《Rise of the Forgotten》Ch. 23 Travel, Corruption, Combat, Excitement?

We arrived at the next planet. We were only a couple of days late because of the incident. Most of the governors were shocked when we showed up. The meeting took place whether they were shocked or not.
A couple of hours later and the meeting finished. We then left. I had become the Chief of Security after the last one couldn't keep up. It wasn't their fault but to keep Nadira safe she decided to place me in charge of the security.
Planet after planet we traveled to with no incident. I checked out the Silent Dawn member and found out that she and all of the traitors were under no outside influence. She was extremely hostile and zealous about what the Chosen has to say. I found out that she regularly attended The Chosen meetings and had heard the voice of one of the higher-ranking members. None of the initiates get to see the higher-ranked members. They only get to view the members above them. She told me that she only knew of the initial rank and the priest rank. Only if she proved herself and became a priest could she learn of the organization as a whole.
Thankfully, I had a buck of drugs that I could use to make her more susceptible to my questions. I also had to block the soul contract on her for a while. I then killed her, she was of no use to me now and was a security risk. This is why the Alphas left zealous governments alone, you couldn't get them to view past their religious views. Any time you tried they would view it as an attack on their beliefs and would become extremely hostile.
She also told me some of their chants.
'The Gods once sealed and hidden are now free. Sealed for too long though they are too weak and must be nourished. They sent the swarms, their creations, to find those worthy and speak their creator's word. We now must prepare for their arrival and welcome them. We must find those that sealed them and destroy them. We are The Chosen and those that stand in our way are heretics. The heretics must be purged.'
The Third might have unleashed these swarms on accident. Fuck. Now is not a good time for the Librarium to be hidden. 'Erendial, please have the Librarium show up.' I asked nicely, there was no answer. Well shit, there goes that plan. I didn't think it would work but I had to try.
At least I found out some things. Currently, it was useless to me but maybe handy down the line. No use in worrying about it now. All I can do is prepare and hope that the Librarium shows up soon.
-------
Six months have passed since The Silent Dawn did the thing. Since then there have been multiple attacks both in space and on the ground. All failed. We did have a close encounter once though. It was on an agricultural world. We were traveling back to the landing pad where my ship was at. We traveled along a road surrounded by vast plains of wheat and grain. While traveling they burst through the surrounding wheat and attacked themselves to the cars.

Once attached they took out bombs and placed them on the cars. Once done they distracted us by attacking the drivers. Thankfully, someone discovered the bombs before they blew up, though it was only shortly before they blew up. All of us jumped out of the vehicles and a few seconds later they blew. We then had no cover and faced a hail of lasers. We were prepared for such a situation as I gave everyone the equipment that I made.
As the attackers began firing the guards activated their shields. The shields projected themselves from an armband that is part of the armour. I asked them what they wanted their armour to look like as it didn't affect the actual capability of the armour. Their shields projected from their arm covered their body, fully protecting them. They then stood shoulder to shoulder in front taking the laser fire. Behind them, other guards planted rifles on their shoulders and pointed the barrels out of the shields firing back. Nadira was in the center of the formation with me with these knights surrounding us. We advanced together as a unit.
The shields would not fall as I made them use both UE and a small battery pack. Though small these battery packs could store huge amounts of energy, both UE and others. The enemy couldn't pierce the shields while we could pierce their amour. As we advanced we killed them. I also deployed a communication disruptor to help keep my tech safe. Once they were all dead we advanced on them and I searched for anything that could record or send images. They had none.
After the enemies were killed we then advanced to the ship. On the way, Aldion told me that they tried to sabotage the ship, Aldion killed them all. Once we boarded the ship we left the planet and continued on our way. We didn't bother telling the authorities what happened, they couldn't help.
Currently, we are mostly done with the mission. Only a few planets were left for us to go to and then we just had to travel straight to where the galactic senate building was built, the planet Gantaris. Once there Nadira would petition for more attention on the edge planets. My job would also be finished at that point.
Over the next month, we visited each planet and finished with all that we set out to do. Right now we were visiting the last planet we needed to. As we entered the system everything was calm. It wasn't until we made way to the planet that things got a little suspicious. We were told that the meeting place had been moved to the orbiting space station. We then contacted the subsection governor to ask if this was true, it was. We also asked why we weren't contacted about this change until now, they said it was a last-minute decision.

I had all of the guards go on high alert. I also had Aldion scan the station for anything suspicious, there wasn't anything for now. Having Aldion keep scanning I landed the ship in the docking bay they prepared. We then left the ship fully armed and walked to the meeting room. Once we got there they made the guards stay out of the room. Only me and the former captain, ironically named Arthur, accompanied Nadira.
Once we entered, the meeting started as usual. Nothing happened during most of the meeting, though some governors were highly suspicious. It wasn't until nearly the end of the meeting that something had happened. Some of the governors suddenly took out oxygen masks and put them on. The doors then sealed themselves. The rest of the governors then tried to question the governors with masks, to no avail. Aldion then told me the room was being vented.
"Nadira, Arthur, the room is being vented. Activate the life support system on your suit." I said. They nodded and activated their life support. Arthur's helmet sealed with the rest of the armour. Nadira had a necklace and circlet that then projected a shield around her head. The necklace and circlet both produced air and processed the carbon dioxide. This was through advanced technology and UE utilization. UE broke most of the rules and could produce things just from utilizing the UE the correct way.
Sadly while UE was present everywhere the amount of certain UE present depended on the location. Because of that the UE available that could produce oxygen or breathable air dwindled when the room was being vented. Nadira's accessories both contained very small batteries that could last for a couple of hours. Surprisingly, gemstones could contain varying amounts of UE within them making them very useful besides being nice to look at.
I then walked up to the sealed door and took out my pistol. I modified it for certain situations that I might encounter. I turned on the laser cutter on the pistol and started to open a small 7 cm wide hole in the door. Seeing this the governors with masks tried to stop or stall me. The other governors and Arthur stopped them. As soon as the hole was opened the governors started to calm down. I then started to cut open the door so that we could get out.
Through the hole, I could see that the guards were facing off some other guards. Our guards were each defending the three people wide corridors at an intersection up ahead. One of the masked governors moved their hand to grab something but was stunned by Arthur. Sadly, we couldn't easily kill governors even if they might be trying to kill us. Fucking politics. If someone did this type of stunt in the Empire they would be executed for treason.
Once I cut open the door I pushed it out to the hallway. I then had Arthur stun each of the masked governors. I asked the remaining people if they could keep an eye on them, they agreed. We then left the room and went to the guards. Once we arrived we saw that they weren't letting anyone through. After we arrived they let people through. We left for the ship soon after.
We arrived at the ship and were immediately fired upon. There were fifty enemies compared to our twenty, not including Nadira. We immediately got into formation, some of the guards did get hit but my armour wasn't going to get pierced that easily. Once in formation, we then moved to the ship. Some tried to get into melee range but were killed before they could get too close. Seeing the futility of getting us to stop they tried to disable the engines, they failed miserably.
Once we got three-quarters of the way to the ship they all started to rush to us. Facing the incoming attackers firing all the way, we stopped and increased fire at them. They dropped like flies. My blasters were way more powerful than anything available in the galaxy. Seeing this some of them picked up their fallen comrades and used them as body shields.
There were only seven of them left at that point. Once they started to get in melee range I got out of the formation and approached them. I then took the halberd that had its poll resting in a sleeve that had its space expanded. It usually rested on my back and had the poll hidden making it look like an ax head with a pointy tip. Now though it looked like a proper halberd, it had a 2.4-meter poll with a crescent-shaped blade toward the end. A spearhead was at the end. The halberd was decorated with runes that the Empire had developed to channel UE to make it adopt certain properties. The UE could also make the weapon sharper, sturdier, more flexible, and lighter. The halberd was made of black metal and had gemstones inlaid in the poll. The poll was wrapped in leather from a beast called Grasdir, a large and dangerous beast that had a hard leather. The leather was dark brown.
Once the halberd was fully out and in my hands, I let a viscous grin appear on my face. The attacker paused seeing it, they were afraid. I then launched toward them.

Dungeon Scholar
Girl meets dungeon. What could go right? A story of a good-hearted Scholar driven by her compassion and curiosity. She might be a little combat averse, but um, isn't that only logical? Love me a good grimdark, but sometimes I want to read feel-good fiction that isn't pure action, romance, or comedy. The plot and characters of Dungeon Scholar won't be all happy and fluffy, and the world will be more dungeons and monsters than rainbows and puppies, but overall the sweet moments should overshadow the bitter. Let's say three dollops of sugar for every pinch of salt, with lemon slices left on the saucers? Enjoy. Note: This is NOT a typical dungeon story. If you are here for the dungeon aspect, then fair warning this will seem incredibly slow-burn to you. The dungeon will eventually become the most important 'character,' arguably, or the second-most important narratively, but you might jump out the window in frustration long before that happens. At its heart, the story's core remains 'girl meets dungeon,' not 'dungeon meets world.' (To be clear, this does or will have a plot! It's just the more conventional story-like elements contribute to Rowena Loress's greater story, not the other way around; no conflict takes center stage until it becomes personally significant to her. Meanwhile, have some Slice of Life.) Updates every Friday Cover made using Waifulabs Written using 4thewords (referral code: UZJRY55368)

Twice Lived
Previously called Standard Reincarnation Story In a fraction of a moment, the Earth was no more. The planet was destroyed, and billions and billions of people were dead. And it was all an accident. This is the story of Elm. A regular American born once on earth and given a chance to be reborn again on a planet with magic and monsters and dungeons. Except that for Elm, this is far from the idealistic reincarnation into a loving family -- the standard story of a child raised by loving parents who teach him the ways of the world, Instead, Elm is born into a family of inquisitors. An order of nobility that is dedicated to hunting down and killing "Twice-Lived" -- the name society has for people like Elm who are reincarnated with all their memories of their past life intact. Disclaimer This story is: 1) Extremely violent and graphic. 2) Still in a rough draft stage. I see what I am writing more like a synopsis than a fully fledged story. I periodically will go back to flesh out earlier chapters, build characters, etc... If you find the words "Show don't tell," comforting accept that unfortunately, I'm not at that stage of the writing process yet. 3) At one point this story was called "Standard Reincarnation Story," and I had written an extremely off-putting description of the story. This was mostly to keep out people who would just read the silly first few chapters then rage quit as soon as the violent stuff got started. Since I just had my first .5 star rating (without a page read count increase) that technique is not working, so I might as well treat this as a regular fiction and try to get regular readers.
