《Loveless Marriage》Chapter 18

Work was surprisingly normal. No one I knew was waiting in the hospital wards. Just as I was about to head for my first surgery that day, my phone beeped signaling a message received. I asked for a moment from them and took my phone out of my coat.
😘
I blinked a few times and looked around to see if this was some kind of dream. As a nurse walked by, I had asked her to pinch me. And when she did, it was not pain that filled my body. It was a very warm feeling. A warm feeling that I have not experienced before. The nurse walked away, laughing to herself. I reread the message a few more to see if there was any hidden meaning to it.
But no, it was a very straightforward message. A smile peeked out onto my lips and letting the warm feeling intensify. I held my phone against chest as Joseph walked towards me. " Hannah, we are waiting for you," He informed. But my mind refused to listen to those words. Joseph stood a little further away from me and looked at me up and down. " Yoohoo, earth to Hannah Daniel Young!" He waved his hand vigorously in front of my face.
I jerked awake from my daydream and stared at Joseph. " Spill. What happened?" He asked his hands resting on his hips. I shook my head, a smile still playing on my lips. Joseph snatched the phone from me and read the message sent by Daniel. Joseph's eyes widened as he looked at me. " You've got a lot of things to tell me. But not now. We need you in surgery. Come!" He grabbed my arm and rushed into the surgery.
I did not say everything to Joseph. But just because I did not say it did not mean that I was lying. I just avoided my horrible past and told him that I will tell him some time else. He was angry at first, but soon fangirled over Daniel dragging me out of breakfast despite my brother. We had enough time for lunch, but I did not have much.

I could not, with Mother's presence in my mind, I could definitely not have much food. Joseph even tried to feed me but I put my foot down, saying that I did not want to eat anymore. Now, it is a completely different story. I was at the nurses station, talking to them about patients who have already been discharged. " Oh Hannah!" Joseph shouted across the corridor, walking towards me with a knowing smile.
The conversation that the nurses had was stopped and Joseph reached us. I slowly turned to him and gave him a innocent look. "What are you doing here, Hannah boo?" He asked, making me cringe with his nicknames. I opened my mouth to reply but he cut me before that. " Yeah, yeah, I know. You are here, chatting with the nurses. But are you not supposed to be somewhere else?" He asked, his hands once again resting on his hips.
But as usual before I could reply, he pulled me away from them and pushed me into the elevator. I was about to protest but Joseph started to talk again. " How can you forget about your date? Gosh, Hannah. If I was Daniel, I would think that you don't want to go for the date." He concluded, looking at me. I hung my head in shame, allowing him to realise that that was what I was exactly doing. He let put a very big gasp and swatted my arm.
" How dare you! How can you give up such a big opportunity?!" His voice raised a bit, making me guilty even further. The elevator door opened and he pulled me out, grabbing my forearm this time. I wanted to resist but with Joseph, I knew that he would push me and Daniel together into a room and lock us together if he had the chance. He pushed me out of the hospital, causing me to stumble.
" You will not enter this hospital until your date has ended and you have gotten a kiss from Daniel. You got it?" Joseph shouted, his hands on his hips once again. I opened my mouth to protest to him but he stormed off before I could. I threw my hands into the air and let them drop to my side as I processed what just happened. " Why am I always not able to talk?" I muttered to myself, frustration filling me.

A horn blasted throughout the parking space, jerking me with its volume. My body whipped around to see a familiar White Mercedes. I let out a puff of air, realizing it wasn't the Smith person. Daniel stepped out of his car and was by my side in a few seconds. " Does that happen often?" He asked, pointing to the entrance. A soft smile graced my lips as I looked up at him.
" No, no. Joseph was just being, well Jospeh." I replied. He let a smile slip past his hard face before holding his hand out to me. My gaze flipped to his hand and his eyes repeatedly, trying to come to a decision. Throughout this time his hand never waivered, waiting for me. I slowly placed my hand on his, only to be pulled closed to him. A soft peck was placed on my cheek, earning a very loud gasp from me.
" Now you can step into the hospital," He whispered into my ear, my cheeks warming up immediately. He stepped back with a very cheeky smile and walked us to his car. He opened the car door for me, like the gentleman he is, and he got himself settled behind the steering. " Now I hope you are hungry, because we are going to eat." He informed, pulling out of the lot.
That was when I realised what he was doing. " D...Daniel, you do not have to do this," I told him, which seemed to have no effect on him. " Hannah, you need to be comfortable around me so that you can explain what happened to you. That is what I am trying to do," Daniel replied, his gaze to me then back to the road. " Anyways, we're here." He spoke as he parked the car.
He had indeed parked but swiftly, causing attention to be brought upon us. " Come, let's go!" Daniel exclaimed, looking like a child. I shook my head and smiled as he opened the door for me. Stepping out of the car, cool air swirled around me as the coolness settled onto my body.
" Come!" Daniel pulled me out of my trance as he held his hand in mine. He quickly pulled me into the cafe and we were seated in a nice, warm and comfortable corner. A waitress was immediately appointed to our table and she walked briskly to us. " Hi! Welcome to our cafe! May I take your order?" She asked looking between us.
For some reason, her chirpy attitude irked me. How was she able to remain so happy in such a busy cafe with some difficult customers? My stomach grumbled in response, turning the heads of Daniel and the waitress. My face started to heat up as I looked down to my hands that were resting on my palms. Daniel ordered for the both of us and the waitress assured that she would bring it as soon as possible.
" Hannah," Daniel's voice rung across the table. I looked up to see his gaze piercing into mine. " Have you had anything to eat through the day?" He asked. I could not trust my voice after such an embarrassment so I settled on nodding instead. He certainly did not look convinced but nodded slowly to me.
" How about you start from the beginning?" Daniel asked, getting ready to catch me if I were to bolt. My hands clasped together as I pondered if I would be able to just bolt. But then, I remembered that I did not have any energy in me at all. I let out a slow breath before starting.
