《Living with the Player》Chapter 17

I've never fought anyone in my life. Not a real fight. Sure, I hit Nico on the arm from time to time but he's Nico. I punch lightly for him and, if anything, he probably likes the pain.

But I'm just saying, if a bitch comes at me sideways, I don't know how long it'll take for me to break. I don't have high patience when it comes to how people talk to me and right now, it's being tested to the max.

Kenzie Fitz is making a huge scene at the back of the school. There's no way people just came here. She had to have called them. If I wasn't one of the people being filmed right now, I would probably be laughing my head off at the stupidity of it all.

Still, she stands, towering over me, in a public place where teenagers feed off of stupid drama like this.

"You need to stay away from my man! He chose ME, okay? He doesn't want a girl like you who is getting passed around by Theo, Nico, and Jonah, got it?"

Wait. Who the hell is Jonah? My mind searches for this "Jonah" that she's talking about as she yells at me, pointing her finger in my face. Nope, I don't think I know any Jonahs.

She's still rambling when I interrupt her. "I don't care if he chose you. I don't want a guy to choose me. If there's other 'choices,' he can have them."

Damn. And to think that Kenzie and I used to play with Barbie dolls together in first grade. I honestly feel bad for her. I have insecurities but this is another level.

"Then why are you all up in his phone? Huh?" she yells.

"I literally haven't talked to him on the phone since I found you two in bed together while he and I were dating. And I know you knew that we were together so don't act like you're innocent."

Her face turns smug as she crosses her arms. "Yeah, and that's why I convinced him to leave you for me. An upgrade."

I blink, speechless. Is she PROUD of herself right now?

"What? You can't say anything? You think a new haircut and hoeing around is gonna make Brian want you back? At least face me and own your shit," she spews.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Brian just sitting there. I bet he's enjoying this: Kenzie and Jennie fighting for Big Ole Brian. What a joke.

"What do you want from me?" I ask. People are filming and I'm not trying to lose my chance at colleges for this. "You want Brian? You can have him."

"I want-"

"YOU HOMEWRECKER!" My eyes shoot open in terror as Samaya comes running into the lunchroom, staring straight at Kenzie. Oh no. "Get away from my friend, you snake! I swear I'm gonna-"

Three people lurch forward to grab Samaya as she starts clawing at Kenzie. Samaya is slim, light as a feather, and I doubt she has the heart to throw a punch, but right now she's glaring at Kenzie like she's going to mess her up.

I want to die.

"Oh you want some?! OH YOU WANT SOME?!" Kenzie threatens. People start chanting at us. Samaya escapes and I have to run forward to hold her back.

"Let's handle this in private ladies, shall we?" I say, still carrying a wild Samaya. Kenzie ignores this and picks up her iced coffee. She takes a sip as if she's some athlete about to enter the boxing ring. "Kenzie, can we just-"

Before I can finish talking, she leans forward and spits the coffee in my face. In the midst of my shock, she comes forward, cocks her arm back, and swings at me.

Oh, hell no.

I practically toss Samaya to the side and lunge at Kenzie, throwing punches. I'm small but I'm strong and I get a few good hits in. We tussle and she's obviously planned this because her fingers are loaded with rings while mine are bare. Her fist gets me on the forehead, cutting me, and my anger skyrockets.

Somehow, I get on top of her and I'm trying to pin her down to stop her punches when someone lifts me up and throws me over their shoulder.

People boo as I'm being carried away. Kenzie screams at me from the floor. "That's right, bitch! You don't want this!"

"Let me down!" I shout, hitting Nico's back. "Nico, I swear if you don't let me down right now-"

"We're going home, Jennie," he growls.

He picks up the pace and the last thing I'm able to do is give Kenzie the finger as he lifts me out to the parking lot, tossing me in the car, taking my lanyard, and driving with the doors locked so that I can't hop out.

The entire car ride home, I'm fuming. There's coffee spit all over my white shirt and my fists are clenched.

He parks in my driveway, opens the door for me, and urges me to walk inside. If I make a run for it, I can probably make it back to school but she'll probably be gone by then.

"Let's go in," he says. I give him a look, annoyed. When I don't move, his face darkens and he tightens his jaw. A storm brews in his eyes. "I said, get inside."

Begrudgingly, I start to step inside, and he points to the couch. "Sit down," he says. I sit, pissed off, as he disappears.

Nico comes out with a towel and a first-aid kit, hands me a water bottle, and kneels in front of me. He brushes the damp towel over my face to clean the coffee before taking out antibacterial ointment and a band-aid.

"You idiot," he mumbles, shaking his head, as he applies the ointment to my forehead where she cut me.

My eyes flash. "Idiot? She came at me first. Did you expect me to just sit there and take it?"

"I expected you to be safe," he snaps back in a tone I've never heard before.

"I was FINE. If you hadn't interrupted, I would've had her ass."

He shakes his head. "She came prepared. You didn't."

I roll my eyes. "Whatever, Nico."

His voice stays frustratingly calm. "It's not worth it. People were recording-"

"I know! But she needs to be put in her place! Why couldn't you have just let me be?"

"Because I don't want you to get hurt!"

I go silent. Our eyes lock for a second before he turns his attention back to my forehead. My face starts to heat up as he blows on it carefully and then puts a band-aid over the cut.

"She deserved it," I say simply as he begins to clean up.

"Yeah," he agrees. "But you don't need to fight her to beat her."

I purse my lips. In my head, I add her to my revenge list next to Brian.

Nico stares at me, smirking slightly.

"What?" I say.

He smiles, shaking his head, looking up at me. "I think I could spend 100 years with you and you'd still manage to surprise me."

Honestly, it shouldn't mean that much. There are so many other things that guys will say: you're different, you're special... But I can recognize an honest compliment when I receive one.
