《Ice Queen》Chapter 42 ~ "Close your eyes"

Tonight is date night. I can barely sit still because I'm so excited, I've triple checked everything for tonight and I want it to be absolutely perfect.

I was really hoping she was alright after everything with her dad. She'd texted me this morning letting me know that she was accepting her offer so I assumed everything had gone the way she expected. I just hoped she wasn't bummed-out, I wanted this night to be amazing with Sasha and it would kill me to see her upset.

I'd changed my shirt about five times, I just couldn't seem to decide what the right colour was. I decided in the end to play it safe and just wear a plain white button-up. I hadn't dressed this nice in a long time and part of me felt excited that we'd get to experience it together.

I was early now, sitting outside her house in my car and trying not to get to nervous. I just really hoped she'd like everything I had planned.

I hear knocking on my window and nearly leap out of my skin when I see Nik standing next to my car door. He's standing with a pretty looking girl and I immediately turn off my car and hop out shutting the door.

"What are you doing out here?" Nik asks. He doesn't sound angry, just confused.

"Well I'm taking your sister out tonight but I'm really early-"

"Oh my god, you're Nate?!" I hear the girl standing next to him say and I nod. She squeals and runs over to give me a hug and I furrow my eyebrows at Nik, who just laughs at me.

"Carter this is my girlfriend, Grace." He says and suddenly my brain clicks into place.

"Oh of course, I remember Sasha talking about meeting you." I say and she nods.

"God that girl loves you to death, she told me all about you." She says and I find myself feeling oddly flattered.

"Right, back to my question." Nik says. "Why are you waiting out here?"

"I was just really early.....and really nervous." I admit and he laughs.

"She's been ready for over a half-hour, she's changed her clothes like fifty times and put her hair up and down more times than I can count. She's been all jumpy and fidgety today." I laugh a bit knowing I'd been the same way.

"And what the fuck are you nervous about?" He asks and I shrug. "She loves you, man up and go ring the doorbell, I'd do it for you but I owe someone a date." He says and Grace laughs kissing his cheek.

"It was really nice to meet you Nate." She says and gives me a small wave. The two of them walk over to Nik's car, but not before I hear him call out to me.

"Treat my sister right or I'll break your fucking knees!" He calls without turning around and Grace shoves him giving me an apologetic smile.

I take a deep breath and turn back, getting my flowers for Sasha before walking up to her house. I ring the doorbell and I hear quick footsteps on the stairs.

"-No Alex, I'll answer it!" I hear what sounds like Sasha yell.

"In your dreams little sis!" I hear Alex yell back and the door opens. Alex is on the other side and immediately steps out onto the deck with me, holding the door shut.

"Hi Carter." He says and I hear a bang from inside.

"Dammit Alex, open the door!" Sasha yells, followed by more banging.

"Just a second!" He calls back. "You're taking Sasha out?" He asks and I nod. "Be good to her, bring her home for eleven and no funny business."

"Alexi, otkroyte etu dver' seychas! Ostav' Neyta v pokoye i otpusti menya!" I hear Sasha start yelling sentences through the door in Russian and I just laugh a bit not knowing what she's saying.

"You have my word, home by eleven." I tell him and he nods.

"She's pretty pissed right now, she didn't want me to have this talk first." He says, keeping the door closed firmly. "She just yelled for me to leave you alone and let her out." I laugh a bit and he shakes his head. "Uspoykoysya, calm down!" He yells and the banging stops. With that he opens the door and I feel a smile spread over my face.

Sasha was wearing the tight, light blue dress she'd bought with Kate last week. Kate was certainly right about it looking good, it fit her like a glove, showed off her curves and beautiful legs. Her hair was swept up into a bun at the base of her skull and to complete the look she had on a strappy pair of heels.

A small necklace rests in the hollow between her collarbones, make-up flawlessly applied. She looked stunning. I couldn't remember myself feeling like this about someone before.

"Wow." I say quietly and she smiles.

"Is it too much?" She asks and I shake my head.

"No you're.....beautiful." I tell her, clearing my throat and she turns red.

"So are you." She says quietly, walking closer to me and I smile.

"These are for you." I tell her, passing her the flowers I'd gotten for her and she smiles.

"These are beautiful." She says quietly, looking at the bouquet. She gives me a hug that I gladly accept and I clear my throat stepping back when I realize her brother's been standing here the whole time.

"Alright have fun, be good." He says taking the flowers from Sasha. "I'll put these in water."

"Bye." Sasha says, and leans into my side.

I wave and put my arm around her shoulders, walking her back to my car. She smiles leaning into my side and I feel myself really start to get excited.

This was the thing I'd been planning for so meticulously for almost two months. My dream of going out on a real date with Sasha was finally coming true, she wanted to be here with me and that was all I wanted.

"So what are we doing?" She asks and I laugh a bit.

"Dinner." I tell her, kissing her temple. "Then I have something else planned, but it's a secret." She smiles a bit and gives me a nod.

"Sounds amazing." She says and walks around the other side of the car.

She seemed oddly.......alright. I honestly thought I'd get a messy phone call at some point today telling me she didn't want to go out tonight because she had too much going on. She seemed determined to talk with her dad and it seemed like it might have gone alright. She wouldn't be going back to skating if it wasn't.

But I didn't want to ask her about it, I wanted tonight to be stress-free for Sasha. She most-likely just wanted a normal night out and I was determined to give it to her.

"You seem like you're deep in thought." She says, reaching over and putting her hand on my knee. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine." I whisper starting the car. "Just thinking about you."

"Oh really?" She asks, sounding flattered. "How so?"

"Just how much I love you." I tell her and she gives me a grin that reaches her eyes. It wasn't exactly what I was thinking of granted, but it was always in the back of my mind.

"I love you too." She says quietly and I smile.

The rest of the drive is quiet, I look at her out of the corner of my eye seeing her smile. I rest my own hand over hers and give it a squeeze.

Soon enough we're at the restaurant and I race around to open her door for her. She laughs a bit and steps out taking my hand. I picked this place because it had lots of options, I wasn't even convinced Sasha knew what she wanted to eat half the time so I figured I had my bases covered.

The hostess shows us to our table and I watch Sasha take-in the restaurant. It was dark, low lighting and plenty of candles, the celling had white lights strung back and forth and it had easy jazz playing in the background. It felt personal, intimate.

Soon enough we're seated and I look at the beautiful girl sitting across the table. She reaches her hand out and I gladly take it in mine.

"Do you like it?" I ask and she nods.

"Nathan, it's beautiful." She says and I smile. "I love it, thank you."

"We haven't even eaten dinner Sash." I remind her and she shrugs.

"It's not the dinner part I'm interested in, it's going out with you." She tells me, giving my hand a squeeze. I find myself feeling instantly comforted by her words, she just wanted to spend time with me.

"Same here." I tell her quietly and her cheeks turn red again.

The two of us start looking over the menu and I feel almost overwhelmed by the choices. There was any dish you could imagine.

"What are you getting?" I ask and she shrugs.

"The chicken I think, with a garden salad." She says and I nod knowing I shouldn't have expected anything less. "What do you think you'll get?"

"Not sure....the pork maybe? It sounds alright." She nods and gives my hand a squeeze.

I really loved this, being out in the world with Sasha. Showing anyone and everyone that I loved her to the ends of the earth. Part of me hoped we could do this all the time, that I could take her out on more dates as we slowly moved into a more formal relationship.

"So what's the surprise you have planned?" She asks and I laugh.

"You'll have to wait and see." I tell her and she laughs.

"A man of mystery huh?" She teases and I laugh.

"There's all kinds of things you don't know about me." I tease and she rolls her eyes.

"That seems unlikely." She says and I sigh.

"You might be right." I tell her. "You're the only one who knows all my secrets."

"Well your secrets are safe with me." She says and I nod, really believing her. It was almost freaky how much I trusted Sasha. "And you know all of mine."

It was at moments like this that I know we really do love each other. That none of this is in my own head, that she thinks about me. I always feel this pit in my stomach when she says things like that, it's this indescribable feeling of needing someone.

Soon enough our food is on the table and she smiles digging in. I get so wrapped up in my own eating that when I look over, I can see Sasha pushing things around. She's eating it slowly, but she's actively taking her time to make it look like she's eating more than she is. I keep my mouth shut about it, knowing she probably didn't want to hear me bring it up again or for it to ruin the night. So I just watched her out of the corner of my eye, it almost looked like she was deep in thought.

"Baby." I say quietly, reaching my hand across the table. "Is everything okay?" She seems to snap out of her daze and nods quietly.

"Yeah I'm great." She says, putting her hand in my hand.

"You don't seem great." I tell her and she sighs.

"I don't want to talk about it right now." She mumbles. "I just want to have a good night with you."

I nod a bit and squeeze her hand, watching her eyes drop back to her dinner. I could tell something was definitely on her mind and not helping her talk about it was killing me. But I'd respect her wishes and wait until she wanted to tell me.

Once dinner's over I pay the check and lead her back to my car. Trying to think of something special to do with Sasha was hard, she didn't like food much, neither of us had many hobbies outside of skating and it was the middle of March making it far too cold to do anything outdoors. But I had thought of something, I just really hoped she'd like it.

As soon as we're there I stop the car and turn to look at her. "We're here." She furrows her eyebrows and gives me a strange look.

"What is it?" She asks with a slight smile and I laugh.

"You'll see." I tell her, and hop out of the car going around to her side to open her door again. "Close your eyes." I tell her and she smiles, humouring me and closing her eyes.

I walk her to the door of the small glass building and pull it open. She steps inside, heels clicking on the hard floor and I smile.

"Ready?" I whisper and she nods. "Alright, open your eyes in three, two, one." Her eyes open and instantly widen.

"Aw no way." She says and I nod.

I'd brought her to a large greenhouse open to the public, it showed off a variety of exotic plants and bright colours. Our moms used to bring us here all the time when we were little, it gave us an excuse to spend loads of time together.

"I forgot all about this." She says taking in all of the different things around us. "We used to have so much fun here." She says in an endearing tone and I nod. "Thank you." She whispers and I smile, excepting a hug from Sasha.

"That's not all." I tell her and she pulls back furrowing her eyebrows. "I have something for you."

"For me?" She asks and I nod.

"Yeah, I was digging around in one of my figure skating boxes and I found something I forgot all about." I say, finding it in my pocket. "It's the friendship bracelet you made for me when we were nine." I whisper, placing it in her palm.

Three beaded letters sit in the middle of a string of braid chord spelling out, B-F-F. All the beads are different shapes and colours making it incredibly unique.

Her eyes well up with tears as she looks at it, small fingers closing around the small bracelet.

"Oh Nathan." She manages to get out, before pressing her face into my chest in a hug.

Those were the most amazing days, the days that we got to have together. The days when we didn't even realize what we had or what we were.

"You don't know what this means to me." She sniffles and I smile, kissing the top of her head. "I love you."

"I love you too." I whisper. "Forever and always."
