《Cookies & Cuffs》IX | "The family business,"

"It's never me," I say, leaning back against the couch, "they never choose me, do-do I do something wrong?" I was asking more so myself than the person beside me.

"No one ever chooses me," I repeat, "mum and Tyler left, because- honestly who knows with them. Dad choose his job to escape, he hardly comes home, and now," I didn't even bother finishing the sentence.

"He promised, he'll be back," Joe comments, I don't turn to look at him, but if I had to guess he's probably looking at me with a look of pity.

My eyes glued on the ceiling I continue, "it's been 6 months and not even a peek from him, it's almost like my time with Cayden was just my imagination. Maybe, my loneliness finally got to me and I imagined myself, one crazy family,"

I hear Joe huff from beside me, "you're crazy, but I don't think you've lost your mind yet. And he did say he chooses you, you just need to wait but if you don't want to, you don't have to, you're allowed to move on,"

I nod, "yeah, but I don't want to just yet," I'm gonna hold onto the idea of home just a little longer.

.

.

"Cayden get off, I'm hot," I said, trying to shake off a very sleepy Cayden of me, he was also sleeping on my hair, one wrong move and it's over.

"Damn right you are," he mumbled, his voice deep with sleep, but he doesn't move his face from my neck, instead just tightened his arms around me.

"Cayden," I warned, he grumbled but still gets off me and back onto his own pillows, finally allowing me to move my hair out the way, instead of getting up I smile and jump forward to wrap my arms around Caydens back.

"Oh, now she wants to cuddle," he mumbled, causing me to smile.

I slowly woke up, my hands hovering over the cold and empty right side, sighing heavily I got up to start my day l, falling back into my old repetitive routine.

Waking up alone, having breakfast alone, going to work and coming back to an empty house, eating alone and going to bed alone. The difference this time was that memories of Cayden clung to each step. I had unconsciously found myself cooking for two, announcing my presence when I got home or just seeking out Cayden.

After finishing up my routine and practising my smile in the mirror, I head out.

Upon arriving to work I was greeted by the usual face and the only sign of Cayden I got,

"Hey, Lucas," I smile. He turned up 3 months after Cayden left, saying he made his choice and wants to start new, apparently Cayden had spoken to him and cleared a lot of things out. He also was the only way I knew that Cayden was still alive, keeping me updating as to where he was.

He smiles back, holding his hand up, "morning. Someone called in and we've got a big order, Lauren's in the back already starting,"

I nod, thanking him and joining Lauren in the back after putting my stuff away.

"Geez, that's a lot, are they planning on opening a bakery or something," I comment once I notice the order, closing today and just focusing on this order won't even affect the business, in fact, it'd make more for the day.

The boxes kept piling the corner as we juggled the order and regular customers, who even orders this much?

Lucas pops his head into the back to inform us, "guys, the customer called, said he'd be here in an hour to pick up the order,"

We were almost done anyways, just a few more boxes to go.

After exactly an hour, Lucas walked into the back to let us know that the customer was here to pick up his order, so we all picked up as much as boxes we can and walked out.

"He's by the car," Lucas informs, we followed closely behind him, my arms starting to shake, maybe I should've stuck to 5 boxes instead of 7.

We stopped by an old jeep where a guy stood with his back to us on the phone, the sound of our footsteps must've alerted him as he quickly turns around, slotting his phone in his back pocket.

I gasp as I stare at him, but quickly recovering and just sticking to a polite smile.

The guy gave us a side smile, "Hey, sorry for all the trouble, we can start from the back," he leads us back to the boot, boxes slowly filling up his car until the final 2 boxes were put down on the front seat.

I was trying my best not to be distracted by the peeking tattoo on his neck, a tattoo I had become very familiar with.

We walked back inside, this time the guy following us in and stopping at the desk,

"That'll be £1,000, please," I say, who even buys this much worth of treats...?

No matter how hard I tried, my eyes kept wandering to the tattoo, the words on the tip of my tongue yet stuck in my throat.

The man pulls out cash from the inside jacket pocket and places it on the desk, he looks up at me with a smile, as I take the money to count it.

"There's a $500 extra," placing the extra cashback on the desk and putting the correct money in the register.

I hear the guy sigh as he takes the money but instead of putting taking it back he places it inside the tip jar, "that was a big order and you guys also put it the car, you deserve it," he turns around and was about to leave when I finally decide to say something,

"Wait-sorry, I didn't quite catch your name," I awkwardly say, knowing damn well that's not what I wanted to say.

The guy raises a brow at me as he smiles, please don't say, you didn't trow it, "it's Raphael,"

"Oh...Well, thank you, Raphael," I smile at him, I can't do it.

He nods and turns around to leave but not before, "just helping the family business,"

The family, what now...?

.

.

"For me? But I didn't order anything," I say, staring down at the box in my arms,

"Its got your name and address," Nessa points out, "thought I'd keep it for you, saves you the trip to the post office,"

I nod and thank her, going back inside my house, strange...

Placing the box down on the table, to impatient to grab scissors, I use the keys in my pocket to open the box up.

What if it's a head...? Okay dumb suggestions, but I mean maybe someone sent it to scary Cayden?

I slowly peek into the box, so far no weird smells.

I decided to just rip the band-aid off, quick opening the flap, "Oh," it's... It's a pan and spatula?

"I'll buy you new pan and spatula..."

First that guy in the bakery and now this, could this mean...That he's finally coming back?

What on earth is going on?

.

.

Damn it I knew I should've just got my car, this is what I get for wanting to walk, but I was helping an orphanage? Why is this happening to me?

I thought since it's Sunday and the bakery is closed, I might as well make use of my sad day and make some cookies for the orphanage close by.

But what do I get instead? Walking back home in the rain.

There was literally no point of me putting my hand over my head, but I was still doing it as I ran, trying my best to ignore the way my clothes were starting to stick up me.

Suddenly a thought struck me, causing me to pause, it's almost like when you're trying to sleep but your brain keeps replaying your embarrassing moments for no reason.

It was raining the day Cayden left me.

It was raining the day after mum and Tyler left.

It was raining the day dad left.

Well, that concludes that I hate rain.

I was about to continue my depressing walk back home when I noticed a dark figure on the other end of the road with a black umbrella in above their head.

Maybe I'm finally leaving today.

I was about to cross the road when the figure started walking towards me and suddenly it seemed impossible to cross the road, where did so many cars come from?

I turn around, waiting for my chance to cross the road, from the corner of my eye I would see the figure getting close.

Finally, the cars calm downed and I was about to step forward when suddenly the rain stopped, I could no longer feel the cold drops. Huh?

I feel the tip of my head and slowly looking up, causing me to gasp once I notice the random umbrella above my head, I step forward but before I could move towards the oncoming car, a hand wraps around my arm turning me around and into their embrace.

My heart at this point was a rock band, the cold nervous sweat on my back almost paralysing me.

God please not yet.

The person pulls away, giving me a clear image of their face, the dim street light shining down his face.

I stare at him, not realising that it was no longer just raindrops on my face, tears naturally rolled down as a sad smile made way onto my face.

"Cayden?" I breathed, "You're back,"

He smiles, holding the umbrella above my head, "Melody,"

I'm not 100% satisfied with this chapter but honestly I can't seem to think of anything else, I may change it but I'll let you guys know if I do |
