《Last Chance✔ (Completed)》Chapter Ten

I can feel something shining bright in my face and I open my eyes to see the light of the morning sun leaking through the off white curtains in my bedroom.

I'm still tired and I do not want to get up for the day. I am most definitely not a morning person.

I glance at the clock on my bedside table and it reads 6:57.

I have to be at the clinic at 8, so I get up and head to the ensuite to take a quick shower and get dressed. I unpack my white lab coat from my bag and head off.

When I get to my office I smile. A small metal nameplate next to the door reads Dr. Danvers, M.D. I still can't believe this amazing office is mine.

I enter through the door and decide to try out my new chair and desk. I take notice that the top of the desk now contains a desktop computer, pens, notebooks, and patient files that were not there yesterday.

A knock sounds on my door and I look up to see Noah there smiling. He's always smiling, it's so cute.

"Hey Elena I got you some coffee." He walks over and places the styrofoam cup into my hand.

I look at him grateful. "Thank you. I really needed this."

"You're welcome. So, those files on your desk...," he points to them getting straight to buisness. "are the patients you will be handling today. The first one will arrive around 8:30 and I will be with you to supervise the first few." I nod my head in understanding. I'm so excited.

I get things situated and right at 8:30 my first patient arrives and I get started.

The morning passes by rather quickly. I've been so busy I barely had time for a lunchbreak. There are many wolves that come in not only from the packhouse, but from their own homes. I had a few come in for a sickness and some for wounds. Werewolves heal quicker than humans, but with medication it can make them feel better faster and treating wounds prevents infection and any further problems down the road.

I have one more patient for the day. I look for the file and skim over the symptoms they described she had before she arrives.

There's a soft tap at my door. It must be her. I call for them to come in. I glance at one more thing in the file and put it down to greet my patient.

When I raise my head my heart drops to my stomach and I freeze. A woman and a little girl stand near the doorway, but it's not just any woman.

It's Rachel.

She looks at me and her eyes go wide. She clearly wasn't expecting the doctor to be me. For a moment neither of us say anything.

She's the one to break the silence first. "Oh my god Elena is that you? I didn't know you were back. It's so good to see you." She comes over and hugs me.

I return it awkwardly and she pulls me at an arm's length to look at me. My mouth is opening and closing like a fish.

"H..hi Rachel," I stutter. "It's good to see you too. It's been a while," I add.

"I know six years to be exact. So you're a doctor now. That's amazing." She looks me up and down. "The years have done you well. You look so good," she beams at me.

"You look stunning too, as always," I reply. And she does. Her blonde hair that used to go down to her waist now ends at the bottom of her shoulder blades. It makes her look older and more mature and suits her really well. Other than that she looks like the same girl I remember from high school. She's still gorgeous, not that I expected her not to be.

Below her someone starts to make a coughing sound. I look down to see the little girl. She has the same blonde hair and green eyes as Rachel. She's the exact copy of her. Are they related somehow?

Noticing my observation Rachel introduces her. "This is Peyton, my daughter."

Her answer takes me by surprise. Daughter? She and Pierson had a daughter together? I don't know why, but that fact makes me feel sad. I shouldn't be feeling that way and honestly don't know why I do.

I look at Peyton and offer her a smile.

"Hello Peyton I'm Dr. Danvers." I offer my hand for her to shake it and she glances at it reluctantly before puting her small hand in mine.

"Hi," she says shyly. She coughs again and I can tell she's not feeling well. Her cheeks are red and her eyes are dull and droopy. Her nose also seems to be running.

I lead them to one of our patient rooms and tell Rachel to set her on the bed and I take her temperature and her other vitals.

"I think she may have the flu so I'm going to do a quick test on her to be sure."

I get started and look over at Rachel. I can see her mark on her neck near her shoulder. I look away.

"She looks just like you," I state.

"I know everybody tells me that. Her father doesn't mind though. He loves that she's my twin. He wants a boy next and believes he will look like him if we do have one."

I can see the happiness in her eyes when she talks about her family.

"What about you? You haven't found your mate yet?" She asks me.

Her question takes me by surprise. She doesn't know? I look at her and her eyebrows are scrunched and her eyes curious. I can see that she really doesn't.

"Uh. Yeah I did," I say avoiding looking her in the eyes.

"Okay Peyton you do have the flu and I'm going to give you a shot. It won't hurt it'll just be a little sting ok?"

She nods her head at me.

"Did he come here with you or...?" Rachel goes on to ask.

I pick up the shot and measure out the right amount of liquid from a small glass bottle. I set it down on the metal plate and rub Peyton' s arm with an alcohol pad.

"He didn't want me," I say casually. I tell Peyton I will poke her on three.

"I'm sorry Elena. I didn't know. Now I feel like a huge jerk," she says embarrassed.

"One, two, three." I push the needle in and inject the clear liquid. "Good job. You did very good." I clean Peyton's arm, put a band-aid on, and help her off the bed before finally facing Rachel.

"It's ok Rachel. It's not a big deal really. I'm over it." I shrug my shoulders.

"If it's any consolation I don't know how someone could not want you. You're an amazing and wonderful person," she says sincerely.

I can see why Pierson didn't want to give her up. She's so sweet and down to earth.

"Thank you." I give Rachel the prescription of medication and hand Peyton a lollipop.

"Tonight we're having a small dinner. I would love for you to come. Maybe we can catch up on all these missed years?"

I don't know if that's such a good idea.

"I'll think about it," I tell her.

"I hope you'll make it," she says giving me a half smile before waving goodbye.
