《The Fighter》Chapter 7

The next week I went to the gym almost every day. I practiced my punching for half an hour and then ran for an hour. Dante went with me every time and Titus was there almost every day as well for his second practice.

Kate never let me be alone unless it was during the day and I wasn't leaving the house. I could tell she was worried about me, especially when she realized I had been locking my room and the front door when she was gone.

Dante spent his mornings before work here with me, and Kate spent the afternoons with me. I felt like I was being babysat, but was also grateful they all cared enough to make sure I was okay.

Finally, it was a day before Mason's birthday party. Both Kate and I were invited and I was surprised Titus was throwing one at all. I had been talking to Titus more often and he had even cracked a few jokes towards me.

Kate had forced me to the mall because she wanted to find a dress for Thanksgiving. She was driving five hours away to go meet Dante's Mother and she was a nervous wreck, I told her she still had a few weeks and she told me she needed to be prepared now.

"Which one is more conservative," She said holding up a white long-sleeved dress and a purple dress which was tight but showed less cleavage.

"The purple one, but add like a cardigan," I said and she nodded her head. She then gasped and looked at me.

"You need this for the party!" She showed me an orange long sleeve dress with slightly puffy sleeves and it went just above mid-thigh.

"It is a five-year-old's birthday party," I said to her and she handed me a medium in the dress.

"And Titus will be there," She said and I gave her a look.

"So what," I said, pretending I didn't care.

"I see the sex eyes you give each other," She said to me and I looked at her shocked.

"We don't give each other sex eyes," I said blushing as an older lady looked and glared at me.

"You do!" She said,

"When?" I challenged and she crossed her arms and looked at me.

"Every day we are at the gym, especially when he is on top of you during training," she said as she went to check out buying both her dress and the one she wanted me to wear.

"You don't have to buy that," I said and she just smirked at me.

"I bought it for you so now you have to wear it tomorrow," She said and I groaned.

"Fine, but now you have to go with me to find a birthday present," I said, pulling her to the toy shop. I looked around for a while and I saw a black jeep which you could control with a remote.

"Can five-year-olds use remotes?" I asked, looking at it, and Kate nodded her head.

"I am sure Titus can help anyways, he is very good with his hands I am sure," She said, winking at me and I elbowed her to knock it off. We then went home where I wrapped the present and then went to bed excited for tomorrow.

I woke up to my phone ringing. I looked at the time and it was only 8 am. I answered without even checking to see who it was.

"Hello?" I said, and a deep voice shocked me.

"Hi Quinn, I know it is super early but my mom has a stomach bug and she was supposed to bake the cake for the party today. I am heading to practice with Mason and then I was going to set up for the party. Would you be able to buy or make a cake and I could pay you back and come pick you up on the way," Titus said. I was surprised he thought to call me, but I was also slightly excited that he did.

"Yeah, what kind of cake, and how big?" I asked him, and he sighed in relief.

"He likes chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and enough to feed about 12 people, thank you so much you are a lifesaver," Titus said.

"It is no problem, I will see you at 10:30," I said, and he said goodbye before we hung up. I got out of bed and hopped in the shower. I got out and I put some product in my hair and I put on a little bit of makeup. I threw on a sweatshirt and sweatpants before walking down the street to the grocery store.

Once I got there I realized they literally didn't have a cake section. I swore under my breath before grabbing two cake boxes, and some cans of chocolate frosting. I also grabbed some green and blue frosting to decorate with.

Once I got home I made two of my 9 x 13 pans of cake so I had enough time to let them cool before frosting. Once they were done and cooled I added chocolate frosting in between layers and I added a green border to the bottom of the cake.

I then wrote out "Happy 5th Birthday Mason!" on the cake using the blue frosting. I put the cake in the box and by the time I was done, it was 10. Titus was picking me up at 10:30. I ran to my room and put on the orange dress, some perfume, and a gold necklace.

As I was zipping up my boots there was a knock on my door. I opened it up and Mason was in a blue dress shirt and black jeans, with his black coat. Titus had on a white shirt, jeans, and a leather jacket. Both of their hair was gelled back and they looked so identical.

"Happy Birthday!" I said to Mason leaning down to get a hug, and he jumped into my arms and I squeezed him.

"I am a whole hand old now," He said to me and I smiled.

"You are getting so big, I can barely lift you," I said and he giggled.

"My cast barely fit in my shirt," He said, lifting his broken arm and I smiled at him.

"But it did, so that is all that matters," I said as I put him down. I walked over to the kitchen and Titus followed me.

"Did you make this?" He asked me shocked and I blushed and nodded my head.

"The store near me doesn't make cakes I guess," I said to him.

"It looks incredible," He said and Mason walked over.

"I want to see!" He said and Titus lifted him up and Mason gasped.

"Is this for me?" He asked and I nodded my head.

"I am ready to go!!" Mason said excitedly to his father who laughed at him.

Titus grabbed the cake and I grabbed Mason's present. I locked the door behind me and we made our way to the car. I buckled Mason up as Titus put the cake in the trunk. We arrived at the gym and I looked at Titus with a questioning glance and he shrugged his shoulders.

"He wanted it here," Titus said as he parked the car. I helped Mason out of the car as I grabbed his gift. I held onto his hand and we walked with Titus trailing behind us with the cake. I walked into the gym and it had blue and green streamers everywhere and balloons.

"Wow, it looks so good!" I said to Mason who was bouncing with excitement. I put the present down on one table and Titus put the cake down on the other. Mason ran up to Coach who was talking to three of the guys I have noticed in the gym before. Kate and Dante walked in and Kate hugged me before they went over to say hi to Mason.

"I should probably get him some friends his age," Titus said to me and I smiled at him.

"He will meet some next year in school, it won't hurt him interacting with adults," I said and Titus smiled at me.

"He already wants to start boxing," Titus said, watching Mason tell Kate a story that he was getting into.

"I could see it," I said to Titus, knowing how much Mason adored his father.

"I just don't want him to ever get hurt," Titus said to me as Mason played with one of his cars running into the office.

"He is a tough kid, he will be fine even if he does box," I said to Titus who looked at me with a soft look in his eyes. We locked eyes for a moment when we were interrupted by Mason who ran over to me, he pulled my hand so I was down to his ear level.

"Do you have a hair thing?" He whispered and I nodded my head, knowing he was talking about a bobby pin.

"Why?" I whispered back.

"I dropped my car down the vent again," He said and I smiled at him.

"What are you two whispering about," Titus said laughing at me and I handed the bobby pin to Mason and he ran away.

"What evil things are you teaching my son?" Titus asked with a smile on his face.

"I may or may not have taught him how to pick a lock the first day I met him," I said and Titus laughed.

"You are joking right?" Titus said and I shook my head, with a guilty smile.

"I did it!!!!!" Mason ran out with the vent opening and the car. Titus looked at me with a look of disbelief.

"You turned my five-year-old into a criminal," Titus said and I laughed and went to make sure Mason put the vent gate back.

"Nice job," I said high fiving him and he helped me put the gate in place. As we were leaving Kate walked into the room with wide eyes and shut it behind her.

"What's up?" I asked her and she looked at Mason and shook her head.

"Hey Mason, let's make a thank you card to Dad for the birthday party!" I said, grabbing some markers and printer paper folding it in half. He ran over and started to draw right away, I walked over to Kate.

"Jason just showed up, hand in hand with Mason's Mom," Kate said with wide eyes.

"I didn't think she was part of Mason's life," I said with wide eyes and Kate looked over to make sure Mason wasn't paying attention.

"With Titus's reaction, I don't think she is," Kate said and I nodded my head. I heard screaming and Mason looked up with wide eyes.

"Who was that," Mason said, walking up to me to hold my hand. We heard something loud and Mason held on tighter and I picked him up.

"I am scared," He said, and I looked at him.

"How about you stay here with Kate and I will make sure everything is alright," I said to him and he didn't respond.

"You know how to fight?" He asked me, and I nodded my head.

"Remember I won my last one?" I said to him and he finally nodded his head, and I set him down to walk over to Kate.

I opened up the door and in the entranceway of the gym was Jason smirking while holding a girl who looked to be about 24. She was blonde and in a black dress which practically showed her boobs. Her hair was in a messy bun and she was wearing makeup that was all over her face. She was either drunk or high and her brown eyes were bloodshot. I could tell she was dressed from the night before

I looked around and Titus was standing by Coach who was holding him back with one hand, and Dante was standing near them. A chair had been tossed to the side and I could feel the hostility in the air. The rest of the guys had tense looks on their faces except one who was in the middle of the room standing with a bloody face.

"Oh look the party really is here, all we need is Megan's child it will be a whole fiesta," Jason said as he smirked at me, eying my body in the dress I was wearing.

"David how the fuck could you tell this prick where the party was," Dante said to the man in the middle of the room.

"He gave me $3,000 I don't get money fighting like King does," David said, spitting out blood towards Titus.

"You need to go now," I said to Jason and Megan. It was very obvious that Titus was ready to beat his ass, and they weren't welcomed.

"No, he wants to see my child," Megan said in a whiny voice and Jason wrapped his arm around her waist.

"You haven't seen him since you left him five years ago to the date," Titus said to her, and she whimpered.

"I wasn't ready, Titus, I was only 19," Megan said and Titus looked like he was ready to explode.

"I was 20 and living paycheck to paycheck but I still managed without you. And you haven't been sober a day since you gave birth and you signed away your legal rights. So no you don't get to see my child," Titus said and I could feel his hatred for Mason's mother radiating off of him.

"This is his birthday and you are being selfish. You need to leave now," I said, sounding firmer this time.

"Who are you? The Step Mom?" Megan said, laughing at me as she eyed me up and down. Jason laughed.

"No, Step Mom's don't get themselves felt up behind a bar," Jason said looking at me, and this time Titus exploded. It took Coach, Dante, and two other men to hold him back. I was done with this shit. I went over to David and I kicked his leg.

"Get out now," I said, and he could tell I wasn't playing and he got on his feet and left. I walked over to Megan and I grabbed her wrist and I dragged her out of the gym and pushed her onto the sidewalk.

"You can't do this!!" She screamed and I turned to her and I glared.

"You step back on this property and I call the police," I said and she went wide-eyed. I then went inside and turned to Jason who grabbed my wrist roughly so I punched him in the face so hard he stumbled backward.

"You will never touch me again, so leave before I kick your ass and we have a nice story about you getting beat up by a 'weak defenseless girl' before your match with Titus," I said and he spit at my feet before leaving, promising us all that we would regret that.
