《Amauga: Far From Any Semblance of Modern Civilization》033: Missing Home

After dinner, Rowan and I are led back to our suite in the Shining Dove. It’s late, so we’re preparing to go to bed.
“Mautgrass seems like quite a good product to sell,” I state, “if you like, Mittens and I can help you with starting a Mautgrass business. I even have some ideas on how to cultivate them here, but those will have to wait until we finish our pilgrimage.”
“I’m happy for the offer…” Rowan reluctantly answers.
“You don’t need to hold back. Unlike making stuff from thin air, flying barely takes any energy. Besides, you should act on the hints they’re giving you.”
“Hints? Oh, right. So they were giving me hints on what do stock… You’re quite good at picking up these things. You get along with almost everyone.”
“You think so? Back at home, I don’t get along that well with people my age. I still don’t know why.”
“You don’t? I think that’s quite hard to imagine. You’re such an obliging person…”
“I have my guesses, but what do you really think about gaining new family members?”
“I like the thought of it, but they are still like strangers to me. Finn and Rory seem easier to talk to. But with Grace and Cian, I mean, father, it’s kind of hard to forget they are the royal couple.”
“I don’t know how it is. I assume it will take some time. If you ever need someone to talk about it, I’m here. I appreciate you wanting to stand on your own feet, but let me take care of you if you need it.”
“Thanks, there’s just… Nell and Granny…”
“What about them?”
“They’ve raised me, they will always be my family. I don’t want to lose them. Can I really accept Rory and everyone?”

“I think you can. Just keep everyone you love close to your heart.”
Mother… it’s not like we haven’t seen us for longer than usual, but somehow I miss you…

“If it’s true it’s just the effect of the tea, I don’t need to officially adopt Rowan…”
“Cian, dear, I have already agreed to it. Besides, he is a fine boy and I have taken a liking to him. Adopting him would give him and his betrothed the protection of the royal family. And there’s the matter of Cyril, too: he’s more or less glued to Rowan. If you don’t do it, it will create problems for everybody in the long run. And you don’t want to be breaking your word to Aster this soon? Loyalty goes both ways.”
“Speaking of Cyril, where is he?”
“He’s still with Rowan. As I said, he is more or less glued to him.”

Suddenly, Cyril jumps towards me.
“Oh, Cyril! You startled me!”
He climbs on my head and starts petting me with his stubby paws.
“I thought you didn’t like me, Cyril. Thanks for cheering me up.”
“Cheering you up? What’s the matter”
“My mind wandered for a bit. I was just thinking about my mother… I didn’t think I’d miss her this fast… It’s quite usual for me to see her for months…”
“We’re here for you.”
“I know…”
We move to bed. Cyril curls up between us.
“Say, why did you think Cyril didn’t like you?” Rowan asks.
“He was staring me at all day,” I answer, “as if he was seeing me as prey or an enemy.”
“I think he was just checking you out. He’s never seen someone like you.”
“How do you know?”
“I don’t know, it’s just a feeling. Just by looking at him, I think I know how he feels.”
Is that an empathic connection?
“You should prepare some place in the Speeding Kitten for our new companion”, Mittens adds.
“New companion?” I ask.
“It doesn’t look like Cyril is willing to part with Rowan,” Mittens explains.

My Sister is the Grim Reaper
Benimaru always wanted a sister, and he loved Charlie more than anything. However, she has her quirks like the weird boundaries she has or lack thereof. She was extravagant, an open book, and lost on some social conventions that seemed pretty standard. The book closes when it comes to what Charlie does for a living, a topic she avoids like the plague. It seems time-consuming and dangerous, but Benimaru learned not to question it too much, largely because he had other things to worry about.Graduating community college, getting into Vermillion University with his best friend Aaron, and reminding everyone that he and Aaron are JUST best friends and have been for a long time.Aaron providing fan service to the girls in town doesn’t help their cause. Benimaru doesn’t understand why Aaron feels the need to tease him and the fangirls like that, but maybe it’ll all settle down when they move in with Charlie and start a new chapter in their lives at Vermillion University... Right?

Recruit - An Infinite Labyrinth prequel
A prequel to The Infinite Labyrinth. The year is 1816. The British Empire is in full swing, under the auspices of King George III. The Infinite Labyrinth has been pouring out its product from beyond our reality and fostered a new industrial revolution. Times are changing, and the people of London are feeling the winds of the revolution while British Professionals push into the Labyrinth. The newly formed Artefact Hunting Company is looking for recruits, and they have new technology to help them. From the slums of London, they aim to recruit a new wave of Professionals. And make Zacharias and the Earl of Carnavon lots of money. So, for Rowan Rivers and a handful of lucky ones, it's time to head into the Labyrinth, and discover what makes it different from England. And what makes THEM different? Recruit is a bunch of chapters I wrote to create to the setting, mood, and game systems of the Infinite Labyrinth. It is NOT a complete story in the classic sense. It's more of a slice of life view of early days of a normal Professional from the Infinite Labyrinth, and it's heavy on info-dump. It's 90% canon - there's probably a bit of a difference between how some characters and common behaviour are portrayed here and how they'll come out in the main story. Set two years before the events that kick-start the main series, it features some of the secondary/peripheral characters of the Infinite Labyrinth and will tell you all about the basic mechanics of the Labyrinth's RPG system. It can be considered a spoiler, as the characters in the Infinite Labyrinth are going to need to figure out all that, on their own. But if you like a much deeper exposition in the mechanics, here it is. The entire prequel is about 80 pages long.

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.

Squid Game Preferences
Some preferences from Netflix's current hottest show. I try to stick their personalities as close to canon.
