《Rise of the Forgotten》Ch.17 The Job

"I need you to guard and escort my daughter across the galaxy. Now you may be curious as to why I want you to escort her and I'm going to need you to sign a soul contract if you want answers." He told me a basic, very basic, overview of what he wanted. He also made me very curious about the why. I also couldn't comprehend why he needed me, he should have a security force for these types of things.
"Show me the contract. I'm not going to sign something if I don't know what it says." Soul contracts can be very dangerous, the ones they might be using might not be too dangerous to me but I won't take the chance. At least until I know what it says.
He laid down a small pile of paper in front of me. I started to read it. Basically I couldn't tell anyone about the info I was going to be told should I sign the contract. It also listed a bunch of possibilities about when I could speak about the info. It is quite comprehensive. After rereading it a couple of times, making sure there were no hidden conditions, and reviewing it with the other Alphas and legal personnel in my soul, I then signed the contract. The contract paper is made out of a soul tree that could influence the soul and the ink was made out of its sap and written by a professional contract maker. As soon as I finished signing it, by using a pen that used soul energy to write, I could feel the contracts presence and restrictions placed upon my soul.
"I'm glad you decided to sign the contract, this will make protecting my daughter so much easier for you. Now I will tell you information only known by the Senator and the President." His tone took a grave tone. His face serious, the room fell silent as he paused. I could feel the guard behind him send out his UE senses, making sure no one would hear what was about to be told.

"A couple of decades ago while the Federation was out searching for new life outside of the Big Three's galaxies, the expedition that we sent out arrived at a galaxy that had no stray communication coming through it like radio waves and the like. Curious about the silence we sent an expedition to see what was going on. After all if there is a possibility of danger we have the duty to check it out."
"But I digress. When the expedition arrived they went to the closest habitable planet. When they arrived they found a desolated planet. They found an entire civilization seemingly destroyed. They quickly left the planet and reported back. They were ordered to constantly report back on the situation and continue to investigate. A few weeks later after finding multiple ruined planets they found what we call now the Crimson Swarm. The name says what they looked like. The swarm was extremely hostile and intelligent. It spoke to the expedition before whipping them out."
He then took out a speaker and played what sounded like thousands of voices played over each other saying the same thing. "Submit and become one with us. Resist and die. We will come so prepare for our arrival. Should you resist you shall be sustunise for the Gods." It stopped playing.
"This recording was known to only a few people before someone copied it and started an organization called The Chosen. They believe that we should surrender to the swarm and that doing so we will achieve apotheosis. Though not as popular as other organizations they do have a small following. Over the years they have tried and failed to get the people's support. Some more fanatical followers have tried killing some politicians. Those that succeeded claimed that they did so by the will of the gods. We don't know if they are actually part of the main Chosen group or just fanatical splinters." He took a deep breath.

"They have mostly been silenced and suppressed whenever they emerge and their appearances don't show up on the system's main hub. Any other streaming of viewing platforms immediately take down any and all videos of them. Because of this they aren't well known to the majority of the people and we would like to keep it that way."
I spoke up when he paused to take another breath. "I don't get the point of telling me this." From what he's told me the group appears to be relatively peaceful except from their more fanatical followers.
He leaned forward and put his arms on his legs with his hands held together. "Sorry I'll get to the main point then. They mostly target the people most against them. I am one of those people. My daughter is leaving this planet to go on a tour around the galaxy to talk to the people of various planets. She herself is trying to become a politician and is going around to see if she can find anything that needs to be brought to the Senate's attention, while also gaining the support of the people for when she runs for a governmental office. I believe that either through order of their mysterious leader or through their own want that the Chosen will try to attack her to show me a lesson of some sort."
"While she's on this tour around the galaxy I want you to escort her ship and her person. There are other escorts that will be there but I want you to be her main escort. You are the only one that I believe couldn't be a part of The Chosen. While the Federation believes that they are a small group this is only a conjecture. We don't know the full scope of their organization nor who their leading figures are. Personally I believe that they are a dangerous group with an unseen reach. It may seem paranoid but I believe that anyone can be part of The Chosen. So will you accept the assignment?" He sat back crossed his legs and spread his arms on the back of the couch.
This seemed like a potentially dangerous assignment. I either got involved and protected a random woman from a potentially very dangerous cult like organization. Or I could stay out and go along with my days doing random jobs and waiting for information about the Librarium to show up. Ahhh who am I kidding, you and I both know I am going to accept it. Would be very entertaining if I didn't now would it.
"Sure I'll accept it. Sounds like fun. So when am I going to meet her." I had an excited smile on my face. While keeping me busy, my days so far haven't really been all that exciting. This on the other hand sounded very exciting on the off chance of something actually happening, plus I could make some connections with a person in a high place. "Now let's decide what my pay will be."

Every sailor knows the tale of Davy Jones' Locker. That place drowned sailors are sent to, ever resting on sea's bed. Some tales recount of a ghostly ship, the Flying Dutchman. Many a story has spawned from these two tales. Countless retellings mixing in their own fictions. But all stories spawn with a kernel of truth to them, and the story of Davy Jones is no exception. Those who've met the legendary seaman and his ghostly ship might call him a ferryman, escorting the drowned to their respective afterlives. Others might call him a devil, meting punishment on those deserving. The true story is always slightly different. Davy Jones is a ferryman, but not one for the afterlife, as Walter finds out. No, Davy Jones manages those who die at sea while in debt, and Walter died with a lot of debt. Unable to pay, Davy puts Walter to work. The specter has just the job for the dead college graduate. Another god, Sod, needs an afterlife for his new world. Davy tasks Walter with the job. Suddenly, Walter finds himself having to run a fledgling underworld with little instruction from Sod.
