《Cry For Me》Chapter 40

Camryn's POV

Oh god. This is so uncomfortable right now. What is my dad doing here? He has a confused look on his face as he walks towards me. Colton moves from his side of the car to mine and grabs my hand.

"What are you doing here? You should be in school," my dad says. He doesn't seem angry, just genuinely confused.

"I needed a break, I was feeling stressed," I lie. "What are you doing here?" I look at his hands and he's holding a large envelope.

"I just uh, came to drop off these papers for your mother," he says quietly. At first I wonder what's in the envelope, but then it hits me.

Divorce papers.

I feel my heart drop into my stomach and I grip Colton's hand tighter. "I'm sorry, kiddo, I thought you'd be at school," he apologizes. I walk forward and snatch the envelope from his hand and his face falls. I feel bad. I hate him for cheating on my mother, but I do miss my father.

I'm about to turn around and go inside with Colton without saying another word, but then we see flashing lights coming down the street.

It's a police car and they stop directly in front of my house. "Fuck," Colton says under his breath.

An officer steps out of the car and makes his way to us. I catch a glance at my dad and his jaw is touching the floor.

"Are you Colton Sommers?" The officer asks Colton. No, please not now.

"Yes," he says.

"You're under arrest for the assault of Penn Cambridge," says the officer, taking out a pair of handcuffs. Colton lets go of my hand and puts his behind his back. The officer reads him his Miranda rights as he cuffs him and leads him to the car.

I'm completely frozen until the officer shuts the door on Colton's face. I try to run towards the car, but my dad stops me.

"We have to do something," I yell at my dad.

"There's nothing we can do here,"he tells me. "We new to follow them to the station." The cop car drives off and I run to my car. Luckily Colton left the keys in the ignition.

"Aimee's inside, tell her what happened and that I'll be back soon," I say to my dad before driving off. I follow the cop car and I can see Colton hanging his head low.

What's going to happen when we get to the station? Are they going to put him in a cell? I know Colton's tough but that's scary, I don't want him to go through that. Will they even let me bail him out? God I hope I have enough money on me to do so.

I follow the car for ten miles before it turns into the police station. I have to park in a different lot and enter through a different entrance.

I enter the station and its quite smaller than I expected. There's a few people sitting in what looks like a waiting room and they're all watching Judge Judy on the small television in front of them.

I walk forward to the front desk where a small tan woman is sitting. She's wearing a uniform but I can't picture her performing police duties due to her small size.

"How can I help you?" She says, very dull, not taking her eyes of of her small computer screen.

"My boyfriend was just arrested and I need to get him out," I say urgently, but she doesn't seem to care.

"Well he's probably going through booking right now, so you'll have to wait, can I have his name?"

"Colton Sommers," I tell her. I begin pacing in front of the desk. I need to get him out of there as fast as possible. I think I'm scared enough for the both of us.

She types his name into her computer and says, "Huh, don't worry about him, looks like he's been through this a few times."

"Excuse me?" I say, stopping my pacing. I lean over the front desk to get a look at her screen.

It's two reports on two different arrests. One was last year for assaulting Penn the first time. I knew about that. But the other report is from a few years ago. It's another assault I had no idea about.

Without saying anything, I walk over to the waiting room and pace in there. I feel lied to. Even though I never directly asked Colton how many times he's been arrested, I feel like that's something you should tell your girlfriend.

I take a seat next to an older woman and try to calm myself down. I take a few deep breaths and rest my head in my hands. I stay like this for about an hour before the lady at the front desk calls me over.

"Excuse me miss, your boyfriends bail has been set." I quickly make my way over to her.

"How much?" I ask, taking out my wallet.

"$500." Ouch. That'll make a dent in my savings.

"Do you take card?" I ask hopefully.

"There's an ATM right outside," she says, pointing behind me. I step outside and pull out the money.

I give her the cash and I have to sign a crapload of papers before she sends someone to get Colton.

When he comes through the doors, he looks calm, but I'm not. I'm scared, I'm mad at him, but mostly I'm glad to see he's okay.

"Hi," he says, looking down at me.

"Hi," I sigh. I hug him and then grab his hand and pull him outside to my car.

"Look, I'm sorry you had to pay for me, I'll pay you back," he says, sensing my attitude. "Just please don't be mad at me."

"You think I'm mad about the money? I don't care about the money Colton, all I care about is the fact that this is your third time being arrested," I say, raising my voice in the parking lot. Colton's eyes go wide and he stays quiet. "Yeah, I found out, now get in the damn car."

I get in the drivers seat and he gets in on the other side. I start driving and all I can hear is the sound of rain beginning to fall.

"Camryn, I'm-"

"Be quiet, I'm mad," I snap at him. I have every right to be upset with him right now.

"Will you let me explain?" He asks frustratedly, running his fingers through his hair.

"Not now I don't want to hear it."

"Camryn just-"

"Let me be mad! Okay?" I always forgive him so easily and I need to be mad at him for this. I need to make him suffer longer than a car ride home.

"Fine," he huffs, crossing his arms like a child. I decide to take the freeway home so the car ride could be a little shorter. "Can we get something to eat?" He mumbles, still acting like a child.

I glance at the clock on the dashboard. It's been a good 5 hours since we ate this morning. "I'll make you something at home," I sigh back at him.

"Why can't we stop and get something?" He whines.

"Because $500 was just spent on your bail!" I snap. I don't understand why he's acting so immature, it's probably just to annoy me.

"I said I'll pay you back!" He yells.

"You have other expenses you should be worrying about Colton you're not paying me back!"

"Oh yes I am," he scoffs.

"Oh my god!" I groan frustratedly.

"Oh my god," he mocks in an ugly girl voice. I look over at him and give him an 'are you serious?' look. I take the first exit I see to get off the freeway and pull over on the side of the road. "What are you doing?"

"Get out," I say flatly.

"What? No," he says shocked.

"Get out of my car Colton!"

"No, Camryn! We're going to talk about this like adults," he says.

"Like adults? Coming from the guy who just mocked me," I scoff.

"Okay I'm sorry, it's just.. you're not giving me a chance to explain myself," he sighs, leaning his head against the window.

"Fine, explain," I say and his head shoots up.

"Really?" He asks. I nod. "Ok, it was stupid okay. I got into a fight, big surprise. It wasn't even that bad, but I didn't know the guys dad was a cop. That's why I got arrested," he explains quickly.

"Why'd you fight him in the first place?" I ask. He looks down at his hands in his lap.

"It was stupid."

"Tell me," I say.

"It was nothing, he was just saying shit about my mom leaving, it was dumb," he mumbles.

"Oh," I say. "What happened after you were arrested?"

"I got sent to a continuation school and one hell of a beating from my father."

I cringe at his words and how he says them so easily. I don't respond, I just put the car and drive and head home.

"Camryn?" He whispers.

"Hmm?" I look over at him and he takes my right hand, looking down at it in his lap.

"Thank you for not giving up on me."
