《Violet》«Chapter 11 - The little devil.»

It had been 5 weeks since I have been discharged and taken to Mr and Mrs Hayes' house. My routine everyday was to wake up, eat and sleep. I couldn't get out of this room that I felt tormented by. The bright sky made it tempting to hop out of bed and enjoy the day. I was sick of this room, I wanted go on a walk and stretch my legs.
Mrs Hayes stayed with me cause she did her work from home. But Adrian and Mr Hayes disappeared often, sometimes I didn't see them for days. Mrs Hayes was in the kitchen preparing a smoothie for me since she saw the look of excitement on my face when I looked out the window and decided to make me a smoothie than take me out. But she did open the windows for some fresh air.
Most of the casts around my arms and legs were removed. But I didn't question anyone about the contract, I knew it was too early so I moved that task for a later stage.
I yawned and stretched my arms either sides of me. Although I had fragile legs, I felt that I was capable for a walk but everyone banned me. Annoyed would've been a perfect description for my emotions. The sunshine from outside beamed brightly, almost blinding me. I had to cover my eyes as for protection.
Just then I heard the door open, it was Mrs Hayes. "Oh dear, is it to bright? Lemme fix that up for you." Still blinded by the light, I turned my head away from the window only to make out Mrs Hayes hurdling over to the window and shutting the blinds. I watched Mrs Hayes perch herself upon the bed's edge that I laid on and eagerly placed a glass filled of smoothie.
I examined the smoothie as I held it up to my mouth. "Strawberries and milk dear." Mrs Hayes notified and stared at me. I nodded my head with a smile and gulped the refreshing liquid down my throat. It tasted sweet, not too tangy but perfectly sweet. Within seconds, the smoothie was completed.
Mrs Hayes took the glass from me and placed it on the bedside table, then turned back to me with a smile etched upon her face. "Anything keeping you uncomfortable?" I shook my head and she stood up from her spot and came closer to me. "Do you want to see something I have here? I thought you might like having a look!" Mrs Hayes exclaimed with excitement and nudged a thick book on my lap.
I shrugged my shoulders, my eyes were glued to the profile of the book which had several flower stickers surrounding the boarders and a title that read '.' in glowing colors upon the cover. It looked like an old photo album.
I gazed up at Mrs Hayes questionably. "This is a photo album of pictures of my family." She traced the edges of the photo album which laid on my lap lovingly. "It's been passed on from my parents, but I think you would like to have a look."
Her eyes twinkled when I flipped open the dusty cover, two pictures that were shaded black and white were on the first page. A handsome man around his early 20's wearing a t-shirt and shorts hugged a very pretty woman with long hair drifting all around her as they stood by a sea. They were both grinning at the camera.

"Ah, my mother and father." Mrs Hayes pointed at the picture with her voice filled of pride, I nodded and smiled. Underneath the picture a date of '' was scribbled. The next picture underneath that was of another pair of good looking couple. A woman in a cocktail dress that fitted her like a glove was kissing a man on the cheek who was wearing a button down shirt and a bow tie whilst beaming, as they sat on a bench in what looked like a club.
They looked beautiful together. "They are Henry's parents, sweetie." Mrs Hayes said and urged me to flip over to the next page.
Soon we were finished almost half of the album, numerous pictures of Mr and Mrs Hayes' parents were presented neatly including one that was clicked when the couples met each other.
The next page was of a picture with Mr and Mrs Hayes. Unlike the previous pictures, it was colored. Mr Hayes was scrunching his face while Mrs Hayes was pulling at his hair with a smug expression on her face. Mrs Hayes went silent and blushed furiously when she saw it.
A couple more pictures of Mr and Mrs Hayes passed when the latest one caught my attention. Mrs Hayes was cradling a baby in the picture. The baby was sucking its fingers whilst gaping at Mrs Hayes, wearing nothing but a diaper. For some weird reason, my heart stopped and I felt goosebumps arise on my skin.
"Look! That's my little devil, Adrian." Mrs Hayes chuckled. "He was just a newborn then." I looked at the date under the picture, where '' was scrawled. I never saw childhood pictures of the Hayes, especially Adrians'.
I smiled at the toddler in the next picture with his blond hair sticking up into the air. He folded his small arms tightly around his stomach with a grin etched on his face. I admit, it would kill me to say this but Adrian was a cute toddler and had the impression of innocence. However that was before he turned into an actual devil.
I couldn't help but stare, maybe I liked Adrian as a child. My heart swelled at the pictures that were recorded in the album, it made me want to remember my own childhood, even if it was terrible. A couple more of turning pages and then we completed the album.
"That's all of it. But there are a couple more albums to look at if you would like?" Mrs Hayes was clutching the album with her lips grinning from ear to ear. I nodded my head, excited that there would be more entertainment to await for.
———
This could be the most annoying situation that I could've ever been in. Two men were arguing right before me, for the past hour. "Stop it." Mr Hayes gritted, leaning forwards from his position beside the edge of the bed. "You think I should?" Adrian replied hotly, his face was growing red.
Both men were visiting me, but clearly were indulged in their own argument. It was frustrating to listen to them arguing back and forth. Mr Hayes scowled at Adrian. "Take it Adrian, no more words."
"I would be a fool to take your money. I can afford for myself. I have for the past 7 years." Adrian replied and I watched them trying not to groan. "Listen to me Adrian, I'm only trying to help you." Mr Hayes said in a sharper tone.

"No." That was all that it took for Mr Hayes to leave his seat. "Okay." He stormed out of the room, making sure to slam the door as loud as he could. Adrian and I flinched at the sudden movement.
I glanced at Adrian from the corner of my eye. He wore a red jumper and black shorts. His hair which was normally brushed neatly, was all messed up. There were dark circles beneath his blue eyes that glistened as if they were in pain.
Mr Hayes and Adrian were arguing over money. Mr Hayes was kindly offering Adrian money for an unknown reason, but Adrian declined him in a harsh way. I refrained myself from telling him to be nice, even though I knew I would never have the courage to.
I immediately looked away when Adrian heaved his chest and chose to stare at me. "Did you get your casts changed earlier?" He hoarsely asked and I nodded. "Need anything else?" I shook my head and heard him sigh under his breath.
Adrian remained silent for a while, adding to the weirdness of the room. I yawned and rubbed my eyes, drowsiness flowing within me. I lowered myself under the covers slowly, making sure that I didn't accidentally hurt myself. I closed my eyes but snapped them open when I felt his fingers caress my head, my shoulders immediately moved. "Shh... It's okay." My body stopped shaking but the feeling of panic still erupted.
His hands were soothingly brushing my head. Somehow, I was comfortable by his actions, so much that my statue like body subsided. I heard him hum in a soft whispering tone which sounded dreamy. I felt my eyes occluding whilst blinking, I was fighting to keep them open.
"Follow me dear, show me your face. The one full of grace and the one that is brave." Adrian sang delicately. I felt myself swimming in a swirl of thoughts with my eyes closed in relaxation.
Why was Adrian of all people comforting me in this helpless situation, and why was I short of any resistance?
I couldn't help but remember the photos of Adrian as a child from the album Mrs Hayes and I looked over before. The innocent and pure looking Adrian had me in awe.
I thought of Adrian as the same innocent and pure child I was showed of. Maybe he was never evil, but there was no doubt that I was wrong. Adrian was an evil spirit trying to haunt me with his presence.
But I smiled, still smitten over those photos, like when Mrs Hayes said 'My little devil.' The little devil might change, but I would not take any chances. I experienced the sufferings I endured when I did trust him.
I cleared the thoughts and sank into the depths of the blankness of my mind, and yawned.
———
Excitement rushed through my veins as I walked around. It was a sunny day, a little cold but nothing unbearable. "Need any help dear?" Mr Hayes said as he smiled down at me. I shook my head and hopped over to the coat rack for a coat.
Since it was a nice afternoon, and that my injuries healed quickly over the past few weeks, Mrs Hayes thought of heading out on a walk with me and Mr Hayes. I hated the weather but I was grateful since I couldn't stay in that suffocating room longer.
I excitedly reached for a maroon coat and dragged it on myself feeling the warmth. It wasn't a surprise that I found the weather cold since I was wearing a yellow knee length dress and black tights that Mrs Hayes gave me earlier.
My eyes were set upon Mr and Mrs Hayes who were looking ready to go, I smiled. "Ready Violet?" Mrs Hayes asked me while pulling her coat on and walking towards me with Mr Hayes right on her trail. I nodded as she walked forwards until she exited the room.
I peppily scurried behind Mr and Mrs Hayes. Mr Hayes turned over to me when we stepped outside the main door. "Thrilled, are we?" He chuckled and I felt my cheeks heat up with embarrassment, I nodded.
Soon we were all seated in Mr Hayes' car and were on our way to the park which was only a few blocks away from Mr and Mrs Hayes' house. They wanted to ride to the park instead of walking cause they feared I would get tired and hurt since I had only gotten my crutches for my legs off last week.
Adrian had not made an appearance to join us. Mrs Hayes did invite him but I didn't know whether he would show up or not. At least I would have a good walk outdoors.
The car pulled up at a parking area that was decorated with streetlights and green bushes.
"Alright we're here!" Mr Hayes cheered and Mrs Hayes laughed, twisting around in her seat so that she was facing me "Let's go!" With her thrilled announcement, we got out of the car.
A giggle escaped my lips when I marched on the pavement, celebrating the cold air. "Wait up dear!" I stopped to wait for Mr and Mrs Hayes and they hurriedly scampered either side of me. "You need to calm down, or else we would lose our energy." Mrs Hayes panted as we all walked at the same pace.
"Yeah, even though you just got off your leg crutches, you still seem to be more energetic than this old and slow turtle." Mr Hayes agreed with Mrs Hayes to which he earned a smack on the head. "You aren't that old!" Mrs Hayes glared at him playfully and I giggled.
Mr Hayes shrugged and hung his head low as we walked forward, but not before whispering to me.
"I didn't mean myself."
