《Save My Hope》08 | Concerned

When I get to the Nurses Station, I see two male cops standing in their uniforms. I walk up to them, telling them who I am.

"You were the Doctor on the scene?" The one cop asks, pulling out his pen and paper.

"Yes, I am Miss. Marshall's neighbour." I put my hands into my scrub pants.

"Can you tell us what you heard and saw?"

I am about to tell them when but I see something red flash on the screen above the Nurses station; I read the room number, and it's Phoebe's room. I race to her hospital room, almost knocking down a Nurse on the way. I slam open the door seeing Phoebe standing out of bed, holding onto the surgical site. Our eyes meet-

I see Phoebe's green eyes looking behind me, and instantly her eyes fill with fear. She quickly reaches for something off the Nurses cart- A syringe filled with epinephrine.

"Phoebe. Woah-" I put my hands up in the air as she points the syringe at me. I watch her fear-stricken eyes roam around me.

I hold up my arm as I hear a couple of Nurses piling into the doorway. Everyone needs to back off- I take a couple of steps towards her trying to get her to focus on me and only me. She is absolutely terrified-

Her breathing is ragged, and I bet she is tachycardic. She should not be standing up, only hours after her surgery- I need to get this under control...

"Phoebe." I calmly say, making her eyes meet mine. "Hey. It's okay." I nod my head, taking a small step towards her. "Phoebe- he will never hurt you again," I tell her truthfully, but her eyes fill up with tears as she shakes her head back and forth.

"He will kill me." Her voice breaks, looking around the room. "I- I can't. Please." She is begging now as she looks at the cops than at me. Her hands are shaking in fear. I can't stand to see her like this-

"I won't let him near you," I say, reaching out towards me her. Inches away from getting the syringe, but she points it right at me, her hand not shaking anymore. I moved my arm away just in time and look directly into her eyes. "I promise you." I never promise anything, but I can promise this. I want to hold her close to me and show her I mean every word I say.

The nurses inch closer, and I hear a voice shout Code White through the hallway. Nurses look back and forth from her and me, as they wait for my say-so to go after her. I watch Phoebe's face contort in pain, groaning. She grabs her surgical site, hissing. I look down quickly at her gown, and I see blood soaking through it.

"Phoebe, give me the syringe. You opened your surgical site..." I say calmly, as she looks down at her gown. I watch in slow motion as the syringe falls out of her hand, and her body starts to collapse. I catch her before she can cause any more damage to her body.

We hook her up to the machines as I move her gown up and try to control the bleeding. She tore out three stitches, making me shake my head in disbelief.

How far did she think she would go? She can barely hold herself up! Someone would have stopped her eventually... And I know where she lives...

The nurses put her into a new Hospital gown and inject a smaller dose of Morphine into her IV. Before the nurse left, she grabs me a suture kit and takes out the cart. Now since she tried to harm herself, or harm me, she will have to be watched closely. I put the nasal cannula's back in her nose, making her stats climb rapidly.

I made the cops leave while we were getting Phoebe situated. I don't need her freaking out again. A nurse comes back with a sterile pan and a suture kit. I pull the stool closer to her and put on a pair of gloves. Phoebe refused to look at me; she is looking up at the ceiling and brooding. She is breathing quite heavy and refusing to look at me.

"I know you're afraid," I whisper, stitching the site closed again. "But I promise you. I won't let him do this to you again." I look up at her face, seeing a tear fall down her cheek.

As a medic and as a Doctor, I have seen many people crying and scared. But, when it comes to her, I feel like my heart is breaking. She moves her head, looks away from me and puts her hand up to hide her face from me.

"Should I call your family?" I ask, making her look at me.

"Absolutely not!" She says, giving me a serious look. Her eyes are red from crying.

"Okay." I nod, putting fresh gauze on her stitches and taping it to her skin.

"I don't need my mother flying over here and bringing the paparazzi with her." She looks back out the window, as I stand up and disregard the used supplies.

"Tell me more about yourself; I wanna know more about Phoebe Marshall," I say, confused at why I just said that. I haven't been with a woman in almost ten years. I am a 34-year-old man, and I don't know how to act around a woman I like. How embarrassing is that? Wait, do I like her? This is so confusing...

I sit down in the recliner chair, and I almost sigh in relief. After Phoebe's surgery, we moved her into this private room. I was worried and stressed out I actually fell asleep watching her monitor. I rest my head to the cushion on the chair, looking at her caved in cheekbones.

This makes her look at me, confusion on her face as she takes in a slow deep breath. "What do you want to know?" She finally says, adjusting herself in the bed trying to get comfortable.

"Anything- Everything." I smile, making her smirk for a second. "Let's start with your full name."

"Well, my full name is Phoebe Elizabeth Jane Marshall." I raise my eyebrows, "I know- it's long." She grins and asks, "What's yours?"

"Noah James McGuire." I am named after my good for nothing, Father. I wanted to say, but I don't. She doesn't need to know about all my past just yet.

"Shouldn't you be working?" She asks suddenly, trying to get comfortable in the bed.

"You want me to leave so you can try and escape again?" I joke, looking into her green eyes, but she gives me a stern look. Dammit-

"I don't want to be here!" She shouts, trying to sit up to make her point go across. "I didn't ask to be here!" It sounds like she is directing that comment directly to me. I know she is scared of whoever did this to her, but she can't take it out on anyone but him. She needs to be strong and stand up against him-

"Phoebe lay down." I sit up, gently pushing her shoulders onto the bed. She clutches my hand suddenly, making me look at her hand in mine.

"Please, Noah." She begs squeezes my hand tighter, making me shake my head.

"I can't," I place her hand back onto the bed and head towards the door. "Nurse." I grab the attention of a Nurse in light blue scrubs, "Tell the police Miss Marshall is ready for them." I whisper, walking back to her side. She looks at me disoriented, squeezing her thigh.

"Come on in, officers," I say, as I hear a knock on the door. Phoebe's monitors start beeping faster- "Phoebe, it's okay." I quickly tell her, as the officers who are now women enter her room.

"Hello, Ma'am," They say, looking at a nervous Phoebe. "I'm Officer Hudges, and this is Officer Lane. We just want to know what happened." The short blonde says, pulling out a pen and paper from her waist.

I look down at Phoebe, and she is now biting the inside of her lip and squeezing the sheets harder. I look at the monitor- she is Tachycardic, and her blood pressure is high. She needs to calm down... I do the first thing that popped into my head- I sit on her bed, grabbing her hand tightly.

"I-I" She gasps, not sure where to say.

"Just breathe." I look at her, "Slow deep breaths" I give her a small smile, squeezing her hand in reassurance.

"Miss. Marshall, we aren't here to upset you. We-"

"Nothing happened-" Phoebe quickly says.

"Phoebe-" I look at her in shock, not sure what is happening in that head of hers.

"Miss Marshall, I know you are scared. But whoever did this to you will do it again unless you tell us the truth." Officer Lane states.

"I- he- he will kill me." Phoebe's voice is now shaking with fear, as she looks around the room.

"We will have officers watch over you." The blonde says, "He won't be able to even look at you." Officer Hudges convinces her.

"Phoebe." I whisper, "Look at me." Her green eyes look into mine; they're filled with fear and doubt. "I promised you," I say, grabbing onto her second hand. I don't care how unprofessional this is- All that matters to me is her. "Your sisters need you to be alive. I- I want you to be alive." I say honestly, "What if next time I'm not there in time-"

"Fine." She says, interrupting me. "Just- please. Stop." She sounds defeated... Like something inside of her snapped. She takes her hands out of mine and looks at the Officers. I sit down in the chair, staying just in case she needs me.
