《The Jock's Blackmail》#4: Rude Awakening

Let me tell you one thing: I'm not a morning person. Everything somehow manages to piss me off before I get my cup of coffee. Once I have my caffeine-filled drink, I'm good. So Leo totally deserved my wrath when I see a text from him the next morning after The Incident.

I slammed my phone back down on my nightstand, before flopping out of bed - an action I can only imagine looked like a human imitating a seal. My family knew better than to talk to me (unlike some other people) and once I took my first sip of joe, everyone let out a collective sigh.

"The devil has been contained, hallelujah!" Aubrey exclaimed from the kitchen table, raised her arms in the air, before sharing a high five with dad who didn't even look away from the newspaper he was reading.

I sent her a dirty look over the rim of my coffee mug, before flipping her off as I took the seat across from her. Mom looked like she wanted to scold me, but knew it wouldn't work. There was no rule against using impolite hand gestures, just cussing. I can see her biting her tongue as she turned her eyes heavenward, no doubt questioning where she went wrong with raising us.

Aubrey stuck her tongue out at me in return, only to yelp when mom set a steaming hot plate of eggs and bacon right in front of her, narrowly missing her tongue. Mom gave her a saccharine smile. "Breakfast my dear daughter."

Aubrey grinned back sheepishly. "Thank you, mother. I love you."

Mom rolled her eyes, but huffed an exasperated, "I love you, too," before going back to the stove. I couldn't help but snicker a little at their antics.

Aubrey and mom butted heads the most, but it was all in familial love. After all, my fifteen-almost-sixteen-year-old sister was just too weird not to love. Not that I'd ever say that to her face. I have a reputation of being a shitty older sister to keep after all.

Mom had just given me my plate of bacon and eggs when dad's work phone started ringing. Three sets of eyes snapped towards him as he answered the call. "Grant here."

I placed a piece of bacon in my mouth and chewed as I continued to watch my sperm donor. He had his cop face on as he answered in short nods, before ending the conversation with a, "I'll be there in twenty."

He stood up, and mom frowned, walking around the table to stand next to him. "What about breakfast?"

Dad dropped a kiss to her forehead, which I still found cute because dad stood at 6'5 while mom was forever 5'5, and dad had to bend down to interact with her. He gave her a smile. "I'll grab some donuts on the way. Can you put some coffee in my to-go cup?"

As mom nodded, Aubrey and I shared a look, before giggling. Dad raised a brow at us. "What?"

"You just confirmed every cop stereotype out there." I laughed, making him roll his eyes.

"Hey, coffee and donuts go well together. Can't blame us." He pointed at me and then at Aubrey, his gaze taking on a look of mock sternness complete with an exaggerated eye squint. "Be good at school, both of you."

"Aren't we always?" Aubrey quipped, and this time she was the one who had three pairs of eyes pinned on her. When she saw this, she groaned. "It was one time!"

Dad turned back to mom. "I'll go get ready."

"Okay."

We watched as he bounded up the stairs to their room, before going back to our respective tasks. I checked the time on mom's electric stove and decided I had plenty of time to savor my breakfast. By the time I finished eating, I had forgotten about my little episode with Leo via text until I saw my phone. I felt like it was mocking me. I stared at it for a few seconds, before finally picking it up.

He replied.

As usual, I was a bit confused, but then I reread my text to him and understood what he meant.

I knew how old he was, but no need to give that little information away.

I laughed a little. Leo loved the word, apparently. I recalled several times I heard him exclaim the word during lunch in the cafeteria.

My smile was just a tad evil.

If only you knew. I shook my head before tapping away on my phone.

I snorted at his reply then tossed my phone back on the bed. Time to get ready.
