《Dread Necromancer Of Glyphs》Chapter 7: First part of the test

In room 98 an annoying alarm starting going off. Orson tried to sleep with the alarm still on but it was simply too annoying to continue without putting it out.
Orson took the miniture alarm clock and put out the alarm. He groaned while thinking "It's great that I am finally at the academy but I will never get used to this annoying clock"
His father gifted him this alarm clock for the purpose of waking up early since he definitely didn't want to wake up too late in the academy. Although he hated working hard, he himself knew that he needed to work hard from now on, if he wanted to inherit the inheritence of his family. Becoming a mage was the first thing he needed to do.
His father couldn't become a mage becomes orson grandfather thought that magic was something for fools and those that would study magic rather than become a knight were a disgrace.
His father, just like himself had a completely different opinion of course but his father's chance at becoming a mage was already over. That's why he needed to work hard at the academy for his father to be proud of him!
Since he was only a youth, he desired to learn magic to elevate his family from only being a small noble faction.
This was his life's goal, he couldn't disgrace his father nor his ancestors by slacking off now!
With new motivation to get out of bed quickly, he quickly dressed himself while only noticing afterwards that his servant once again was nowhere to be seen.
His good mood soured again. He was hungry while his servant was gone again! Yesterday he already needed to make his own food after his useless servant fell asleep instantly after arriving at their shared dorm and now he is gone already?!
It wasn't even six in the morning! How could he be gone already?!
Rage raged inside him. Why did he even bring him along with him, if he didn't even do his masters chores?
"As if not doing my chores wasn't terrible enough, he has also so much magical talent that it makes me furious. Why does a mere servant of our family have so much talent? And what even were those two beasts inside the glassball back then?" Orson asked himself.
He faintly grinned "Maybe I can use this against him to slow down his progress here? If he does better than me here then I will be in trouble but since he has some kind of beastly parts within himself. Heh, a beast as a servant. How fitting."
He let out a small chuckle "Maybe that why elves are said to be talented? It is only fitting that they have been enslaved by us. Beasts belong in cages after all. Anyway, if I can ruin his reputation with this, I should be able to progress smoothly while he won't."
His mood was once again restored with him holding his head high up and saying "This is a plan worthy of the next inheriter of the chutwall family. How dare my servant make a better impression than me!"
The aco demon and the soul of Krenas began giving the imp more trouble since they heard that if he passes the test of the director, the director will give him some method to get rid of both of them.

If they worked together, they would've even be able to overwhelm the imp's organized defense tactics.
But for some reason they didn't, which was wonderful news for the imp.
Now about sixty percent of the imp's energy was used up. But the imp found some useful tricks. The battle between the souls was still on going but now more different than when he first was forced into this mortal body. First they actually fought but now he was like a barrier. He could reinforce parts of this barrier through merely concentrating.
Thus he was able to block off their attacks for so long. It was tiring but much better than losing control of his now only available body since he was killed off in hell.
With the corner of his left eye, he saw a few spells going off outside which mildly catched the interest of the imp.
He walked closer to the window and saw two mages fighting against each other, a mock fight. After a few seconds of watching them he walked away from the window.
The two mages that were fighting against each other were quite crude in their fighting style. They were simply throwing spells against each other. The spells that they fired off were semi impressive but nothing extraordinary. All in all a boring fight for the imp who has participated in harsh training in hell.
The halls were empty which wasn't unusual since he woke up very early. He wanted to see if some lessons were going on but to his dismay he couldn't find any. Yet just when he wanted to turn around and go back to his dorm, he suddenly saw the director casually walking up to his bureau.
With this good news, he rushed to the director and asked if he could attemt to the test again.
"Normally I would say no to such matters this early in the morning but we may aswell begin now that you are here"
The director agreed.
He opened the door to his bureau with his key and let the imp inside.
What the director did next startled the imp a little. The director conjured the cauldron from yesterday into existance.
The imp originally thought that cauldrons needed to be set up manually.
As if reading the imp's mind the director said "Don't be too suprised. Necromancers like me are hunted down by the smallest signs of necromantic activity, we don't have the luxury to set up our cauldrons in public spaces. Thus we need to use special cauldron conjuring glyphs to practice our art. It's quite a shame I know."
"If you don't mind me asking, why did you tell me about you being a necromancer?" asked the imp curiously.
The director turned around and gave the imp an unnerving smile "Because you are in an even worse situation than me. What do you think the templars will say to an imp running around freely in public?"
"Then why didn't you execute me on the spot? Aren't I endangering your position?"
"Because there was no reason to. Whether you follow the laws of this country or not isn't important to me. If you start up trouble in the kingdom then practioners of the forbidden arts like myself could gain some more freedom for an amount of time. For example smuggling would become easier."

"And if you go around and tell others that I am a necromancer, then no one will believe you anyway and I could simply use my connections to throw you in prison for slander. You simply aren't a threat of any way to me. And if you think that killing me would be something you could achieve then you are an incredibly big fool. I have survived countless attacks from mages in the past. A novice like you is nothing in my eyes." explained the director.
"That.. is true. Well then, may I begin forming the glyph then?"
The director nodded and pointed at the shelf. "Take the materials you need but remember that you only have four tries left."
The imp took everything he needed, sat down before the conjured cauldron and took a long, deep breath.
He then threw the rotten heart, the pale flower and the spiked leg inside. He actived his spell former glyph. Numerous threads flew into the cauldron. This time he knew the weak points of the spikes, hide and meat, so he dissolved them without real trouble.
Now came the bone of the creature. His threads carefully examined the bone's surface. He didn't want to make the mistake of yesterday of injuring the threads. Waiting another day to attempt the third attempt wasn't what he desired.
The bone felt quite rough but also sturdy. The imp rolled his eyes. Why couldn't atleast the bone be easy to dissolve?
Five minutes flew by, nothing. Another five minutes, nothing. Only after a whole of twenty minutes did he find one soft spot.
And he nearly missed it too! Contrary to expectation, bones of monsters were difficult to disassemble because often there were no easily noticable weak points. And to top it all of, bones of monsters were often thrice as hard as human bones.
It was difficult enough to disassemble human bones but monster bones? Difficult! Very difficult! At least for a beginner that is.
This weak point that the imp found was as small as a single thread of the spell former glyph!
This was unbelievable for the imp. How could something as difficult as this be the first half of the entire test?!
How hard would the second half be? It send shivers down his spine.
He shook off this unpleasant thought and concentrated on the only weak point that he found.
He carefully dissolved the weak point with a single thread. After that was done, he examined the inside of the bone.
When he found out that it was extremely soft and thus easy to dissolve, his eyes almost rolled themselves into the back of the head from the relief he felt.
From the inside out he disassembled the entire bone.
Next he chose to dissolve the rotten heart. It went suprisingly easy.
The pale flower on the other hand proved to be more.. dangerous.
Since the flower looked so brittle, the imp thought that it would be a good idea to only disassemble the flower with two threads, which proved to be an extremely wise decision, only not for the reason he did it for.
The stalk of the flower proved to be of not much of a challenge. The petals however were the exact opposite.
The moment the threads touched petals, the sickly looking petals began infecting the threads!
The imp, out of panic almost destroyed the petals. Thankfully, he didn't. The last thing he wanted was to disassemble these materials again. After half a minute he only managed to disassemble two petals out of five because the infection of the petals destroyed the two threads.
So, after another minute, he finally dissolved the last of the petals but in the process losing another three threads.
He directed two threads into each of his ears and tried to think as calmly as possible about the properties of the glyph.
He did this because he thought that necromancy would need that. After all, necromancy revolves around corpses and corpses are silent.
After thinking of the glyph's properties in a calm manner, he inserted the two threads into the cauldron.
The smoke rose to the two threads, circled around them and!-
Exploded.
The imp couldn't believe what happened there right now. What has he done wrong?!
"What have I done wrong there?"
"Who knows, it's your test. I can't help you" the director answered. He had a indifferent expression on his face but his eyes had a glint of satisfaction in them that the imp barely noticed.
This infuriated the young devil. Was this damn human satisfied by seeing him fail?! Hate surged up inside him but he supressed it.
He once again tried the forming of the glyph. He once again failed at the last stage.
The next time he attempted it, he was annoyed. He didn't know what he could do at the last stage and this damn human wasn't even giving him such vital, basic information!
How could this be in any way a fair test?! Hatred directed at the director surged up once again but this time he could only supress it for the most part. The feeling was still there.
At the last stage, he once again inserted two threads into his ears while being at the same time calm and hateful.
But this time when he expected failure, the smoke and the thoughts on the threads didn't explode but formed into the glyph.
The imp widened his eyes, feeling both suprised and joyful. The imp then calmed himself down a bit while thinking
"So that's what was missing! Hatred! Not only must one be as calm as a corpse but also as hateful as an undead!"
The director on the other hand wasn't happy at all.
"So he actually managed to do it? A shame, but this was only the first part of the test. The easier one. There is no way he will survive the second." the director thought.
