《Angel | ✓》53 - I Don't Need Protecting

Keisha and Chris watched on in horror as they saw their friend falls limp onto the floor. Her wing leant on unnaturally and bent oddly, not that she would've felt it.

The two guards that used to have her in grasp reinstated that and dragged her out of the room, her head rolling to the side as she's brought out of the room, Nala gasping as she is dragged unconscious.

Leila walks out of the room too, not daring to say a word to anyone, anger spread on every inch of her face.

Chris holds Keisha's shoulders firmly as she tries to run after Valentina. She cries and yells at the policeman who walks off without a flinch or a fault in his evil smile that seemed to be glued on his face. Nala nodded to the superior officer as he strutted past her, leaving the trio alone.

Nala looks at the two who looked flabbergasted, but they soon recovered as they realised that there was still someone there. They bowed their heads to hide their sadness, but she'd already seen it.

"A girl like her doesn't deserve what's happening to her." Nala said lowly making the two look up in surprise.

"She doesn't." Keisha chuckles dryly and it was silent.

The air was getting thick with tension as they stared at each other, not knowing what to say because both knew something was brewing until Nala turned and closed the door.

"So, what are we going to do about that?"

My head was poundings. It made me groan as I opened my eyes. The thoughts of what happened slash through my mind, and I get off my bed but fall to the floor from my weakness. I roll from my front to back, my vision was blurry, and the ceiling swayed for minutes until it finally stabled and I could get up without falling to my knees.

I try to move my hands around and help myself balance, but they're chained behind my back with thick metal, and I'm unable to break it off. No doubt the cause of that officer.

That bastard.

The only decency he had was to unchain my wings.

Head still throbbing, I look at my surroundings and see that I'm still in my cell except there's no more rag that was my so-called blanket and the small window allowing me to see outside my door was blocked off so there was no way for me to communicate with the outside.

I scoff to myself and pace around the room restlessly. Now I was awake from the sedative, my body was bursting with adrenaline, and I knew where to focus is. Stopping my pace, I turn to the metal door and as the blood pulses through my veins, my wings spread from my body wildly as I charge for the door.

It dents a little but that wasn't enough to satisfy me. I run at the door over and over, eventually making a large dent in the middle and tilting it off its hinges. My breaths were heavy, and they filled my ears and I inhale and exhale deeply.

The wind fills them as I charge repetitively but I stop as I hear something from the other side of the door.

There were grunts being yelled out and there were two heaved breaths. I stare at the door with confusion as there is a loud gunshot that sounded through the hallway before a body is dropped to the floor with a crash.

I step back as something goes into the door handle and removes all the locks and the door swings open.

I close my eyes tightly to race for impact of the intruder, but it goes silent as the door bangs to the side, the only thing to be heard was the heavy breath of before but it seemed to have softened.

Squinting my eyes open slightly, they instantly shot open at the glance of the man in front of me. He stepped forward to hug me aggressively.

My eyes close with relief, knowing that I still have a chance to get out and once he lets me free of the embrace, I turn so he can unlock my handcuffs.

"What are you doing here Xavier?" I ask quietly, not daring to wake up the sleeping prisoners as if the gunshot hadn't been enough.

With a click and the metal sliding off my skin I pulled away from him and I could see the excitement dancing in Xavier's eyes for doing it.

"To break you out, why else?" He says in an obvious tone as he turns around and leads me out of my imprisonment and into the empty hallway.

To get out, I had to step over a corpse that oozed blood from the wound in his chest.

I store at him. Not feeling fear or anything of the sort.

I look up to Xavier and see that he had stopped and was looking back at me with confusion.

"Was it really necessary to kill him?" I utter quietly, but not reacting when he shrugged his shoulders, the used gun still in hand.

"My job is to protect you at all costs, and I did." He stated and continues to walk, so do I.

"I don't need protecting." I protest "Prom night for example."

He chuckles loudly as we turn and walk down the gloomy hallway, making sure to dodge the looming sounds of talking around the corner.

"And look where you ended up."

I sigh, knowing there wasn't any point arguing and stepped in front of Xavier, taking the lead, and making my mind drain as I focus on hearing and everything then became enhanced, letting me hear my own heartbeat along with Xavier's behind me, both getting faster and we picked up the pace and went into a run, out feet still silent along the ground as we dodge loud voices and cut around corners.

Creeping up the hall, I could hear a laughter that drowned out every other sound of anything else. It was that bastard. A smile crept upon lips as I turned my head and slowly walked to the room it was coming from. The quiet pleads of Xavier became irrelevant.

The door was creaked open, and I peeked through it to see he was alone, sitting in the chair of his office that made him face his back to the door. He seemed to be on call with someone. I go to step forward but before I could a hand grabs my wrist

"What?" I scowl, suddenly coming back to my senses as I turn to see Xavier with a serious expression.

"If you want to escape, we need to leave now." He says but I ignore him, instead pulling the gun out of his pocket and twirling it in my finger.

"I want to get revenge first."

He stares at me for a while, assessing whether he should allow me, but he knew he couldn't control me, nobody could after I let loose.

"Quickly." He whispers desperately and I nod.

The man had ended his call and was now twirling in his chair aimlessly, but he stops as he sees me in the hallway, the looming shadow of Xavier over me.

His eyes widen and his instant move is to try and call someone on his phone, but I lift the gun up lazily and shoot the device from his hand.

The shot was silent.

He was helpless now.

I laugh to myself quietly and I get closer to him, until I can put my hands on each of the handles of his seat, trapping him.

"Let's have some fun."

It had only taken a few minutes, and now I had a beautiful sight of a helpless boy quivering boy in front of me. A white cloth was stuffed into his mouth as his arms were strapped to the chair tightly with ropes, blistering his skin as he squirms more.

I watch him with glee as I stop circling the gun on the desk, I sat on in front him.

"I have to make this quick." I say to him in a sad tone, and I could hear Xavier chuckle softly behind me.

"But that doesn't mean it won't hurt."

Before he could react, I put the head of the gun to his thigh, gripping the trigger tightly, making the sound those muffled screams of his pool my ears.

I look at him and dig into my conscious again.

Searching for something, anything.

But there was no remorse, only joy for the revenge.

"You deserve a long... painful.... death-" I start but stop and tilt my head.

"Come to think of it, I never got your name." Finally, I put the gun down and wander around the desk, until I saw his name in a metal piece, I pick it up and pronounce it loudly.

"Justin Rogers." I announce and he cringes, from the pain and his name dangling on my lips. I put the metal bar down and look up to make eye contact, immediately doing so.

"I'll remember that." I say with a sweet smile and his eyes widen in horror. "And you're going to regret the day you set me up!" I howl with laughter, and I could even see Xavier hiding his smile from behind me.

I could hear Francis's crazy in my voice as I laugh harder, and I could feel my restraints on the burdens inside me loosen even more.

I get a metal ink pen from his collection and stab it into his shoulder, and he shakes with pain, trying to scream for help, but that only made me push harder, until he fell unconscious, the pain being too much.

Leaning back, I hear the door squeaks behind me, and I fling around and freeze.

I make eye contact with her, and then him.

It's tense but I finally relax my shoulders and scrubs face with my hands.

"What are you guys doing here?"

"Coming to break you out, but I see you already have." Chris said briskly and looked around the room, flinching as his eyes land on the bloody man behind me. Now that I looked at Chris and Xavier, they had the same build, except Xavier was giving more of a death glare making Chris fumble in his words a little.

"Who-"

"Chris meet Xavier" I say with a sweet smile as I look back at Xavier to see him scowling at the two making them cower and me, to frown. "Calm down big guy, we can trust them." I say seriously and he glances at me briefly before backing down, nodding slightly.

As I push myself off the desk and walking over to Keisha with a worried expression and leaning from one foot to another. "We need to go now Val, Nala has prepared a car for us at back, but we need to get quick" Urgency covered her voice and I came back to reality and nod, making her sigh with relief and grabbing my hand to lead me to the exit, Xavier tailing behind me protectively, still not trusting the couple.

We crept down the hallway silently, only hearing each other's breaths and once we were out, we all exhaled briskly.

We had come to the dumpster outback, almost deserted expect for a few old police cars.

Keisha and Chris said we had to wait for the car, and I could feel Xavier looming over me as if I were going to get shot at any moment. I sigh heavily and turn to him, not phasing him in the slightest.

"How are you sure that we can trust them." he hisses deeply but all I do is stare at him and cross my arms. I don't bother saying anything and look away and rub my hands together from the cold weather.

The guard stares holes in the back of my head and eventually stops and pulls out his phone from his blazer.

"Forget it, I'm calling a car." he scoffs, obviously irritated that I'm not listening to him like I always used to. "Were going back to the mansion." What?

"What!?" I snap out loud, making the pair in front of us flinch behind me flinch from the aggression, but Xavier remains unaffected. He stares down at me as soon as his finishes texting to see my scowl. "What do you mean 'the mansion'! We're not going to get Francis?"

"No, you're leaving. The mansion needs their Queen, Valentina, and that's you."

"And they also need their leader!" I retort, the anger rising in me.

I see something flash in his eyes, but it disappears too soon for me to analysis it.

"The gang can't handle anymore losses." He tries to say seriously but his voice cracks and his hair seems to cover in face in shame. I watch as my anger dies down to guilt and I gulp.

I step closer to him and put my hand on his shoulder, making him look up at me.

"If you go, you're putting everyone's safety in danger." He says weakly.

"I have to do this." I say, clenching my fists together. "I won't leave him again."

Before Xavier could protests, I turned to Keisha, giving her a hug, nodding to Chris before stepping away from the group and spreading my wings.

As I lift of the ground, I slice through the fog of the night and as I leave, I could hear the faint voice of Nala, sounding worried and Xavier yelling for me to come back as I pursue through the night, drifting into a state of dream was I watch the night light of the city that I used to do so freely before, but know, it was time for me to return to my old life.

I hover over the city, narrowing my eyes to scope out the hospitals remembering the reporter at the hospital. The gun that I had slipped from Xavier's pocket twisted in my hand and I hear the riot that continues in front of the hospital.

I perch on the building opposite from the hospital and watch the fiasco. Some policemen and security workers are trying to restrict them from coming in, but they keep shouting out threats and cries of hatred for Francis.

Deciding to ignore it, I hope from building to building, making a circle of the hospital's surroundings before spotting a door opening and a nurse coming out of it.

She seemed dazed and leant against a tree located next to the building and I take this as a chance. I jump from the building and land silently on the opposite side of the tree before creeping around the edge of her vision.

The nurse turns around franticly and looks as if she's about to say yell as she sees but I cover her mouth with my hand before she could respond. "I just need you to cooperate with me." I order with dark eyes, and I could feel her gulp against my grasp but nods with sweat trickling from her forehead.

I walk into the establishment and its surprisingly quieter than it was outsider.

Nurses and doctors are casually walking past me, oblivious to who I was as I was dressed in the nurse's clothes from earlier, and she got my overalls instead, I already knew that someone like her wouldn't dare walk to the media about this. But it seemed that who I bumped two was a high prioritised nurse since I wasn't stopped when I walked into the emergency ward, not that anyone noticed since everyone was franticly running their errands, plus I was wearing a mask to shield half my face.

However, there was one place that everyone would avoid, or walk slowly as they walked past it. As I arrived at the hallway, it was silent except for the security guard that seemed to be guarding a door.

The signs couldn't be more obvious.

I hid my smile with a blank face as I walked to the door, only to be stopped by a rough hand and I face the said security guard.

"You're not allowed to enter this room ma'am." he said strictly but I shook my head and crossed my arms

"I understand that you're doing your job, but I have to do mine, so please move aside unless you wanted to get fired." I say boldly and his eyes widen as he takes a glance at my badge and steps aside nervously.

"Y-yes, I'm sorry, I hadn't realised." I nod stiffly and enter the room, closing the door behind me quietly, and then looking around the room.

It was empty, even though there were many other beds, none of them were occupied, probably from fear of the criminal. There were counters next to him that were lined with sedatives and some with vales of blood and I scrunch my nose in disgust, knowing what they were doing. I take them and shove them in my pocket for later, after I face my fears, turning to the unconscious criminal.

He was laid on his bed, his wings curled under his body uncomfortably and surrounded by wires, my fists curling at the sight. Francis's body was covered in bandages, they were loose and looked as if they hadn't been touched for days, like the rest of the room. His eyes were closed softly, but he didn't move as I laid my hands on his chest.

"Hello Francis."

Tears swell in my eyes as I crouch over him, leaning my elbows on the bed whilst burying my head in my hands to block the tears that were now streaming out.

"I-I'm sorry." I cried, my voice cracking as he remained still. "If- if I had stayed, listened to what you had to say, this would've never happened."

Looking up for a moment, I look at his face. His lips were slightly parted, but his eyes didn't move; my cries fill the room.

My voice became dry as I turn away from him, even if he wasn't awake, I couldn't bare say it looking at him

"I love you." I said with a smile.

My voice turned quiet as I hung my head lowly, letting tears pool the floor.

"You love me?"
