《Sleep With Me | KNJ x Reader》Ch 34 | Guilt

"She lost a lot of blood and has a concussion, but she should be okay," the doctor smiles, earning a collective sigh of relief from everyone in the hallway. "Also, be gentle with her left side, she has two cracked ribs. What she needs now is rest; she's on some heavy painkillers and should wake up in a few hours."

"Oh thank god," Nanami exhales, sitting back in her seat; Jimin quickly cupping her hand in his. After you were rushed to the hospital, the doctors took you away for a thorough examination. You didn't need surgery but your head and thigh required quite a few stitches.

Namjoon's sitting on a bench with his elbows resting on his thighs, face buried into his palms; your dried blood still all over his hands and clothes. Tears of relief are flowing down his face while Jin rubs his back.

"Told you she'd be alright," Jin says playfully. "You know I'm always right."

Namjoon snorts as he wipes his tears, finding it impressive Jin can make him laugh at a time like this.

"Does she have any family we need to call?" the nurse asks, stepping from behind the counter.

"No," Nanami answers. "She's not very close with her parents."

Namjoon mentally kicks himself again. He hasn't asked enough about you, always making things about him. He has no idea what your relationship with your parents is like, yet you know about his entire family. However, he's surprised to hear that you're not close with them since you've previously traveled to South Korea as a family.

The nurse nods and writes something onto her notepad. "You guys can see her now, but please be quiet," she says softly. "It's 3am and there are some patients in the room next to hers."

Namjoon and Jin had made sure you were in the nicest part of the hospital, with the best doctors and staff. They initially didn't have room for another person in the executive wing but Jin was able to pull some strings.

"When she wakes up please let me know," the officer next to Jimin says. "I'll be right outside the door."

The officer isn't necessary for protection; Namjoon's got 4 of his body guards standing outside your room. He's only there to ask you questions when you wake up.

Hae-Ran had managed to escape, and so far the two men that were arrested aren't speaking. Namjoon has his men keeping a tight leash on the police too, knowing how powerful her father is.

The four of them slowly funnel into your room, trying to make as little noise as possible. Namjoon's throat tightens as he sees you sleeping on the bed, your chest slowly rising and falling. You seem almost peaceful; it doesn't even look like you're injured. They didn't hurt any part of your face, so the only things indicating a wound are the bandages around your head and wrists. There are purple bruises around your neck as well, but they're hard to see in the dimly lit room.

"You stupid bitch," Nanami mumbles to herself, tears streaming down her face as she sits on the couch next to you. "How dare you let that hideous cunt hurt you."

Jin and Jimin snort at her comment, slapping their hands over their mouths at the noise. Namjoon's not laughing though. He's inching closer to the bed, eyes glued to your face.

He's destroying himself on the inside. He thinks this is all his fault — that he didn't protect you like he should've. He gently traces his finger over the bandage on your wrist, tears still spilling over his lower lashes.

"I'm so sorry," he whispers.

"Don't do that," Jin says sternly, gripping Namjoon's shoulder. "This isn't anyone's fault besides Hae-Ran's. So don't even go there."

Namjoon's gaze slowly moves from your face to Jin's, not believing his words but nodding anyway.

"Also," Jin continues, "you need to shower and change."

"No," Namjoon responds immediately. "I'm not leaving h-"

"Namjoon I'm not asking you," he glares. "I'm telling you."

It's rare for Jin to bring out his hyung card this aggressively, catching Namjoon off guard.

"[Y/N]'s blood is all over you," he says a little softer. "You're going to scare her if she wakes up and sees you looking like this."

Namjoon looks down at his clothes, eyes widening at your dried blood covering his arms and chest.

"I had Mr. James bring you some clothes," Jin says to him. "You don't have to leave the hospital, but you do need to shower in another room. We don't want to wake her up."

Namjoon nods as Jin ushers him out the door, Mr. James waiting for him outside.

"He's beating himself up," Jin sighs as he walks back in.

"[Y/N]'s not going to blame him," Nanami says softly, still looking at your face. "But I understand why he feels guilty. I can't even imagine..." she trails off.

"I'm so glad she's okay," Jimin exhales into his palms. "Her giving us those hints is what saved her. She's amazing."

Nanami nods with pride. "That's my favorite bitch. The smartest and sexiest around."

"I'm going to head out," Jin says to them. "Bang PD knows the gist of it but I need to formally explain everything. The company is going to have to handle things with her father."

"Do you need me to go with you?" Jimin asks.

"No, stay with Nanami," he smiles. "She's just as much of a wreck as our leader. I'll text you if there's any updates."

"Thanks hyung," he nods.

About ten minutes after Jin had left, Namjoon comes trudging in the door with his eyes looking even more swollen. He's in a simple white t-shirt and black sweatpants, a sweatshirt in his hands if necessary.

He takes the loveseat on the other side of your bed, sitting across from Jimin and Nanami with you in between.

"How are you doing?" Nanami asks softly, trying not to wake you. You're deep in sleep due to the pain medication, so they aren't too worried about it.

"I'm fine," Namjoon mumbles as he looks at the ground. "As long as she's okay."

"Don't beat yourself up," Jimin frowns. "We can see you're doing it. Jin-hyung was right. The only problem here is Hae-Ran."

"I should've known this was going to happen though," Namjoon says shakily, resting his elbows on his knees. "She fucking poisoned me for crying out loud. I should have known she wouldn't leave just like that. You tell me not to beat myself up but I'm definitely at fa-"

Namjoon grunts as he feels a dull pain against his bicep. "What are you-"

"Shut the fuck up," Nanami grits, punching Namjoon again and making him wince in pain. He's not even sure how she got to him so fast. "I rode with her in the ambulance here. Do you know what the last thing she said before passing out was?"

His throat tightens as he looks at her.

Nanami swallows the lump in her throat before speaking, "'It's not his fault'."

The tears start flowing from his eyes again, his chest feeling like it's being crushed.

"So stop it," she says to him. "If you want what's best for her then you'll quit blaming yourself. You'll dedicate all your time and energy to helping her recover and catching that ugly piece of shit."

"She's right, hyung," Jimin smiles, walking over to squeeze his shoulder. "Just focus on [Y/N] for now."

Namjoon nods, wiping the tears from his face. "Thank you," he mumbles.

The two of them head back to their couch, their lids getting heavy as they lean on each other. Namjoon continues to stare at you as the other two fall asleep; he's feeling grateful that he gets to watch your chest rise and fall. He's thanking the universe you're still breathing.

He's taking in every feature of your face, marveling at the shape of your lips, the curve of your nose, the length of your lashes. His chest is filled with both affection and sorrow, remembering the sight he walked in on just hours earlier. He shakes his head, trying to push the thought away for now. He decides to just live in this moment, appreciating that you're right next to him.

After about an hour he feels himself losing the battle against fatigue, his head beginning to droop. He scoots his seat closer to your bed, gently cupping your hand in his. He places his other arm on the mattress, head resting on top of it. The sound of the diffuser coupled with your breathing slowly lull him to sleep.

Namjoon feels a pinch against his hand, instantly jolting him awake. He had fallen asleep, but barely; he's been waking up every 10-15 minutes at every noise. He looks up to see your hand twitching in his, your eyes fluttering, trying to open. A small groan escapes your lips, making the three of them jump from their seats.

"Oh my god," Nanami gasps, running for the door. "Nurse, she's awake!" she yells out to the staff.

Four different medical personnel come swarming into the room, ushering Namjoon to the back. Nanami stands at the end of the bed, gripping the railing.

"Miss [Y/N], can you hear me?" the doctor asks softly, your eyes slowly opening. Namjoon is behind the nurses but can see you pretty well thanks to his height. His chest feels like it's exploding when he sees the color in your eyes, relief washing over him.

You squint as you look up at the ceiling, adjusting to the lights. You give it a few seconds before you slowly scan the room, trying to take everything in.

"Miss [Y/N], can you hear me?" the doctor asks again. You slowly nod, eyes still groggily scanning around the room. They stop once they get to your best friend sobbing at the foot of the bed.

"Who are you?" you croak out, causing the room to tense. Nanami looks at you as though you've just shot her.

"I'm just kidding, you're ugly when you cry," you snort, wincing in pain, "oh- ouch."

"Doc, you can leave," Nanami grits through her teeth, gripping the bed frame in anger. "She's definitely just fine. Her awful personality is still there."

The whole room laughs and exhales in relief, all except Namjoon. He's just standing there, tears flowing down his face as he stares at you in awe. His chest swells at how proud he is. Proud of you. Proud to know you. Proud to be with you. He's floored by you and your resilience. You've been through hell and back and yet you're lying in a hospital bed cracking jokes.

The staff ushers everyone to the side as they sit you up, performing a standard routine used on patients with head injuries. For the most part you seem fine, but Namjoon's nervously kneading his thumbs into his palms, filled with anxiety. He knows you're aware of his presence, but you haven't looked his way once.

"Are you hurting anywhere specifically?" the doctor asks you.

"Just a pounding headache," you smile tightly. "Everything else is pretty tingly from the meds."

"Do you feel up to answering some questions from the police?" the nurse asks softly. "It's better for victims to be questioned as soon as they can so they don't forget any details."

Namjoon's stomach sinks as he hears her call you a victim. It's true, but putting it into words sends a sharp pain into his chest, making him shift on his feet.

"Can I have ten minutes?" you ask her, using your puppy dog eyes to your advantage.

"Of course you can," she giggles, standing up to walk to the door. "I'll tell him to come in after ten minutes."

"Thanks," you grin.

The room is silent as she walks out, leaving a heavy atmosphere between the four of you.

"Let's give them some time," Jimin says, dragging Nanami away from the end of your bed. She looks your way and you give her a small smile, letting her know you're fine.

"And please go home and shower," you smile. "You both look like shit."

"You're so fucking lucky you're in a hospital right now or I'd beat you myself," Nanami growls. "But okay, we really are going to leave. Call me if you need anything."

"Thanks Nans," you smile as she heads out the door, leaving you and Namjoon alone.

He's staring at the floor, trying to control his breathing. He has no idea where your head is at, imagining all the worst case scenarios right now.

What should I say?

Is she angry?

Is this too much for her?

Is she going to dump me? I can't even blame her if she does.

"Are you okay?" you ask softly, cutting his thoughts short.

His eyes snap up to yours, they're full of tears that are threatening to fall down his face at any second. "Why are you asking me that?" he asks, staring at you in shock. "You're the one who's hurt. I should be asking you that."

"The doctor already made sure I was okay," you say to him. "I'm asking if you're okay."

The tears begin flowing from his eyes, dripping down from his chin and onto the ground. The pain in his chest has been unbearable, guilt eating him from the inside out, and you can see it. "No," he answers honestly, his voice trembling. "No, I'm not okay." He's trying to stop himself from crying but it doesn't work. He bites into his lip as the sobs threaten to escape his throat.

You wince as you pick yourself up to scoot over in the bed. "Come here," you smile softly, patting the mattress next to you.

"I can't," he whimpers, trying to wipe his tears uselessly. "You're hurt."

"You're not going to hurt me," you assure him. "Please come here," your voice wavers as tears begin pouring out of your eyes as well.

He shakily moves toward you and crawls into the bed as gently as he can, making sure to steer clear of your thigh. He scoots down in the bed as he lies on his side, resting his head against your shoulder and wrapping his arms around your waist, avoiding your ribs. Your hands wrap around his shoulders as you both begin to quietly sob into each other's arms.

Namjoon bawls as he grips your hospital gown so tightly his knuckles turn white, stopping himself from gripping your injured body. You cry softly as you place gentle kisses on top of his head intermittently, holding him as tightly as your exhausted body will allow.

"I'm so sorry," he whimpers between sobs. "I c-can't help but think if I h-hadn't gotten there in t-"

"But you did get there in time," you smile against his hair. "Thank you for saving me."

Namjoon continues to sob onto your shoulder as you gently run your hand through his hair, wiping his tears every once in a while. He's still resting against your shoulder as you place your hand on his face, delicately caressing his cheek as he begins to calm down.

You both lay there for a few minutes, both lightly smoothing your thumbs over each other's skin.

Namjoon gently squeezes your hip, nestling himself more into you.

"I love you," he exhales shakily. "All I could think about was how I wasn't able to tell you that."

Your heart swells at the broken man in your arms, a million emotions trying to pour out of you at once. Your hand runs back through his hair as you give the top of his head another gentle kiss.

"I love you too."
