《Save My Hope》36 | Anxious

I feel Phoebe freeze under me, making me worried that I did something wrong. But when I pull away, I quickly understand it's something the person on the other line of the phone said to her. Phoebe doesn't say anything; she stares into my chest. That's when I notice she isn't breathing. I bend down slightly to catch her eyes, snapping her out of this.

Phoebe lets her hand fall with the phone in her hand and takes a small step back. She looks panicked and terrified; I don't like seeing her like this.

"Phoebe?" I say, and she looks around the apartment. "Phoebe, what happened?"

"He-he made bail," Phoebe whispers, breathing unsteadily. I can't believe what I just heard, how can they let that man make bail. Where did a druggy like him get a large sum of money? I don't understand.

"Phoebe. It's okay." I quickly say, trying to calm her, but it's not working. Phoebe looks around the apartment, puts her hand on her chest and walks away from me. I follow her as she enters our room and starts to pace slightly. She is now gripping her chest harder, making me more worried. Last night, her heart wasn't going back into sinus rhythm. I had to stay up until finally, it did.

Phoebe sits on the edge of the bed, breathing heavy and almost clawing at her chest. I need to calm her before this gets even worse.

"Phoebe put your head in between your knees." I rush to her side, putting my hand on her shoulder. She looks up at me like I'm crazy, "Just do it." I state, and she does as I say, "You're having an anxiety attack. Just close your eyes and take long deep breaths okay?" I crouch down in front of her sitting on the floor, and after a few minutes, she looks up. When she looks into my eyes and water is filling in them. I know she is scared, and I understand why.

"Baby-"

"I'm okay." Phoebe finally says, making me come closer to her. Practically in between her knees. "I'm okay." She repeats, and this time it sounded like she was trying to convince herself. Phoebe puts her hand back over her chest and lets out a long sigh.

"Are you sure?" I put my hand around her wrist, feeling her heartbeat, and it's still beating fast. Phoebe tries to move her wrist out of my hold, but I grip it slightly.

"Noah. I said I'm okay." She stands up, pulling her wrist from my hand. I get off the floor, watching her as she limps out of the room. I want to follow her, but I know she needs her space. I sigh, running my hands through my hair.

So many questions are flowing through my head. But one thing is for sure; I promised her that I wouldn't let anything happen to her and I won't break that promise.

I leave the room, seeing Phoebe standing by the window. She is looking down at the street, and she never fails to look beautiful. I walk up behind her and wrap my arms around her. This makes her jump slightly, but when Phoebe realises it is me, she relaxes into me and wraps her hands over mine. I kiss the side of her head as she rests her head on my chest.

"Everything will be okay," I whisper, kissing her head again. "I won't let anything happen to you," I speak into her hair, and I feel her take in a deep breath.

"I know," Phoebe says, wrapping my arms tighter around her. I don't want to hurt her, but she wouldn't be doing this if it hurt her. "I'm sorry." She whispers, making my eyebrows knit together. "You shouldn't be going through this with me." Phoebe turns around, my arms still around her, now on her hips. "I shouldn't have let you convince me to..."

"Phoebe." I stop her, "I don't want to be anywhere else. You're never alone. Never again." I kiss her on her forehead, bringing her into a hug.

I hear the bedroom door open, and we both look over to see the twins leaving the room. They give us an uncomfortable look, so Phoebe steps away fixing herself.

"Hey, girls! What's up?" Phoebe clears her throat, limping to the couch and sitting down.

"Should you be walking on your ankle, Pheebs?" McKinley asks, looking directly at me.

"No. No, she shouldn't." I chuckle, "But since you're finally sitting down, let's put some ice on it." I walk into the kitchen, open the freezer and grab a bag of frozen peas. I open the drawer next to the sink and grab a dish towel and wrap the bag of vegetables.

"It doesn't hurt anymore. I'm fine," Phoebe says as I walk over and her sisters sit down next to her. I grab her leg, pushing the coffee table, so her ankle rests on it. I sit down on the table, and Phoebe watches as I unwrap her ankle. The twins turn on the TV and start flipping through the channels.

"Can you hand me a pillow?" I ask, and McKenna hands me a couch pillow. I grab it placing it under Phoebe's ankle. It's not bruised, and the swelling is not bad, so maybe it is just a sprain. I stand up, putting the frozen vegetables on her ankle. She winces slightly at the coldness but quickly adjusts to it. "Just relax today." I smile, at her, and she nods her head. I sit down on the other couch as McKinley picks a movie.

Throughout the movie, I take the bag of vegetables from her ankle and put them back into the freezer. As I am walking back, I look over at Phoebe, and I notice she is cold. So I grab the blanket from the couch and place it over her. She smiles at me, and I sit back down. As the movie is finishing the twins are now asleep.

"Pheebs," I say, trying not to wake them. Phoebe looks at me then at the girls. She smiles, sitting up and placing the blanket over the twins.

"I'm going to make dinner tonight, so if you want to relax." Phoebe stands up, wincing at her ankle. I go to help her, but she holds her hand out. "I'm okay." She smiles, limping into the kitchen. I stand up, wander into the kitchen and wait to see if she needs me to help. She turns around smiling and biting her lip slightly. "I will make dinner, and you can do your work." She has a point; I have a pile of papers that need to get done.

"Just making sure." I smile, walk into our bedroom and stare at the pile of paperwork on the desk. I sit down, crack my fingers and get to work. After what feels like hours, Phoebe knocks on the door and comes in instantly making me smile and decompress.

"Hey, dinner's done. The girls are already eating." Phoebe smiles, making me beam.

"I will be right out." I look at the paperwork then back at her. She nods her head and leaves the room by closing the door behind her.

I place my pen, where I stopped and stood up. I stretch, feeling my back pop, and I sigh in relief. I swear I spend 50% of my time doing paperwork and 30% actually with my patient. I leave the room, seeing Phoebe and her sisters at the table. I walk closer to the table, and Phoebe has laid out my plate as well as my drink. I sit down at the table, smiling at her and dig in.

Once we finish dinner, the twins go back into their room, and Phoebe starts to clean up the table. I don't ask if she needs help. Instead, I do. I grab the twins plates before she can and scrape off the leftovers.

"Dinner was delicious." I start, trying to start a conversation. I want to know what's going through her mind. What is she thinking?

"Thank you." She replies as she starts washing the dishes. I grab the plates after she cleans them, dry them off and place them into the cabinets. After we are finished, I see Phoebe get a bit uncomfortable for a second and walk away from me. What was that? She walks into our room, and I stop myself from following her.

I look down at my watch and set a mental timer to wait ten minutes before going into my room. A few minutes pass and Phoebe exits the room and enters the bathroom. The shower turns on, and I decide to stay out here. I clean up the kitchen a bit and straighten up the living room. As I am folding the blanket Phoebe was using; she leaves the bathroom in a robe and a towel in her hair. She looks over at me, pulls her bathrobe tighter and enters our room.

I give her enough time to get dressed and enter the room. When I open the door, Phoebe is holding her shirt up, examining her surgical scar. When she notices me, she quickly pulls her shirt down and clears her throat.

"I am just grabbing clothes to change into," I state, opening the drawer and grabbing clothes to change into after the shower. Phoebe nods her head, moving the blanket down the bed and crawls into it. I leave the room and shower. After, I go into our room quietly, not wanting to wake her. I am wearing my sweatpants and a white shirt. Usually, I don't wear a shirt to bed, but I don't want to alarm her for not wearing one. I move the covers and crawl into bed, falling asleep to the sound of Phoebe breathing.
