《Cry For Me》Chapter Two

My parents sit on either side of our large dinning room table and Walt and Colton sit next to each other on one side. I sit across from them on the other. The food is set out in trays and my mother starts placing food on everyone's plates.

"So Cam, how was your day?" my dad asks, taking a bite of his enchiladas.

"Well I have good news and bad news," I tell him, picking at my plate.

"Oooo, always go with the bad news first," Walt chimes in with a low chuckle. Compared to Walt, my dad looks so young. My dad is handsome, I know this because strangers tell me so. My mom also tells me he was the best looking guy in high school. I've seen his yearbook and I'd have to agree.

My dad laughs too and says, "I agree, shoot."

"Okay," I say cleaning my mouth with a napkin, "well I got a D on my anatomy test."

"Ah, good news, good news, tell me the good news," my dad says putting his hand on his forehead.

"I got an A on my math test," I smile.

"Hey look at that! Unless your planning on becoming a doctor I'd say you're doing good," he laughs. This is what I like about my dad, he always looks on the bright side of things. He holds his fist out in front of me. Oh god, this is him trying to be cool.

I touch my fist to his and say, "Dad, kids don't even do that."

"How would you know, you don't have any friends," he fires back. Walt and Colton both look at me and I laugh.

"Touché," I say, taking another bite of my food. My mom asks my dad about work and he goes on about how the company isn't doing too well. He works for a construction company, and in this economy, nobody really wants to pay for something to be built.

I notice Colton hasn't touched his food, he's just staring at it with his eyebrows furrowed. His dad leans in and whispers something in his ear. My parents don't seem to notice. Colton tenses up and takes a bite of his food. he continues to eat his food like this, tense and angry looking.

"So, Camryn, you go to Brent high?" Walt asks me, diverting my attention from his son.

"Yes that right," I say to him.

"Well at least Colton will have one friend when I enroll him tomorrow," he says. I smile but Colton snorts. Everyone looks to him. My mom hates awkward situations so she quickly changes the subject.

"So Walt, will your wife be joining us this evening?" she ask. This grabs Colton's attention. He stops picking at his plate and raises and eyebrow to his dad.

"Actually, my wife," Walt starts, "she died about five years ago." Before anyone can sigh in remorse, Colton drops his fork on his plate with a loud clank, stands up and walks out of the dining room. "Please excuse him, he still has trouble coping."

"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry," my mom says. I can tell she's embarrassed, so I stand up too.

"Is everyone done, I'm going to clean up," I say, and everyone hands me their plates. I take them into the kitchen and see Colton standing in front of the sink with both of his hands on the counter. He hears me with all the plates and turns around. Without a word he takes the plates from my hands and puts them in the sink.

"Sorry about that," he mumbles and walks back to the dining room before I can even form a sentence. I hear him apologize to my parents and my mom tells him it's okay.

"Camryn, sweetie come in here," my dad calls out. I walk back to where they are and my dad says, "why don't you and Colton go for a walk so you can show him around."

"Dad I'm sure he doesn't want..." I start.

"I'd love to," Colton interrupts me. He gets up from his seat and heads straight for the door. We get outside and start walking down the street, passing all the houses.

"There isn't much to do in this town really, it's actually quite boring," I tell him, but he doesn't seem to be listening. "But the school isn't too bad, what grade are..."

"Look, I couldn't care less about this stupid town, that stupid school, or making stupid friends alright?" he spits. His angry tone catches me off guard. "I just agreed to go on a walk to get out of that damn house."

"I'm... sorry," I say, confused as to why he's so mad. Before I could say anything else, a loud car pulls up in front of us. The driver rolls down the window.

"Ay Colton, hop in," says a guy with a beard. It's not a full beard, more like scruff. He's wearing a leather jacket and has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. Without saying anything to me, Colton hops in the car and they both drive off.

What the hell is his problem? First he takes over the only place that makes me truly happy and now he wants to be rude for no reason. Ugh, whatever.

I walk back to my house and enter alone. The adults had moved to the living room and before I reach the stairs my mom calls me to them.

"Hey where's Colton?" Walt asks.

"Oh one of his friends picked him up," I say simply and Walt's face goes hard. "Why, is there a problem?" I ask.

"No, no. He knows I don't like it when he hangs out with those people, they're troublemakers. I wouldn't be surprised if a fight breaks out and he comes back a complete mess," Walt's voice is calm and steady for a person talking about their son getting into a fight.

I excuse myself from the room and head upstairs. I close my door and jump on the shower to wash this weird day off. It upsets me that I won't be able to watch the moon from my usual spot but there's no point in moping over it now. Luckily these people seem unstable enough that they'd be gone in maybe even less than a year.

Once I'm done washing myself, I finish doing my math homework on my bed. I don't know when I fell asleep but I'm woken up at 3am by shouting. I sit up in my bed to hear where it's coming from. It's coming from outside of my window. I move away my curtain an take a look. I can't see anything through the other window but I can still hear the shouting. I think it's Walt.

I can't make out his words, but he seems pissed. I hear Colton yell back. Is he barely getting home? I realize that I'm being nosy so I lay back down and try to fall back asleep, but it's nearly impossible. I can't be the only one who hears them. Luckily sleep takes over and the next time I wake up it's because of my alarm. I get ready slowly due to lack of sleep and then speed up when I realize I'm about to be late.

I rush to my car and make it to school two minutes after the bell rang. I hurry to math and luckily my teacher doesn't notice. I'm too tired to pay any attention so instead I doodle in my notebook. The bell rings and I go straight to the office, not needing to stop in the hall and talk to friends.

Mrs. Arlene is in the middle of telling me about a party she's planning this weekend when a big black car pulls up in front of the school. We both watch as Walt and Colton make their way to the door. Walt's wearing a gray suit and Colton's wearing a white shirt and a black jacket with a pair of dark jeans. He's also wearing a pair of black sunglasses.

Walt opens the door and Colton walks in first. He stops when he sees me and Walt walks in front of him.

"Camryn!" Walt says, "nice to see you."

"It's nice to see you both, too. You guys are actually a period late, second period just started," I say. Colton doesn't say anything, he just stands still with his arms folded across his chest.

"Oh that's right, you guys start earlier than Valley. So where would I go to register my son?" Walt asks.

"The lady right down the hall can help you with that," I say. He smiles and starts down the hall and Colton follows slowly. I sent him to the secretary named Lisa and I try to listen in on their conversation.

"Oh yes, Colton Sommers," Lisa says, typing on her computer. "Here's your schedule. I'll have one of my aids give you a tour of the school," she says.

"Actually," Walt says, "can that young lady do it? They know each other," he says, pointing at me. I quickly turn away and pretend to be writing something.

"Oh of course!" Lisa says, "Camryn, come give your friend a tour." I look up from my piece of paper and Colton is chewing on the inside of his cheek.

"Go for it Cam," Mrs. Arlene tells me. I get up from the front desk and slowly walk over to Lisa, Walt and Colton.

"Here's his schedule, show him his classes," Lisa says, handing me a piece of paper. "Oh but wait, you need to take your ID photo," she adds. "Can you please remove you're glasses."

Colton takes off his glasses, revealing a big purple bruise surrounding his left eye. Lisa gasps and says, "you know what, just come up to the office when you're ready to take the picture." Colton puts his glasses back on and crosses his arms again.

"I'll pick you up after school, son," Walt says, patting Colton on the back and walking toward the front doors.

"Okay, let's go," I say to him and he follows me out of the office. First I take him by the student store to pay for a locker and then I show him where it is. All of the lockers are in the E building and his locker is five away from mine. I never use my locker anymore because I just keep everything in my car. "Here it is," I say, pointing to the gray locker. "To open it all you do is turn it to the..."

"I know how to open a locker," he snaps.

"Alright I'm sorry," I say, and he lets out a big sigh. "I don't get it, did I do something wrong?" I ask.

"You told my dad that I left," he says harshly. He's standing a little too close to me and if I were able to see his eyes, I bet they'd look cold.

"What was I supposed to tell him?" I say back.

"Who says you had to say anything?" he says a little louder. He steps away from me and pinches the bridge of his nose.

"Well I'm sorry, but maybe you should listen to your dad, I mean look at your face." Colton's head snaps up and he steps closer to me again and I back into the lockers.

"Don't you ever tell me what to do about my father, you hear me," he nearly shouts. Why isn't anybody walking down the halls to help me?

I nod and he backs off. He snatches his schedule from my hand and says, "you can go back, I'll find my way around." I don't say anything, I just walk back to the office as quick as I can.

Today I'm not looking forward to third period because before Colton took his schedule, I saw that he too has anatomy. I mentally go over the class seating chart. I sit in the back row next to a kid named Arko, and next to Arko is Britney and next to Britney is the only available seat in the class.

I don't think Colton would be too happy about that.

I take my time walking to that class and when I get there, Colton is nowhere to be seen. I take my seat next to Arko and I'm immediately consumed by his strong scent. Arko is the kind of kid who takes PE very seriously and he just so happens to have it right before this period and sometimes his scent is a little... bad. He's pretty much my only friend in that class, but when his scent reaches maximum levels of rancidness, I can't really bear to sit too close.

"Camryn," he says, "did you do the key terms?"

"Nope," I say quickly, breathing only through my mouth. The bell rings and Colton barely makes it before Mr. Miller closes the door. Colton doesn't notice me and hands the teacher his schedule. Mr. Miller starts talking to him and then points to his sunglasses and Colton lowers them and Miller nods and Colton puts them back on.

Miller points to the seat in the same row as me and Colton starts walking to it. That's when he notices me and I literally hear him sigh. I'm too busy focusing on inhaling through my mouth to focus on this boy's hate for me. Miller is lecturing about the nervous system when I turn my head and see Colton look at me. Or maybe he's not, I can't tell because of his glasses. I look away anyways and accidentally breathe through my nose.

Arko is one cool dude, but man does he stink. I immediately slap my hand to my nose. I always make sure to wear a nice lotion or perfume for this reason. The sweet scent of my lotion fills my nose and I'm relieved of the stench.

The bell rings and I exit the class as fast as I can. "Why did you look so uncomfortable in class?" someone asks from behind me. I turn around and it's Colton.

"Excuse me?" I ask him.

"In class, you looked sick, are you alright?" So he was looking at me.

"I'm fine, it's just the boy next to me doesn't smell all too great," I say, confused by how nice he's seeming right now.

"Oh," is all he says and then he walks ahead of me, leaving me alone again.

There's his rude attitude.
