《Surviving His Royal Highnass, Prince Ashton》Chapter Twenty-Three: Calamity

I could feel the light filtering through the chiffon curtains, casting an orange shadow upon my closed eyes. They fluttered open as last night's events caught up with my conscious. I patted the space next to mine, only to feel the pillow that I placed in between us.

Ash was gone.

I tried to ignore the pang of disappointment that hit me.

Taking my time to rise, I stretched my limbs and examined the ring as it glinted against the sun's rays. A could feel a smile creeping onto my face, without my permission. These feelings of mine... how will I deal with them?

After my maids helped me through my morning routine, I strolled out into the hall, hoping that I'd bump into him. Where could he have gone so early in the morning?

"Good morning dear!" Aunt Claire, now the Queen Mother, greeted me with a lovely smile.

I returned the greeting with a small curtsey, "Aunt Claire, do you happen to know where Ash is?"

Her face contorted into confusion, "Why, he didn't tell you? He took the guards for an inspection around Sedalia. I don't know what spell you put on him, but he has such a sudden interest in the kingdom's affair! I can't thank you enough for that."

I tried to hide the disappointment from my face. How could he go without me?

"I don't think anyone could convince him in that manner besides his own resolve. When do you expect him back?"

"He should return before nightfall."

I nodded, "Well there's nothing for me to do at the moment. Is there any thing I could help with?"

She laughed, "I've always loved your spirit, Evelyn! If you're interested, I'm on my way to the library to revise the finances for a restoration."

I perked up at the opportunity to help, "Of course I'm interested!"

It didn't take too long for me to regret my decision. Arithmetic just wasn't my strong suit. I simply smiled and nodded as Aunt Claire read out dizzying numbers and calculations. Social work, however, was definitely my point of interest. How could Ash just leave me behind for rounds like that? He knew that I'd be of help, seeing how I'm more familiar with the citizens of Sedalia than he'll ever be any time soon. I definitely wasn't going to let this go.

I could feel myself dozing off when the doors of the library slammed open. The Queen Mother gasped at the sudden noise as I shot up from my seat. It was a royal guard. His face was red and his chest was rapidly rising and falling. After effects from running a long distance, no doubt.

"What is the meaning of this?" She asked in a firm voice, not pleased by the interruption.

"My sincere apologies Your Majesty," he was out of breath, "But the King, h-he's been injured - struck by an arrow!"

I felt my heart drop. My vision went blurry and I couldn't hear a thing. I dropped to my knees as panic took over. Aunt Claire rushed to my side, her moving lips inaudible to me, as I blacked out.
