《Cry For Me》Chapter 51

Colton's POV

Cam and I are both hesitant as we follow Jaimie and Sam into the dining room. I can tell by the look on Cam's face that she's unsure about her decision to stay. I grab her hand and squeeze gently.

"Please, have a seat," Jaimie says, waving her wand over two chairs at the table. I pull back Cam's chair and push it in as she sits, then take a seat myself. "Oh, what a gentleman," Jaimie says under her breath and Sam huffs.

"He really is," Cam says, looking at me, genuinely smiling for the first time tonight. I don't think she meant to say that out loud. I smile back at her.

"You guys are adorable, have you two been together long?" Jaimie asks. I know she's just making small talk to avoid the awkwardness and shock of this entire situation. I wonder if she ever even told Sam that they once put a child up for adoption.

"Not that long, actually," Cam says, still in a small voice. "But it feels like I've known him forever," she laughs a little. She's still nervous, but I think she's getting a bit more comfortable.

"Aw, how sweet," Jaimie says.

"Awww," I tease in Cam's ear and she swats my arm telling me to shut up quietly.

"Will, um, Timothy be joining us for dinner?" Cam asks.

"He actually had to stay late at work tonight, but if your willing to stay, he should be home around 8," she says almost hopefully. I think she wants us to stay.

"How do you know my dad?" Sam chimes in and Cam is at a loss for words.

"I'll explain later," his mom says, "but for now, let's eat."

On cue, two women enter from a door that I had no idea was in the room, it blends in with the rest of the wall, with plates in each of their hands. They place one in front of each of us and then exit as quickly as the entered.

The food looks fancy. The chicken even has a leaf on it. For what? I don't know, I pick it off with my fork and start eating. Cam takes very small bites and I know it's because she isn't hungry. She doesn't eat when she's nervous. It makes her sick.

We eat in silence, the only noise being made is from our forks clanking on the plates. I notice Jaimie looking at Cam every few seconds. It must be odd seeing someone so similar looking as you. It must be odd seeing your child for the first time after 16 years.

After we're done eating, Jaimie stands up from the table. "Camryn, would you like to join me in the den for a talk, I'd really love if you would," Jaimie asks.

Cam looks to me, then back at her. Without a word, she stands up, silently agreeing. "I'll be back, only check on me if you hear screaming," Cam whispers in my ear. I can't help but laugh, but I don't know if I was supposed to. She was surely joking though, wasn't she?

They both exit the dining room and I'm left alone with Sam. He's looking at me weirdly so I sit up straight and stare back at him. I haven't had to use my intimidating look in a while, but this kid is asking for it.

"What'd you say your name was again?" He asks, crossing his arms.

"It's Colton," I answer. "How old did you say you were earlier?" I ask in return.

"Gonna be 18 soon, why do you want to know?"

"No reason," I say, but then the math starts kicking in. "Wait, what?"

Camryn's POV

Don't faint, Camryn whatever you do, don't faint. I repeat that to myself again and again as I follow Jaimie into the den. I ball my hands into fists at my side to stop me from shaking. The white walls in the hallways aren't helping with keeping me from fainting again. They're actually giving me a headache.

Before sitting, Jaimie turns around and wraps her arms around me. It's a tight, short hug. Too short if you ask me. "You're a beautiful young woman, Camryn," she says.

"Sit with me?" She asks as she sits on her white leather couch. She has a nervous smile on her lips as I sit a foot away from her. I think she looks like me. We have the same pale skin and black hair. We even have the same nose and eyes. "You must have so many questions," she whispers, looking down at her fingers in her lap.

"I do," I say back quietly. "You must have some too."

"I do."

"I want to hear your questions first," I tell her and she looks up at me.

"Okay," she says, "What took you so long to find me?" She asks. Her question catches me off guard. It's as if she wanted me to find her.

I struggle to find words to form an answer. "I... I guess I never had a reason to. My family was perfect, I was completely content with not knowing who you were," I lie and her face falls a little. I don't think she deserves to know that the fear of knowing the truth kept me from finding her sooner. "I want to ask my questions now," I say.

"What would you like to know?" She says nervously.

"Everything," I answer, "Why did you put me up for adoption in the first place?" I ask. I can feel myself getting bold. I guess my built up feelings are starting to spill through.

"It was complicated," she says, her eyes starting to water looking away from me.

"Please look at me and tell me why you gave me away," I say. I can feel tears pooling in my eyes. She can't even look at me. She can't face her own flesh and blood and tell me the truth.

"I... I just can't," she chokes out, tears falling down her cheeks. I wipe the tears from my own cheek and stand up from the couch. I'm wasting my time. "No! Please don't go," she says reaching for my arm.

"Then tell me why!" I say frustratedly.

"It was hard okay!" She snaps, then continues to cry. "It was so hard." She hangs her head in her hands and I stay standing.

"What?" I ask, staying away from her.

"I already had Sam, and then you came along and we just... we just couldn't," she sobs into her hands. I stand completely still. Processing her information. "We tried," she cries. "We tried to take care of the both of you," she explains.

A chill runs through my body. "What do you mean you tried?" I say through my teeth.

"You were mine for three months after you were born Camryn, we tried for three months, but... but after Tim lost his job we needed a place to stay," she spills quickly. "The only option we had was my moms house and she wouldn't let us stay there with a newborn," she cries, "we had nowhere else to go."

"No," I say quietly, still not moving, still no emotion on my face. I can't believe what I'm hearing. The first thing that comes to my mind is that my parents lied to me. I wasn't adopted days after I was born. I was adopted months after.

"Oh, Camryn," she says reaching for me, but I swat her arm away.

"Don't you dare touch me!" I snap. "How? How could you?! Was it easy? Was three months not enough time to fall in love with your own daughter and decide 'you know what, I'd rather keep mothering my daughter than crash at my moms'?" I ask frustratedly. My throat is burning from the sobs I'm keeping in. My skin is on fire and my heart is beating so fast I'm worried for my health.

I bring my hands to my head to keep it from exploding. Tears are pouring out of my eyes. I can't believe this is happening.

"We would've been on the streets, I was doing what was best for all of us," she defends.

"What was best for us? Look at you and look at me! Look at how you live! I'm living in a house where most of my paychecks go to bills!" I shout. How dare she say she was doing what was best for all of us while she's wearing thousand dollar jewelry and living in this mansion. "But don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade my family for the world," I say much calmer. "You know, they might have their problems but my parents love me with all their heart, and I them."

"You don't think I love you? Giving you up was the hardest thing I had to do!" She cries.

"Then why'd you do it?! You had two children and you got rid of one! If you loved me you would've found a way to make it work," I snap at her. I turn away and walk towards the hallway, leaving her crying in the den by herself. Halfway through the hallway, through my tears and foggy thoughts, I bump into someone.

Colton's POV

I hear shouting. That can't be good, but I stay in my seat at the table. I think Cam meant to check on her if the screaming was out of fear, this screaming is out of hurt. I knew there'd be this kind of screaming. They're both hurt.

"What the hell is going on," Sam asks, standing from his seat.

"Let them, sit down," I tell him.

"Alright tell me who you are and why is your girlfriend yelling at my mother," he says.

"Your mom said she'd explain, so just sit down," I say again in my famous low intimidating voice. This voice got me and Toby out of a lot of fights back in the day.

Sam sits back down. I try to make out what Cam and Jaimie are saying, but it all sounds muffled.

I hear someone walk into the dining room and look up to see a man in a suit and a briefcase in his hand. He looks familiar.

"Dad! Thank god you're here, some crazy shit is happening," Sam says, getting up from the table. His dad doesn't look at him, he just stares blankly at me.

"What are you doing here?" He asks. I'm confused by how it seems like he knows me, but then it hits me. I stand up from my seat to face him, trying to get a better look at him. I've seen this man before.

"You were there," I say, "you were at the hospital after Cam's accident. I... I talked to you, you were there watching her," I say. I can't believe it. Camryn's real father was at the hospital.

Before he can respond, there's more yelling coming from the den. Without a word, he drops his briefcase and follows the screams.

"What the fuck is going on?!" Sam shouts.
