Noah

I wanted to demand her Australian ass to enter the Hospital! Even if I had to lift her over my shoulders and take her in myself.

I wasn't even supposed to start this job until next week, but a house fire happened, and they are short-staffed. But oddly enough, when I walk into the Hosptial, it doesn't feel like it. I walk through the sliding glass doors, instantly being rammed in the shoulder by a Nurse hurrying to a patient.

"Doctor McGuire" I hear someone call my name as I walk to the Nurses station. I look up to see a male doctor wrapping the stethoscope around his neck, "Thank goodness you are here! We needed another Surgeon in this freaking Hospital!"

"Hello, Doctor..." Not remembering his name-

"Alexander" He nods his head walking next to me. "We met a few days ago."

"Right- Why was I called in?"

"We have burned victims in the ICU, and you have more knowledge of this situation since y-you um."

"Since I was in the Military." I interrupt him, looking directly into his eyes.

"Yes." He swallowed, nodding his head. I continue walking, grabbing a tablet filled with all of the information I need. A house caught on fire, and it left a fourth-degree burn on the youngest daughters leg. She's only sixteen years old, and now I have to amputate her leg. I close my eyes, sighing deeply. Fuck-

I wish I didn't have to, but the deep burns and the healing process... It is more challenging to treat. The trauma is prone to complications such as infections and let's not forget the scarring. Amputation is the safest bet for her. "Which room is Maria Rodriguez, the daughter in?" I ask the young doctor next to me, staring at her chart.

"She's in the ICU, of course." He says as a young nurse in light blue scrubs walks up to him. Doctor Alexander leaves me, and this is my cue to walk to the young girl's Hospital room. I look through the glass seeing her hooked up to a ventilator.

I put on the yellow protective gear over my scrubs, tying it around my waist. Then I grab a disposable mask tying it around my neck and over my mouth. I scrubbed my hands almost raw and the automatic doors open for me. The Nurse from inside the room helps me put a pair of sterile gloves on.

"Thank you." I nod, and she goes back to the side of the girl's bed. When I walk over to the bed, instantly hear the machines do their jobs.

"Hello, Maria. I know you are in a coma, but I like to talk to all of my patients." I look at her vitals then look at the damage on her leg.

"You have a fourth-degree burn. Which means there is no feeling in your whole leg. The nerve endings are destroyed..." I watch as the ventilator moves her chest up and down. "Now I have to amputate your leg." I put the bandage back onto her leg, making sure not to cause any more damage. I take her vitals, type them into the tablet and listen to her lungs. Smoke inhalation- "Let's get you into surgery to remove this lifeless leg."

I open the door with my back, tossing the gloves and protective gear into the hazard bin. I go to the Nurses station and schedule an Operating Room in the next hour.

I make a quick trip to the ER and look around for my brown-haired neighbour. She's not here- I have another terrible feeling, and it's starting to mess up my thinking.

"I need some help over here!" A young blonde nurse yells through the ER. A male patient is fighting against her as she's trying to put in an IV. "Please, sir. I'm just trying to help-" She gets pushed down, hitting her head against the marble floor.

I quickly race to her side, yelling for the other nurses to restrain the man. I grab under her head, and she hisses. "I'm fine. Thank you-" She looks up at me and I help her to her feet. "Doctor." She straightens out her scrubs.

"Let me check that head of yours. You might have a concussion." I put my hand on her upper back, walking her to an empty bed. I help her up on the bed pulling out the flashlight in my breast pocket.

"I'm glad someone takes a concussion seriously..." I mumble to myself as I go through the routine. Follow my finger. Repeat after me. Now say the numbers backward. "Who doesn't take a concussion seriously?" The Nurse asks me as I put the flashlight back into my breast pocket.

I instantly see Phoebe's beautiful green eyes and her strong Australian accent, "Apparently a lot of people," I say, ready to change the subject.

"You don't seem to appear to have a concussion. But if symptoms appear. You know what to do." I give her a small smile, walking away from her. I look down at my watch; it's time for Maria's surgery. As I'm walking to my patient's room, I see the Nurses prepping her. I head to the OR and prep myself.

"Ah!" I hear a female voice say "McGuire. Just the Doc I was looking for you." I look up to see a female Doctor. "I am Doctor Leah Miller, and I will be assisting you in your limb amputation surgery."

"Get ready then." I finish signing some paperwork and tie on my scrub hat. I start scrubbing my hands for the millionth time since I arrived at work. Doctor Miller goes in first, and I follow behind her. The Nurse puts sterile gloves over my bare hands, and I walk next to the prepped leg. I take in a slow deep breath and ask for the scalpel.

Five vigorous hours later, we safely amputated her leg. We had a few complications, but it should be a smooth recovery. I thank the staff who was working with me and head out of the operation room. I dispose of the protective clothing, and I hear my bed calling my name.

I head to the Nurses station, writing that the surgery went well. I wrote that her heart stopped once... They need to watch over her leaving her in the induced coma for a while. I clock out, telling them if they need me to call me. I look outside, and it's already nighttime. I put my stethoscope into my lab coat pocket and walk to the garage. As I step inside, I see my Chevy Truck all by her lonesome. I open the door and slide into the driver's side.

As I drive through the streets of New York, a particular neighbour of mine comes to mind. Her big green eyes, so full of sadness... I pull into my parking spot and head into the complex.

I walk up three flights of stairs to my floor and debate whether or not to make another flight to see Phoebe or not. I shake off those thoughts and head into my apartment. I take off my lab coat, hanging it behind the door. I walk to my bed, taking off my scrub top as well as my shoes. I fling myself into the mattress and pass out.

Abruptly, I am woken up from my deep sleep by a hard thump sound above me. I try to roll over, but it keeps happening... What the hell is happening? That when I hear a groan-

A while later, the groaning stops and a door slams. Finally- I roll over and wait to hear someone. I expected to listen to them walking above me, but all I hear is silence. I close my eyes and welcome the much-needed sleep.
