony orbiting Mars for about a year before stumbling into a conspiracy that threatens the safety and stability of the colony. Note that the story here is the first draft and has a lot of ideas, characters, and plotlines that I ended up dropping in the final version that I released here currently available on Kindle Unlimited. The entire second half was restructured, as I ended up not being satisfied with some of the things that I introduced and felt like it had strayed too far from my initial vision of a space-based detective noir story.
