《Angel | ✓》5 - Why?

It's been a week being the psychiatrist for Francis and it hasn't been that bad. My neck had healed quite well, and the bruise was coloured yellow, making it unnoticeable, but I was more pleased with the progress with Francis.
We'd gotten along and had friendly conversations whilst I wrote things down collecting data. And recently, since he hasn't tried anything scandalous, that they know of, Mrs Carol has downgraded him from his strait jacket to just handcuffs.
And people are always weary once the changes were complete because when you have a straitjacket, it's very hard to hurt someone, but with cuffs, it can be much more serious. But I trusted him not to do anything, and he hasn't.
I knew that today I was going to give him a diagnosis. And I don't know what brought me to it, but I wanted him to completely trust me, just as I do for him.
"I need the key Chris," I ordered, putting my hand out as he stood there dumbfound and a slightly angry glint in his eyes arising.
"Why in hell would you need the keys, Val!" he yelled, fury evident in his voice.
"Please Chris, I just need the keys for his wing cuffs, nothing else, not even his handcuffs! I know he won't try anything,"
"And how do you know that! He's a cold-blooded, manipulative murderer and he can't be changed, Valentina," he stated which just made me scoff. Anyone could change, even me.
"Chris, please. I always have the emergency button on me if he tries anything. So, if he tried to do something, I'll just press it and you'll come in to stop the scene," I pleaded. "Please,"
I looked into his eyes with sadness, and he just sighed.
"You know I can't resist your annoyingness," he groaned and scrubbed his eyes, digging in his pockets. Then presented me with a small pair of two keys, making me smile.
"Thank you so much!" I squealed, making him chuckle stiffly under his breath. "See you soon!" Walking away and clutching the keys in my hand, as if it was going to disappear any second.
Today's going to be great! I smiled to myself.
I was writing down notes in my booklet before there was a loud beep and my head snapped to the door to see a very grumpy Chris and neutral Francis. As I smiled them over, Francis plopped into his seat whilst Chris stormed out, without a word and I let out a sigh.
"What was that all about?" Francis questioned with an arrogant smile, staring at me intently like he always did. Not sure why he did but I guess it couldn't be helped and besides, I didn't mind. His hazel eyes, with yellow rises, looked beautiful, even with the walls of ice in them.
I sighed and then responded, "Well he wasn't very happy about the surprise I'm going to give you."
He tilted his head in confusion but shrugged and continued to listen to me.
"But before that, I'm going to have to give you a final diagnosis, since I've found one and need to let you know" I announced.
"Final diagnoses?" he questioned still confused
"Yes." I started "As a psychologist, we try to see if you have any mental or physical illnesses to see if it can be helped and also just make yourself aware of it. It can help sometimes, and I have made one discovery." I finished looking up at him. I was a tiny bit nervous to confront him, but I convinced myself to be otherwise.

"You have Bipolar I Disorder," I said slowly, trying not to aggravate him.
He looked up from the piece of paper I passed him that had information on it but all he did was scrunch up his face, making me laugh lightly. "And this is important why?" he scoffs the paper crumpling in his grasp.
"So that you can get treated for it." He's still lost so I decided to simplify it for him.
"So, over the weeks I have been observing your behaviour and have concluded that you have Bipolar disorder. In a simple summary, you can have a sudden change in emotion from happy to angry to sad, or energetic to sluggish. Anything of the sort. Also, there may be depressive or manic episodes. Sometimes without intention, they would stay a lot." I said mumbling the last part and I heard a chuckle from the other side, and I looked up to see Francis smiling which made my face turn red in an instant.
"Can't help looking, Angel. Your smile's too memorising" he said in a low chuckle making me look away with red cheeks once again. Why is this happening to me?
"My name is Dr Rider," I said sternly but all he did was snicker more
I let a deep breath in and out and got up out of my seat making Francis flinch as I started walking over to him.
"What are you doing," he said in a low voice, almost making me back away. Almost.
"I'm just giving you your surprise," I said with a smile, but he still seemed unsure as I got closer to him.
I slowed down as I got closer to him and came to a stop as I was next to his wings, which I had admired from afar for so long that it was amazing to see this close.
I had never been this close to him until now and it felt right.
"What are you doing," he hissed, his eyes wandering all over me to see what I was doing, but I ignored him and tenderly took the locks to his wings in my hand as I unlocked it with the revealed key.
As I did the first one it clanked loose and fell to the floor and I could feel Francis tense, his body becoming still as stone. As I slowly walked to the other side and did the other wing, the chain fell to the floor with a CLANG!
I backed away from him and stood at his side waiting for him to react. His head was hung low, and the strands of his black hair covered his face, but he remains.
The room stayed like that for a minute in silence and I started getting worried. Then suddenly he started moving his wings and they raised so that they were spread out and up slightly. And the span was at least
"Francis-" I stared saying until I was suddenly pulled back and pinned onto a wall, in the matter of a few seconds.
I gasped for air in surprise and my eyes shot open to see Francis with a dark scowl on his face as his hands clam around my throat, the metal of the handcuffs pushing against my skin as well.
I wince at the pressure on my near-healed bruise throat but remain looking Francis in the eye. He was furious, the frost on his face melting with anger.

"WHY?!" he screamed, his voice echoing around the room.
His hold tightens on me and my eyes water as I run out of oxygen faster.
I thin my lips and continue to look at him. He was doing this as a defensive action, doing this to reject other feelings arising. As my hands were by my side. I could feel the emergency button in my pocket nudging against my hand, and I could've pressed it at any second, but I didn't.
I didn't want to.
I was running out of breath quickly, but I had to hold on. For him.
I stared at him softly and his face deflates from anger, giving to his other emotions. He looked confused and angry and then in a moment, he did something that I didn't expect.
He hugged me.
The pressure on my neck was relieved and his trapped hands put them to his side and leaned forward and onto me, head rested into the crane of my shoulder, the warmth radiating off him and onto my body
I stood there. Frozen in surprise until I finally reacted. I hugged in back.
"Everyone deserves a second chance," I muttered sadly and I felt his body loosen, and he folded his wings so that they were tucked behind his back, showing he was okay. Making me smile.
"Even you" I whispered.
After a minute of silence and hugging each other he tore it apart and looked away from my gaze. I knew it was just because he probably wasn't used to hugs, I didn't mind.
As I approached him again slowly, I could see that he was tense, and I wondered on the spot what I should say.
"So!" I started and he turned around to look at me. "Would you like to get back to the session?"
He nodded and went to sit on his seat, and I sat on the other. I smiled at him showing that everything was okay, he gave me a little grin which took me aback.
I had never seen him smile so genuinely before, without a smug or sarcastic hint before. It made me feel at ease.
I continued about the previous conversation.
"Any more questions about this topic?" I asked, and he took a moment to answer but did.
"How do you manage it? Do you deal with it over time? Pills-"
"No pills!" I said quickly. Nearly too quickly. He looked up at me with a raised eyebrow and I put down the truth.
"I just think that therapy is the best option!" I explained but I could see that he was still sceptical.
"So, I could schedule some extra sessions to deal with that whilst these sessions would be to deal with your overall problems," I said, overlooking my schedule to see if I had free periods and sure enough, I did!
"Sounds great, Angel" Francis thanked me with a smirk, making me sigh. I was enjoying a courteous Francis
"Dr Rider to you." I correct it as the timer went with a loud beep.
As Chris went into the room I could see he was expecting something bad to be seen, and when he didn't see anything, he relaxed.
"Get up, kid" he demanded as he picked up the chains from the floor and started to put them on his wings. But stopped as Francis turned his head to Chris, in a way so that I couldn't see his, he must've mouthed something or made a face enough to make the guard be quiet and chain him without another.
As the pair walked out once again, Francis looked back at me, a thing he did on multiple occasions.
As I gave him a raised eyebrow as if to say, 'What did you do?'
He smirked back to say, 'Not telling,'
The door slammed behind them, and I let out another breathily sigh walking back to my distant desk to a cabinet, pulling out a key to unlock it. Picking the container up and picking one from inside, swallowing it.
Two more wouldn't hurt today.
And with that I gulped down more and walked out of the office, feeling a bit more ready for the rest of the day.
As walking through the hall, I heard my name being called and I turned around to see that it was my boss once again.
"Dr Rider! Hello!" she said hurrying as quick as she could in her high heels. I smiled at her as I walked toward her too.
"Hi, Mrs Carol!" I chirped and without missing a beat she started to explain the situation that was going on with the prison.
"Okay, so I need to cut to the chase. Fast.
The best scientists in the state said that they would pay big bucks to have Francis Whitelock tested and examined!" she exclaimed with a grin, but that made my blood run cold. "They will be coming here tomorrow afternoon to see if they want to take him or not. But if they do, we will be rich, this prison will be rich!"
She was going to sell Francis off to scientists.
After I had just gained most of Francis's trust and now it was going to be ruined by this money-blind woman. I needed to think of something fast.
"W-well can I come and see?" I said, trying not to sound suspicious. As the gleam of greediness in her eyes fades away and she looks straight at me with curious eyes but agrees with my question.
"Sure, why not! And I have to warn you, Valentina. If you can't make any more progress in the next few days, I'm afraid that I'm going to have to sell him off, we're supposed to be 'turning him to the good side.'"
You're not 'afraid' at all. I thought as she turned around made another phone call and then walked off with her heels clacking on the floor.
What should I do? I can't let him down now, but why was I even thinking that? He's a patient. Just a patient to me. But he was still human, partly at least. I couldn't let him fall back into his old life, he trusted me not to allow it.
As I strutted out of the office I made a promise to myself.
To make sure that he wouldn't be hurt.
