《Of Romance and Revenge》Thirteen

By the time Oliver makes it back to the car and slides into the driver's seat, my mood is officially soured.

Oliver is humming quietly to himself, a sly smile licking the sides of his lips. At least one of us is pleased. It's like our moods completely swapped with each other.

"Where to next?" He asks joyfully.

His hand casually finds its way to my knee and attempts to stroke lazy circles there. Call me petty, but I jerk my leg away and turn to face the window so he can't see the scowl that seems to have found a home on my face.

"Umm, did I miss something?" His voice raises slightly at the end of his question.

It would have been endearing if I didn't feel like punching him in the face right now. How could I have been so stupid? I let myself act on impulse and old feelings, and he definitely didn't try to stop me. I want to scream at him, but I know he isn't the one to blame.

Yeah, he may have cheated on Lily. He may have led me on, but I initiated things.

I'm to blame.

"Just drop me off at home. Your girlfriend seemed pretty excited for your date," I mutter, sulking.

He groans, slamming his fist on the steering wheel. I assume he isn't going to respond to me as he tears out of the parking lot, mumbling a string of expletives under his breath. He weaves in and out of traffic, his jaw set angrily as he stares straight ahead.

"She's not my girlfriend," he finally responds.

It's so quiet, I almost believe I was just hearing things.

"Doesn't matter."

I know I'm moping and probably being a little childish, but I can't help it. All things considered, I think I've handled being back pretty well so far.

He knows Lily has had a thing for him for years. He has to know that going back and forth between us won't work.

"I swear. We just hang out every once in a while, hook up sometimes. She knows it's completely casual. I can bail on her if you want."

His voice changes from angry to pleading. Still, I don't budge.

"Oh, please. You know she's had a crush on you for years. That girl is in love with you. It may be casual on your end, but it's definitely not on hers."

She and I had that in common, but I wasn't about to sell myself out.

He sighs, long and heavy. His fingers drum nervously against the wheel as we turn down my street.

We pull up to my house. He turns to face me as I begin unbuckling my seatbelt. He opens his mouth to speak, but I cut him off.

"Thanks for bringing me today. I'd like to be more involved in meetings from now on, if that's okay. Have fun on your date!"

I hop out and slam the door before he has the chance to respond. It takes everything in me to not look back at him as I bound up the steps. He speeds off as I step inside.

I can't help the sob that bubbles out of my throat as I close the door. It's only the first full day back and I'm already a mess.

The rest of the day is spend cleaning the house. When every surface, nook, and cranny is spotless, I give in. I'm just not in the mood to be alone right now, so I call the one person I know is always down for a party.

"Hey, Mar. You off tonight?"
