《Playing With the Rich Boys | ✓》Chapter Twenty-Six - A Secret Admirer

I nearly ran into him as I made my way to my locker that morning. His hair was disheveled with stray strands in every direction, his eyes surrounded by dark puffy rings. His normally immaculate uniform was wrinkly and the tail of his shirt bobbed as he walked.

"What?" He practically yelled when I narrowly managed to dart out of his way. His brows were furrowed, lines deeply etched into his forehead. His expression softened slightly along with a flash of recognition. "Just watch where you're going."

Funny, coming from the guy with his head down as he walked down the hallway. Against my better judgement, I followed him to his locker.

"Logan," I began. He dropped his backpack into the locker and turned to face me. He looked even worse up close. "How are you doing?" I asked, with absolutely no preface, referring to the events of that night.

"I'm fine," he replied gruffly.

"Ok. Well, I'm here...if you need to...talk." I waited for a moment, but he didn't reply. "Ok, I'll see you around," I said, turning on my heel to get back to my locker.

We weren't friends by a long shot, but I couldn't imagine many people knew about what was happening with him. Since I'd already managed to get myself tangled up in it, the least I could do was be a friend when he needed.

I punched in the combination for my locker and the door opened. A small envelope drifted out and landed in front of me. I put my bag away and picked up the envelope, peeling it open.

Daisy,

Your smile lights up my day

From,

Your secret admirer

My cheeks flushed with heat and I quickly set the note down in my locker, looking around me for who it could've been. I didn't recognise the handwriting and I didn't think there was anyone I interacted with that would leave me a note.

"What the hell is this?" Logan reached into my locker and snatched the note.

"Hey! Give it back!" I exclaimed, trying to grab it back. It was so embarrassing. I couldn't bear for another soul to see it. He held it up high above his head and it was hopeless even when I jumped. He could barely contain his laughter as he read it.

He started howling with laughter, doubling over momentarily before re-reading the note.

"I'm glad it brightened your day. Now you should stop in case the person who left it sees you laughing."

"You're too kind." He stifled back another laugh and straightened his face, handing the note back to me. "Who the fuck leaves notes in a locker? Your smile lights up my day?" He rolled his eyes. "This is just too bad," he laughed.

So much for being the grinch mere moments before. "So who is this fool?" Logan grinned.

"Maybe they'd rather be anonymous. You know? Given the whole note situation..." Just verbalizing that thought sent me PTSD flashbacks to grade six me.

"Doesn't stop it from being a garbage note. Surely this is not meant to impress you?" He looked at me, just in time to catch my face reddening. As if I could admit to anyone that the note actually made my heart flutter a little.

"You'd think after fake dating Holden you'd be immune to this."

"Ok whatever Logan. We have class in ten."

"I believe we have PE first, see you then."

I rolled my eyes and grabbed my sport uniform from my bag. The first bell had rung and students slowly began filing into the hallway. No one seemed to spare me a look, let alone have enough time to write me a note.

Just as I was getting ready to go to homeroom, Elaine came tearing through the hallway, huffing and puffing. "I slept in!" She screeched, coming to a dramatic halt at her locker. Evidently, because she hadn't even had time to brush out her hair. "You look chuffed this morning," she commented, entering the combination for her locker.

"Someone left a note in my locker," I replied.

"Show me!" She squealed, dumping her bag in her locker.

"Keep it down," I hissed.

"Sorry," she mouthed, opening the note.

Her face practically lit up when she finished reading. "Finally! Yes! Someone has noticed how cute you are!" Now she was making me blush. "So, do you know who it is?"

"Not a clue."

The second bell went, which meant we were both officially late for homeroom.

"I need to go, I'm already late!" I exclaimed.

"Don't think I'm dropping this. This interrogation will continue at lunch."

--

"Maybe it's him, what's his name?" Logan said, gesturing to the guy jogging twenty metres in front of us.

"Do I look like I know?" I exclaimed, barely managing to breathe while running, let alone respond to his questions. The first twenty minutes of the lesson was 'conditioning'. The teacher was intent on having us run laps to prepare for cross country in the upcoming weeks.

"Are we thinking some guy who's actually spoken to you before, or are we thinking some random who just noticed you and decided now that you and Holden are toast, it's his chance?"

"I'm gonna go with an unlikely on the second option." Sure, people noticed me when they thought I was with Holden, but I seriously doubted any guy would of his free will ask me out because he thought I was cute.

"And why's that?"

"I don't think I'm attractive enough to warrant a secret admirer," I laughed, trying to brush it off.

"Come on, where's the positive self-talk? You're not heinous," he winked.

"Okay wow. I'm flattered," I said sarcastically.

"Ok, so if you think it's someone you talk to. Who do you talk to?"

I was drawing an even bigger blank on this than the previous question. "Holden," I began.

"He doesn't count."

"Parker, you...Wesley."

"You're buddies with Wesley?"

"He's my lab partner in bio," I explained.

"Hm. I think it's him. He seems like the type to write garbage ass notes."

"Rude!"

"Defending him, hey? I think I smell romance," he said dramatically.

"Logan!" The teacher yelled from the front. "Pick up the pace."

"Catch ya later," he said, sprinting off.

It couldn't be Wesley...could it? I mean, he did offer me tickets to the game on Friday, but then again, friends do that kind of thing.

Regardless of who it was, it was hard to deny. Getting the note did excite me a little. It also got me thinking of all the wild possibilities and where this could possibly go.

Almost enough to distract me from the fact that Parker hadn't spoken to me at all since the gala.

Almost.

--

Just before first break, I had to get changed back into my normal uniform just in case a teacher called me out for it later. Unluckily, I ran into Clarissa and her friends there. In the middle of a conversation.

"I know. Did you see her this morning?" Courtney laughed, applying another layer of lipgloss.

"Who was she busy shagging last night?" Clarissa smirked, looking at me as I was about to enter a cubicle to get changed.

"She slept in okay? I think you guys seriously need to stop. I don't know what the hell actually happened with you and Elaine, but you need to get over it. Or just stop being so venomous. What are you trying to accomplish anyway? You're more hung up on her than on your ex," I groaned. I walked off before she had the chance to continue the conversation.

They made my blood boil. Girls are meant to be out here supporting girls, and instead, these girls were some of the people I wanted to avoid the most. I got changed in a cubicle but waited until I was sure their voices had left the bathrooms before leaving.

"What took you so long dude?" Elaine asked, shoveling a spoonful of yoghurt into her mouth, when I finally reached our table in the cafeteria. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Clarissa giving me the evils.

"Uh...nothing." Surely Elaine had gotten the message when Clarissa poured the punch bowl on her.

"You sure?" She replied.

"Yeah."

"So...back to the note," she grinned, leaning forward onto the table, resting her chin on her hands.

"Logan's already hassled me about this?"

"Since when were you friends with Logan?" She asked with disdain. Then I recalled the incident after Stephanie's yacht party.

"Oh, we're not really friends. He's in my sport class and he happened to see the note this morning."

She nodded slowly, obviously still doubting me. Thankfully she didn't push me any further.

"So who do you think lover boy is?" She grinned. "Or lover girl? I don't discriminate," she chirped.

"Not a clue."

"Weren't you and Wes hitting it off?"

"No!" I denied. "Although, he did invite me to the game on Friday night. He's got two tickets. Wanna come with me?"

"And ruin your date? No way."

"It's not a date!" I exclaimed. "Besides, there are two tickets. What the hell will I do with the second one?"

"I hate third wheeling," she repeated.

The bell tolled and we filed off back to our lockers.

That was when I found the second note.

I'd love to get to know you more. If you can give me a chance, meet me by the bleachers in the gym after school. Hopefully I'll see you this afternoon, and you'll see me.
