《The Jock's Blackmail》#23: Sweet Victory

Looking up from the last text message I sent, I scanned the almost empty ice cream shop. I was well aware Leo and his team had a game that night, everyone at school was talking about it. But Charlie and I had already agreed to cover for Cherry and Ashton for the night because they were going out of town to meet up with some high school friends. And now, several hours later, I was debating on asking Leo how the game went, figuring it was already done.

However, just as I was about to start typing, the bell above the store's door rang as it opened, and I watched in amazement (and a bit of horror) as a familiar group of male teens rushed in, cheering, hollering, and laughing. At the center of it all, leading the pack, was none other than Leo himself with a smile so big I can only assume that the outcome of their game was a good one.

"Hey! It's you!"

I really didn't know how I felt about Jeremy, but in that moment I wanted to maybe punch him. Every football player's eyes were on me with varying stages of recognition on their faces, especially Leo's. He seemed surprised to see my ugly mug, but he smiled anyway, and I took back whatever violent thoughts my brain had of Jeremy.

"Fancy seeing you here..." he trailed off, then suddenly looked very confused. "You know, I never did catch your name."

I had never been so grateful that we didn't have name tags, and for Charlie as my blonde friend stepped in with a welcoming smile, gently nudging me aside so I could make my escape. Bless you, Lee. "Hey, everyone! How was the game?"

The change of subject had the boys acting like dogs that saw a squirrel. They all started talking excitedly over each other.

"What the hell?" The voice came from behind me, and I looked over my shoulder to find Mandy, another college student we worked with, her head sticking out the back room door with a look of bewilderment. "That's a whole lot of testosterone."

"Tell me about it," I said, then looked back to Charlie as she took their orders. "We're about to get busy."

And busy we were once Charlie brought in fifteen orders for us to make. In the midst of making a banana split, Charlie passed behind me then slyly said, "That's Leo's order, by the way."

Naturally, I froze, and for a second, just stared down at the half finished frozen treat. My mind was racing as fast as my heart as my hand started moving again. But this time I was smiling. Just as I was getting ready to deliver the first round of the team's orders, my phone pinged with a message.

My smile widened as I slipped my phone back into my pant's pocket.

"Here you go guys," I announced, placing the tray down on the long table the football team took up. "The rest of your orders will be right out."

Half way to the back room door, I chanced a look over my shoulder. My eyes found Leo as he looked up from his order. On the plate his banana split was on, I had writen out Congratulations in cursive with some chocolate syrup. His eyes found mine and he smiled again. Thank you, he mouthed, and I smiled back with a nod, a bit charmed, before disappearing behind the door, my stomach doing backflips.
