《The Fighter》Chapter 3

The next few weeks had gone by in a blur. I had been picking up more books to edit just to make some extra cash to prepare for the holidays now that it was November. Kate and Dante spent every moment together and she was rarely around. They had dragged me to the gym a few times a week with them but I never ran into Titus or little Mason again.

Finally, Dante told us he has another fight to bring us to. I at first didn't want to go but knowing that I would be potentially seeing Titus was enough to get me dressed in the jeans, white tank top, and red flannel Kate had handed me. I threw on a coat and we were off, butterflies jumping in my stomach.

As we walked down the stairs I could feel the adrenaline rushing as we entered the stadium with everyone screaming in excitement. We took our seats and this time they were in the middle of the row and as close as you could get.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to fight week!!!! Our challenger today comes all the way from Australia. At 6'3 and weighing 209 lbs please welcome Jaxon Ridley," The announcer said and there were a few boos but overall people liked this man. He walked out and he seemed sure of himself. He had tan skin and bleach blonde hair and brown eyes.

"And for our champion standing at 6'5 and weighing 200lbs please welcome Titus King," He said and out walked Titus. His hands were wrapped in black tape and he had on black shorts. Behind him, I noticed Uncle Coop who was holding Mason's hand. Mason was wearing a shirt that said King in black on the back. Mason's eyes widened as he saw me.

"Quinn!!!!!" He ran over, climbing into my arms for a hug. Coop chased after him and he looked at me.

"His seat is next to you, do you mind watching him?" Coop said quickly and I nodded my head and I smiled at him. Mason sat next to me and he was so tiny in the seat.

"Go Daddy!!!!!" He said as the match started. I could see Titus calculating his appointment as Jaxon did the same. Jaxon was jumping slightly as if trying to stay pumped and Titus was as still as possible. They were at a stalemate.

Titus finally made the first move punching Jaxon, who retaliated by punching Titus in the eye. Titus then used this moment to uppercut Jaxon and down he went KOed right away. The crowd went wild, as this was the fastest match they had seen.

Mason crawled into my lap and stood up cheering for his father's victory! He hugged me in excitement and I watched as Titus was declared the winner and Titus walked past us, sending a small wave to Mason before walking towards the back.

"Stay with me," I told Mason who was itching to see his father and he nodded his head, watching the crowd start to move.

"I have to stay with him," I told Kate who smiled at Mason and nodded her head.

"We can wait," she said before Dante grabbed her hand and pulled her to his uncle.

"That was so fast!" Mason said to me, sitting back in my lap after all the excitement.

"I know, it was a powerful punch huh?" I said and he smiled.

"I want to go see Dad," Mason said, standing up pulling me with him.

"Coop said to wait," I said to him, but Mason was so excited he didn't hear me. I held onto his hand tightly as he pushed through the crowd. I was honestly afraid of losing him. I felt him fall down and I quickly looked down and someone had knocked him in the head with something.

I picked him up quickly, afraid he would be unseen and trampled. I looked at his face and he had a small bump with a little cut on his forehead.

"Are you okay?" I asked him and he nodded.

"I am tough like Daddy," he said, and I could tell he was trying not to cry, I sighed and looked at him.

"You have to be careful," I said to him and he looked at the crowd and realized it wasn't safe to turn back now to our seats.

"Just keep going straight back," he told me, and I adjusted so I could hold him more comfortably. I headed down the hallway that Titus had appeared from and we finally broke through the crowd enough for me to not have to push through people. I came to a door and I opened it up.

Inside Titus was sitting there holding an ice pack to his eye. He was shirtless and he was covered in sweat. His hands were still wrapped and he looked up at us in surprise.

"Dad!!" Mason said, and I put Mason down as he ran up to his Dad. Titus put down the ice pack and he lifted his son up and he gave him a big hug.

"I thought you were supposed to wait for Coach Coop," Titus said to his son.

"I had Quinn with me," he said and Titus looked up as if noticing me for the first time.

"I tried to get him to wait, he then fell and got a bump on his head," I explained and Titus looked at his son's forehead in concern.

"Quite the bump huh," Titus said, sitting down holding the ice pack to Mason's head much to Mason's dismay.

"I am fine," Mason insisted, but Titus gave him a stern look and Mason sighed but let Titus keep the ice pack on his head.

"I just wanted to make sure he made it safe, I will go now. Nice job tonight," I said awkwardly, feeling like I was interrupting a moment between father and son. Mason's eyes went wide and he looked at me.

"Don't go! We need to get donuts!" He said, and my face flushed as I let out a small smile.

"It is too late for donuts," Titus said and Mason frowned.

"But it is the perfect time for ice cream, only if you keep this ice on your head," Titus said and Mason smiled.

"And Quinn can come?" He asked and Titus looked at me.

"If she has no other plans," He said and I shook my head.

"I can come," I said and Mason ran over to me and hugged my legs, still holding the ice to his head.

"I have to let Kate and Dante know," I said to both Mason and Titus.

"Mason, why don't you go with Quinn while I get showered and changed," Titus said to his son who nodded his head. I grabbed Mason's hand and we headed back out to the stadium.

I saw Coop, Kate, and Dante talking and I headed over to them. Mason held my hand tightly as his other hand held the ice up to his head. As Coop noticed us he frowned at Mason holding ice to his head.

"What happened?" He asked Mason and Kate smirked at me, and Dante smiled.

"Battle wound," I said ruffling Mason's hair.

"Are you Kate?" Mason asked Kate who leaned down to him, using her teacher charm.

"I am, you must be Mason," She said and he nodded his head.

"You and Dante can go. Quinn is going with me and Dad for ice cream," he said and Kate smiled knowingly up at me and I blushed.

"Okay, have fun!!" Kate said, giving Mason a high five before standing up to look at me. She winked at me before saying goodbye to Coop, grabbing Dante's hand and leaving.

"Okay I am heading out too, goodnight kid, and Quinn it was nice to see you again," he said to me and I smiled at him. Mason and I headed back towards Titus and once we walked in the room Titus was shirtless and freshly showered in jeans.

I tried not to stare as he put on deodorant and then threw on a long sleeve t-shirt. He then put on a jacket and he walked over to Mason and took the ice away, he closely examined the cut and then threw the ice in the trash.

"Coat and hat," Titus said firmly and Mason ran into the other room to grab it.

"Thank you for looking out for him, usually he stays with my Mom but she had something come up so I had to bring him," Titus said and I nodded my head.

"It was no problem at all," I said with a small smile. Titus put on a leather jacket and Mason ran into the room trying to zipper his coat. Titus leaned down and helped him and then he grabbed his hand.

"Ready?" he asked Mason who nodded his head. I walked over and Mason held out his other hand to me and I grabbed it tentatively meeting Titus's eyes after he looked down at his son. We walk over to an exit and it surprisingly leads to a parking lot.

We headed over to an SUV which was black and really nice. Titus unlocked the car and then opened up the backseat and Mason climbed in. As I watch him put on Mason's seatbelt it is strange to watch him so instinctively be a father after beating a guy to unconsciousness moments before.

I slid into the passenger seat and I put on my seatbelt, shivering from the cold. Titus climbed in and as he turned on the car the heat blasted into the air and a loud rap song started to play and Titus turned down the volume.

I look over at Titus and I see a bruise starting to form on his eye. He buckled his seatbelt and looked at his son in the mirror before pulling off. I looked at the time and I noticed it was almost 11 and as we pulled up to the ice cream store it was closed.

"Are you serious!!" Mason groaned in the back, Titus looked at him and I can tell he felt guilty.

"We can make our own sundays!" I say to Mason trying to fix the situation.

"How?" Mason said, still pouting in the back.

"There is a 24-hour store a block away from here, we can buy the ingredients," I offered to Titus who nodded his head before driving to the store with my directions.

Once Titus parked in the parking lot I hopped out of the car and Titus helped Mason out of his car seat. We enter the store and I lead us to the freezer aisle.

"What ice cream flavor do we want?" I ask Titus and Mason.

"Cookies and cream," they both said and I just smiled at them, laughing at how similar they are. I grabbed some whipped cream, and I then walked over to the peanut butter section where they keep ice cream supplies. Mason's eyes widened at the different options and he leaned forward to select them.

He grabbed cherry's, sprinkles, chocolate sauce, and chocolate chips, all of the supplies being handed to Titus. We headed to check out and when we went to pay both Titus and I reached for our wallets.

"It's fine I got it," Titus said to me and I hesitated before seeing the look he gave me and I put my wallet away. I picked up the bag full of ice cream supplies and I handed it to Mason who wanted to carry it.

Titus scooped up Mason, causing Mason to giggle, and he took a hold of the shopping bag as he got Mason into the car. I looked over at the duo and realized how alike they looked. Titus's nose was slightly crooked from having it broken in the past but their facial features were so similar to each other it was as if the only thing that Mason had gotten from his mother was his blonde hair.

We then headed to Titus's apartment which was about 10 minutes away from mine. We stopped in front of a huge building and I looked up in shock. It looked like a really nice hotel on the outside and had almost 20 floors. Titus parked the car and we headed to the elevator. He then unlocked the door and turned on the lights and Mason ran into the kitchen as Titus took off his shoes.

The apartment was more like a condo and was beautiful. There was a giant living room with a black sectional couch with a tv. The kitchen was nice with brand new marble countertops and a table for eating.

"Mason come here and take off your shoes and coat," Titus said firmly and Mason listened. I took off my shoes and jacket as well. Mason ran over to the table excited to eat. Titus stopped and handed me the bag and I looked up at him.

I could feel his heat next to me and I could smell his cologne which was a mixture of pine and amber which was an intoxicating scent when mixed together. I left, trying to not linger too long and I put all of the supplies on the table.

Titus walked over and he took out the bowls and spoons, and I handed him the ice cream and he opened it up and he scooped out a good amount for Mason and then handed it to him.

I opened up the toppings as Titus scooped out some more into two bowls. I watched as Mason poured on some sprinkles, Titus stopping him before he poured too much. He then added a handful of chocolate chips, a good amount of chocolate sauce, and then two cherries.

"We are missing something," I said before handing Titus the whipped cream.

"Can I make your sundaes?" Mason asked, as Titus took the whipped cream and sprayed it in Mason's bowl. Titus nodded his head, as I handed him the two other bowls of ice cream. Mason threw an assortment of ingredients in our bowls before he handed it to us and I took a seat across from Mason and Titus at the head of the table.

I took a bite of my ice cream as Mason watched my reaction to make sure I liked it. It was good, as I expected with the number of good ingredients, and I gave him a thumbs up.

"You should be a chef," I said to Mason who took a bite and he nodded his head in agreement. I looked over and Titus was silently eating his ice cream just watching his son carefully. Titus was so quiet it was kind of surprising.

"Are we going to the gym, tomorrow dad?" Mason asked Titus who shook his head.

"Nanny Marie is watching you while I go to the gym," Titus said to Mason who just nodded his head in agreement.

"Can I go next time?" Mason asked Titus, and I could tell Titus was trying to say no but couldn't bring himself to actually say it.

"Maybe, it depends how busy it's going to be," Titus said to Mason who turned his attention to me.

"Are you a fighter too?" He asked me, and Titus smirked as if hiding back a laugh.

"No, my friend Dante is and I just go with him sometimes," I said to Mason who nodded his head.

"Coach's nephew Dante? Is he your boyfriend," He said, and I laughed.

"No he is my friend Kate's boyfriend, you remember Kate?" I said to him and Mason nodded his head, he seemed happy about that for some reason.

"So do you have a boyfriend?" Mason asked me, and I blushed.

"Enough personal questions Mase," Titus said firmly and Mason just smiled at him.

"Dad doesn't have a girlfriend," Mason said to me, and I looked over at Titus who was shocked by his son's boldness, I felt my cheeks redden as I realized Mason was trying to set us up with each other.

"Why don't you show Quinn your cars?" Titus said to Mason as he took his last bite of ice cream.

"Sure!" Mason replied, standing up as he grabbed my hand and pulled me down the hallway. I noticed there were three doors. One was a bathroom with a little stool near the sink, the other was a master bedroom in which I could only see grey walls, a tan floor, and a black bed.

I was pulled into Mason's room which had grey walls and a twin bed with light blue sheets on it. I noticed there were some pictures in his room and it was him and Titus in one and him and an older woman who looked like Titus in another. She had blue eyes and dyed blonde hair. She seemed to be about 50.

Mason pulled me over to the corner where his cars were neatly lined up in a pile. He had all different sorts of cars in different colors.

"Wow, you have so many," I said to him and he nodded proudly.

"This one is my favorite!" He said, showing me a black jeep wrangler. I took it in my hands and it was pretty cool.

"It is super nice," I said to him, and he showed me a ramp he had to slide the cars down. About five minutes into us playing Titus knocked on the door.

"Time for bed, kid," He said and Mason groaned.

"Go brush your teeth or else I will have Nanny Marie come watch you when I go to bring Quinn home," he said and that got Mason running out of the room. I stood up and walked towards the kitchen with Titus. He had put everything away and had put the dishes in the sink.

"Let me do the dishes since I am the one who came up with the idea," I said walking over to the sink.

"You don't have to," Titus said, but I ignored him and I grabbed his sponge and soap and started to wash them. Titus grabbed a towel and I passed him a dish and he dried it for me. By the time we were done Mason came back out in dinosaur pajamas.

"I am ready!" He said and I dried my hands and Titus put the last bowl away. I walked over and I put on my coat and shoes. Mason was struggling with his zipper so I leaned down and I helped him. I looked up and Titus was waiting to put on his hat watching me carefully.

We walked to the SUV and I gave directions to my apartment. We drove listening to music in silence and I looked in the back and Mason was passed out.

"I could have just gotten a ride home, I am sorry to keep him out so late," I said to Titus, who looked in the back.

"You are underestimating how stubborn he is," Titus simply said and I laughed.

"I wonder where he gets that from," I said, instantly regretting that little statement because Titus and I barely knew each other Titus just smiled at me and shook his head laughing. We pulled into my apartment complex and I cringed at how run down it looked. It was only two stories and the outside of each building was falling apart.

"Thank you for the ride home and the ice cream," I said to Titus who gave me a simple nod. I walked towards my apartment going up the stairs to the second floor. I was relieved when I realized I was alone so I didn't have to answer Kate's many questions she would surely have.
