《Cry For Me》Chapter 42

Camryn's POV
"Yea that's fine, I'll be there in 20 minutes," I say to Abel over the phone. She forgot to schedule enough people today and needs me to come in. I honestly don't mind, after all that's happened today, I could use the distraction.
I quickly make my way to the kitchen to grab a snack before I change into my work clothes. The only thing I can find that requires no cooking time is an apple so I grab that and head to my room.
Before I reach the stairs, the front door opens and my mom walks in. "Hey sweetie," she says, "you hungry?" She raises her eyebrow at the sight of an apple hanging out of my mouth.
I quickly chew and swallow so I can respond. "I was called into work so I just wanted a small snack," I laugh uneasily.
"Are you okay? What's wrong?" She asks stepping towards me, closing the front door behind her. I debate on whether or not I should tell her everything that happened today, but then I remember she already has something to deal with.
"Um, dad stopped by and dropped something off for you." My moms face falls and she pulls me in for a hug. Her hold is comforting and I want to cry. I feel bad that it's not about my parents failed marriage, but about Colton. I was hard on him and I shouldn't have let him go home. I hope he's okay.
"I'm sorry sweetie, your dad and I just..." she struggles.
"It's okay mom, I get it," I stop her. I hug her tightly then release her, going upstairs to change. I go into my restroom and see that my makeup is a little smeared.
I quickly fix myself up and change into my black shirt and black pants. I throw hair into a ponytail and grab my apron before leaving my room.
"Hey Cam, where's Aimee?" My mom asks when I reach the door.
"Oh, she had to go home," I mutter. Before she can ask anymore questions, I close the door behind me and get into my car.
The parking lot is filled with cars and it's no wonder why Abel needs my help. The diner is never this busy so I wonder why it's so packed today.
"Camryn! Thank goodness you're here!" Abel cheers from behind the counter as I walk in. I scan the diner and notice everyone here is...old.

"Hey Abel, what's going on?" I ask confusedly.
"The bingo winner from across the street is treating everyone to dinner," she laughs and I join her. "Can you cover the counter and I'll get the tables?" I nod and grab a notepad to start taking orders.
I take the first round of orders to the kitchen counter. "Hey Cam," I hear Ryder say. He's standing at the stove stirring something in a pan.
"Hey Ryder," I wave at him. He stays smiling at me until another cook yells at him for almost burning the food. I laugh and turn my attention back to the counter.
"Camryn over here!" I hear an angry voice call from the end of the counter. I walk over to find Dan squished in his stool between two other elderly men.
"Hi Dan, how's it going?" I ask, smiling at his grumpy face.
"Terrible! Joe wins bingo and decides to bring everyone here! I can barely breathe," he huffs, trying to wiggle the two men away from him. I can't help but laugh at his struggle.
"How about the usual on the house," I offer.
"That's why you're my favorite, young lady," he says a little less angrily.
I grab him a mug and pour him his coffee. As he drinks it, I serve the people around him their food.
"Alright Camryn, I best be going now before I hit someone with my cane," he groans and I laugh. He pulls out his wallet and leaves a five on the counter.
"Dan I said it was on the house," I protest.
"Goodnight Camryn," he smiles, walking away.
"This is why you're my favorite, old man," I call after him and he waves. I put the money in my pocket and continue serving the other customers.
After a few hours, all the bingo people are gone. Abel falls into one of the booths and lets out deep sigh. "Boy, that's the busiest we've been in a while."
"Tell me about it, I burnt myself on the stove twice," Ryder says, joining her in the booth.
"That's because you don't pay attention," I laugh. I'm about to sit at the booth with them when someone else walks in the diner. It's a woman and she walks to the counter and sits.
Abel's about to get up but I tell her I got it. I get back behind the counter and make my way to the lady.

"Hello, would you like something to drink?" I ask her. She looks up at me and I'm stunned by her beauty. She looks to be in her mid thirties and has long brown hair. Her eyes are light brown, almost Hazel and has very prominent cheek bones. Very pretty.
"Some water please," she says, eyeing me carefully. I grab her a glass of water and set it in front of her, but she stays staring, almost studying me.
"Just let me know when you're ready to order," I smile, handing her a menu. She continues to watch me so I make my way into the kitchen. Her staring makes me a little self conscious so I make my way to the bathroom to make sure I have nothing on my face or stuck in my teeth.
Once I'm done making sure my face is clear, I decide to call Colton. I need to apologize for the way I snapped at him today.
I'm worried when he doesn't answer my call so I call again. He answers this time on the second ring.
"Hello?" He answers, groggily.
"I'm sorry, did I wake you up?" I ask.
"What? No it's fine, are you okay?" He asks, still sounding drained.
"Yea I'm fine, I just wanted to call and apologize for the way I reacted to everything today," I say quietly.
"Camryn, it was a lot to deal with, if you reacted any differently I'd think there's something wrong with you," he laughs slightly.
"I'm still sorry," I whisper, "You should come over when I get home from work in a couple of hours."
"Work? Um I don't know, I think I'm just gonna call it a night," he says. What? He must be mad at me even though he's saying it's okay.
"Hey are you okay?" I ask, confused as to why he doesn't want to see me.
"Yea, I'm just really tired, I'll talk to you tomorrow okay Cam, I love you." He hangs up before I can say I love you back. I suddenly feel more sad than I did when I first came to work.
I walk out of the restroom and make my way to the lady at the counter. "Are you ready to order, or would you like some more time," I ask, not completely focused.
"I'll have the burger and fries," she says. I look at her and she's still staring quite hard.
"Yea, sure thing," I say. "Ryder, you have an order," I tell him.
He gets out of the booth and I meet him in the kitchen. "She wants a burger and fries," I tell him.
"Why does she keep looking at you?" he whispers, leaning towards me.
"You see it too!" I whisper back. "I have no idea, just hurry and make her food so she can leave."
"Okay, she's pretty hot though," he smiles sticking his tongue out and I swat his arm. I go back to the counter and start wiping it clean.
"You're very pretty." I look up to see that the lady is talking to me.
"What?" I ask, caught off guard.
"You're a nice looking young woman," She says.
"Oh," I say, a little taken aback, "thank you, so are you," I compliment back, not knowing what to say.
"He did good," she mutters under her breath.
"Excuse me?" I ask confusedly. Before she can respond, Ryder rings that stupid bell telling me her food is ready.
I grab her plate and place it in the counter in front of her. "What was that you were saying?" I ask.
"Nothing," she says, taking a drink of her water. I want to ask her to tell me but then I remember I don't even know this woman. I'm about to join Ryder in the kitchen when the diner door swings open.
It's Colton. Happiness floods me as well as relief that he isn't upset with me.
"Colton," I say from behind the counter. He looks extremely tired and he's slouching, which is odd because he usually has such nice posture.
"Camryn, I'm sorry about hanging up on you," he says, still standing by the door. I feel a little shy having this conversation with a customer between us. She doesn't seem to mind. She just takes another drink of her water before turning around to see who I'm talking to.
"I just need to explain..." Colton stops mid sentence once he glances at the customer. His face hardens and his skin goes pale. He's staring at the woman and she's staring right back.
The realization hits me like a ton of bricks. The hair, the facial features, the eyes. How was I not able to tell before?
"Colton," the woman says.
"Mom?"
