《Ice Queen》Chapter 64 ~ "A low dosage of what?"

"How do you feel about today?" I ask, pulling into the parking lot at the doctor's office. "Are you nervous?"

"I guess I am a little bit." She says and I nod, shutting off the car and reaching over for her hand.

Today was the day of Sasha's doctor's appointment, she was supposed to get a few tests done today and then she'd be put on medication for anxiety. I knew it was something that she nearly cried over last week so I wanted to be here for her today.

It had been three days since our meeting at the school where Jake and Sabrina were dealt with. Even though the horrible flyers still circulated and it was far from being over, Sasha seemed much more relaxed. She was lighter than I'd ever seen her before and knowing that made me smile.

Since then she'd been polishing her medal and meeting with Kate every so often to chat. She seemed to be taking pride in her skating now, it wasn't the be-all-end-all anymore, now it was something she was genuinely loving. She and Kate had already been making up a new schedule for over the summer and into early fall. Next week they were going to start filing paperwork for her Olympic tryouts.

It was still surreal that my girlfriend was a national figure skating champion. It just made me so proud, that all of the dreams she'd had since we were little were coming true. Life was far from perfect, as it so often was for the two of us, but she was happy.

Of course Rachel and Mel had sat with her on Monday once we came back to school. They were just dying to know what was going on after that morning, and Sasha exchanged a few details. The three of them were fast friends, easily including Irene into the conversation as well. Maddie and Brooke had become closer with Malcolm and Adrian, everyone seemed to get along.

Then everyday since then, more people were showing up to sit with us at lunch. Most wanting to ask Sasha about gossip or her figure skating titles, she was more happy to answer the inquiries about her figure skating though. The table was crowded and noisy, I found myself missing our quiet lunches together where she'd whisper with me and give me a kiss on the cheek.

Sasha's social life was like wildfire, everyone wanting to meet up with her or invite her out. She and I were busy, but unlike my life with Sabrina, Sasha would turn people down in favour of spending time with me alone. She'd spend nights with me and I'd spend them with her, she told me as much as she liked going out and seeing everyone, that what she really wanted was to spend a night in with me.

"Do you think I'm just overthinking this?" She asks tearing me from my train of thought and I shake my head.

"Of course not." I tell her and she nods. "Sasha, when new things happen it's alright to be a bit nervous about them."

"I just....hate thinking that there's something wrong with me." She says quietly.

"There's nothing wrong with you." I tell her quietly. "Reaching out for help is one of the hardest things to do. But it's important to take care of yourself, Sash I guarantee this will make you feel a lot better." I whisper and she sighs, but gives me a small smile.

"Thanks for taking me." She says, running her thumb back and forth over my knuckles. "It means a lot to have you here with me."

"Of course." I tell her and she smiles. "You know I love you." Her whole face softens when I say that and she leans over to kiss my cheek.

"I love you more." She says and I smile, getting out of the car and running around to open her door for her. I take her hand and walk with her inside.

She then fills out a quick form and answers some questions before getting sent back to wait for the doctor. There's a few people sitting around the room, waiting for their turn to go in. She just wrapped her arms around my bicep and snuggled into my side. I lean over and kiss the top of her head and she smiles.

"How about we play a game to pass the time, take your mind off it?" I ask and she laughs.

"Like what?" She asks and I smile, feeling a memory rush into my head.

---

"How long do you think it'll be before we start?" I ask and Sasha shrugs, her legs swinging back and forth, not touching the ground. We were sitting on a bench in the arena, waiting for our instructor to show up.

"Who knows?" She says. "I can't wait, I'm finally nailing my spins." I watch the over-excited grin come up on her face and I feel my cheeks flush. Sasha only got like this when she was perfecting some aspect of skating.

"Me too." I tell her and she nods. "I'm glad we get to practice together."

"So am I." She says, with a firm nod. Her polished bun not shifting an inch on the back of her head. "I'm glad you're my best friend." I nod, watching her smile get wider and her own cheeks turning pink. "I made something for you."

"Really?" I ask and she nods. "What is it?"

"Promise you won't laugh?" She asks and I nod, knowing I'd swear on my life. "Okay, close your eyes."

I humour her and shut them tight, I feel her turn my palm over and place something in it. "Can I look?" I ask.

"Sure." She says and I open my eyes. In my palm sits a bracelet, spelling out B-F-F. I got excited and immediately gave her a hug.

"Thanks Sasha." I tell her and I hear her laughter over my shoulder. "You're my best friend too."

She helps me tie it on tight and then we're back to not-so-patiently-waiting for our instructor.

"Wanna play I-spy?" She asks and I nod. The two of us played all the time, passing time before and after practice, on road trips, laying awake at sleepovers.

"Yeah!" I say too excitedly.

"Can I go first?" She asks, seeming just as excited as me, if not more.

---

"Do you want to play our favourite?" I ask and she furrows her eyebrows before seeming to understand. Then a look of realization comes up over her face and she leans up to kiss my cheek.

"I thought you'd never ask." She says and I smile. "Alright, I-spy with my little eye something that is......red."

Immediately I'm taken back through intense memories with Sasha, I can't stop the heat bubbling in my stomach or the smile on my face. We play quietly, alternating back and forth and guessing what the other one's thinking.

"Is it the wet floor sign?" I guess but she shakes her head.

"Nope." She says with a small laugh.

"Sasha....Petrov?" A nurse says, appearing with a clipboard and stumbling over Sasha's last name.

"It was the poster on epilepsy on the wall over there." She whispers nodding her head over and then pulling me up with her. I laugh and follow her down the hall and into an examination room.

"Alright." The nurse says. "If you could just take off your coat and shoes, we'll just weigh you and measure you."

Sasha nods and slips off her coat and shoes before standing next to the hight scale on the wall. I watch as the nurse pulls down a little ledge until it rests on top of her head.

"You can step away there dear." The nurse says and Sasha steps back while her hight is read. "You're just a little over five-five." She says and Sasha nods as the information is scribbled down in a notebook. "Alright, and if you could step up here?" She says turning on the scale. Sasha steps up and the numbers scroll before stopping and the screen beeps and flashes.

"It looks like your one-hundred and one point-two pounds." She says cataloging that information as well. I have to keep my gasp in, I didn't know she was that light. I knew Sasha was skinny but that concerned me, more than knowing about her food like I already did.

"We'll just finish up by taking your blood pressure, temperature and oxygen levels and then we'll send you off to your family doctor." The nurse says and I watch those procedures take place as well.

Then we're being walked down the hall and escorted into another examination room. I kept tossing that number over in my head over and over again. A hundred and one pounds.

She sits with me, fingers drumming absent-mindedly over her knee. I look around the office and sigh hoping everything would work out with Sasha.

"Hi Sasha, nice to see you again....." I watch as a middle-aged woman comes through the door, file in hand and trails off noticing me in the chair next to her. "Oh, who's this?" She asks with a smile and Sasha smiles.

"I'm the boyfriend." I tell her, extending my hand and she gives it a shake.

"Well it's certainly been a long time since I've seen you Sasha." She says raising her eyebrows. "I'm Doctor Hahn."

"Nate, nice to meet you." I say and she smiles.

"I haven't seen you since the follow-ups with your concussion and broken nose." She says and Sasha nods. "How's skating been going?"

"Pretty good, I just won my national competition actually." She says and Doctor Hahn looks rather surprise by that.

"That's exciting, I see you're sixteen so you must be in your....sophomore year?" She asks and Sasha nods. "How's that been going?"

"It's alright." Sasha says with a shrug. "As good as high school can be I guess."

"True enough." She sighs looking over the pages in her chart. "Well I won't keep you long, your therapist recommended you for an anti-anxiety medication, is that correct?"

"Yes, that's what she told me." Sasha says.

"And it has to do with.....food and nausea?" She asks, checking over the sheets and Sasha nods again. "Well could you tell me a bit about it?"

"Well, I really have a hard time eating enough." Sasha says quietly. "I know I'm way under the number of healthy calories I should be taking in daily and that I'm not getting enough vitamins. My therapist says I don't feel like I can eat because I get anxious about throwing up or feeling sick?"

Doctor Hahn nods along with that and scribbles the information down in the chart.

"Well she's right on the nose with that." She says. "Sasha I don't want you to worry about this, we'll be putting you on a very low dosage."

"A low dosage of what?" She asks.

"Of a medication called Zoloft, it's known to increase mood, sleep, appetite and decrease panic attacks and lower anxiety." She says and Sasha nods. "We'll also put you on a few over-the-counter probiotics just to settle your digestive system and make it more regular."

"What are the side-effects with Zoloft?" I ask, giving Sasha's hand a squeeze. I didn't want to butt-in on this and I simply wanted to observe but I couldn't help myself. I knew that with medications for mental-health that even if there were issues in the mid-stage and getting better, that the end result was worth it. But if it seemed particularly dangerous I'd suggest her trying something else out.

"Well you have a very concerned boyfriend." She says and I feel momentarily embarrassed. "But he's right, it's good to know what you're getting into. I'm putting you on Zoloft because it has fairly mild side-effects and with the low dosage, I'm sure you'll never experience them. The possible side-effects are nausea, drowsiness, dry-mouth, trouble sleeping, diarrhea and increased sweating. If you really start to experience them, call the office and we'll change the dosage or put you on something different." Sasha nods at that and I relax hearing the relatively tame list of side-effects.

"I know this seems intimidating Sasha, but this is very important. I was looking over your hight and weight and you have the lowest BMI you've ever had." She continues and Sasha furrows her eyebrows.

"What does that mean?" Sasha asks.

"Well it has to do with how tall you are versus your weight, it's not always accurate however, some people aren't meant to fit the chart and that's perfectly alright. But Sasha I'm really quite concerned you're underweight. I've met your parents and I know your mother has a small build and that your whole family is rather fit, but even still, it's lower than we'd expect." Sasha nods and lowers her head.

"Where should I be?" She asks and Doctor Hahn sighs.

"At five-five? We'd ideally like to see you up over one-hundred and fifteen pounds." She says. "But I realize it's not healthy to gain that much weight and that you're quite petite in build. I'm not telling you to gain weight Sasha, I'd just like to see you start with eating three meals a day."

"I-I was worried about that." Sasha admits and sighs. "I'm just worried I'm not getting all the nutrients I'm supposed to."

"Exactly." Doctor Hahn says. "I just want you to feel healthy, not gain a bunch of weight. I'll also write down the name of a one-a-day multi-vitamin, that should help round you out a bit." Sasha nods a bit at that. "Any other questions for me?" Sasha quickly shakes her head.

"I don't think so." She says and Doctor Hahn nods.

"Alright, I'll ask you a few questions and then write you a form to go get your blood tested. If it all comes back clean, you'll be good to go." She says and Sasha nods. "Are you comfortable having Nate stay here while you answer these questions?"

"Of course, Nate know's everything." Sasha says without a moment's hesitation.

"Alright." Doctor Hahn says with a small chuckle. "If you're sure......Sasha, how often would you say you poop?"

"What?" Sasha immediately asks and I laugh a bit.

"Yeah okay......Sash, I'll just wait outside." I tell her and she sighs.

"Fine." She mumbles and I give her a kiss on the cheek. "See you soon."

I continue to laugh on my way out the door, and I close it behind me. Before I get too far away I can hear a small conversation on the other side of the door.

"So when did you start seeing him?" Doctor Hahn asks.

"A few months ago." Sasha responds.

"He's clearly very concerned about you if he's here with you today." She says and I smile.

"Yeah he's wonderful." Sasha says and I laugh a bit to myself.

"What ever happened to that friend you had when you were little, you used to talk about him all the time." She asks and I shake my head, knowing the answer.

"That's him." Sasha all but whispers and I lean on the wall with a sloppy grin on my face.

Yeah that is me, and I'm the luckiest guy on the planet.
