《Beyond The Walls | ✔》Ch 1: The Godawful Coffee

I seated myself on the chair as I turned the laptop on and took a sip of my coffee.

It was awful.

My secretary who knew the choice and taste of my coffee had resigned a week ago, and let's just say I had been pretty much struggling with everything since then.

Damn her for marrying someone who lived in another state.

I reviewed the files that were pending and e-mailed the important documents to our company's sponsors and took another sip of the coffee.

It was still awful.

I sighed and rubbed my temples as I saw my phone ringing with the name of a person I really wasn't in a mood to talk to.

"Good morning Mr. Rhodes."

"Good morning Mr. Grace. How can I help you?" I asked in a voice that sounded somewhat professional.

Somewhat.

"I told you to send me the packages been given by the Sterling's corporation, but I'm afraid I see nothing at my door, Mr. Rhodes," Kevin Grace said in his firm Spanish accent and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.

"I deeply apologise Mr. Grace, I've been busy with the tours and conferences that I didn't notice that my employees still haven't sent you the packages. I'll ask them to do it right away."

"Alright, Mr. Rhodes, have a good day," and with that he cut the call and I almost dashed the damn phone to the ground.

Filthy drug dealer.

Grace Corporation was the only company that had more demand in market than mine did with unfair means, might I add, and that thought itself was enough to make me want to kill its owner.

I despised Kevin from the day I stepped into business, and the fact that he tried to act superior than me on every fucking occasion made me hate him even more.

"Sup, sad fuck?" Alex barged into the office without my permission yet again and I rolled my eyes.

"It's 8 and you're in the office. Got to admit I'm impressed, Alexander," I gave him another eye roll as he plopped down on the sofa and pulled his phone out from his pocket.

"Yeah thanks," he absentmindedly replied with a wave of his hand and, once again, I resisted the urge to throw my laptop at him.

This day was a mess.

"The packages, Alexander," I said in a stern voice to grab his attention.

"What packages?" he replied without lifting his head up from the damn phone.

"I told you to deliver the packages to Kevin, man. How can you forget that?"

"Oh shit, I forgot. That asshole called, didn't he?" finally the boy looked from his phone and cursed under his breath as he stood up from the sofa and made his way towards me.

"Of course he did. What did you expect?" I shrugged as he sat down on the seat opposite me and shook his head lightly.

"Yeah, don't worry, I'll ask Gwen to do it today," he said and I nodded.

"By the way, I still don't have a secretary," I reminded my best friend who - unfortunately - happened to be the half owner of this company.

Alex looked at me, then at his phone, then back at me and cursed. He gave my words a thought for a few moments and then a devilish smile crept up on his face.

I already knew what was coming up.

"Nope. Definitely not," I lifted my hands up in a surrendering manner.

"Oh please, Ace. Just one last time, I promise," he gave me his puppy dog eyes and I shook my head no.

"No, not happening. You know it - interviews aren't my thing, Alex," I whined like a three year old. Something that I only did in front of the handful of people who knew me very well.

"Just for one day, man. I swear this is the last time," he begged and I narrowed my eyes at him.

"Where are you off to anyway?" I asked and took another sip of the godawful coffee.

Yeah never mind, it was still awful.

"It's mom's birthday, Ace, you know she throws a huge party every year and you still manage to find a way to not attend it every year. I'm obviously flying to Texas in two hours," he rolled his eyes and I gave him a wicked smile.

"Talent, bro," I winked.

Everybody knew parties weren't my thing, so nobody even bothered to me invite me anymore because I always found a way to ditch.

"Anyway, I'm leaving. I texted Gwen to deliver the parcels to Kevin. Best of luck with the interviews," he gave me a two finger salute and left me to do all the work all alone yet again.

I didn't mind working, but taking interviews was the hardest thing you could ever ask me to do. Ever since this company was established, all the interviews were taken by Alexander himself because everybody knew how I sucked at human interaction.

I groaned at the thought of having to talk to random people about their hobbies and interests and relationships and what not.

This was going to be a long day.
