《17》40. Last Night

"This party has only been going on for half an hour and he is already buzzed." I observed the wibbly wobbly Rami in the middle of the room with a red cup on one hand and a pizza on another, swinging along to the music. "Is getting drunk fast a good thing or a bad thing?"

"I wouldn't know." The werewolf muttered next to me, eating a plate full of grilled steak and salad.

Eva is chatting with Doctor Maxine while Nina is eating on the couch, completely entertained on watching the drunk vampire. This party only included our small circle: me, Lysander, Rami, Eva and Nina, along with Doctor Maxine. Enoch is also invited just because, but he isn't here yet so maybe he might not show up, not down to party with supernaturals. Also, Eva gave a last minute invitation to Rami's mother and his little brothers, who are also running late.

Before the party, I finally had the time to clean up properly. I took a bath with hot water and wore clothes that I haven't worn repeatedly for the past few days. Lysander, as usual, was forced to take a shower and wore the same clothes he's been wearing, but cleaner, since he still doesn't have too much clothes. In tonight's party, I wore a casual burgundy dress while Lysander wore his usual tight white shirt and black jeans. Rami got his contacts and round glasses, covering up the vampire eyes.

"Drew." Doctor Maxine came up after speaking with Eva. "Do you mind if we talk in private? WIth Lysander and Rami?"

"No problem. Let's go in the backyard." The doctor went ahead while I removed the paper plate from Lysander's hand, making him frown at me. I took his hand and clutched on it, dragging him with me as I marched towards Rami. I put his empty cup of liquor down at the table and latched on his arm, leading the two boys to the backyard.

"What's happening? Are we in trouble?" Rami questioned, genuinely looking nervous as he fiddles with his green flannel. "Whatever it was, I didn't do it."

Doctor Maxine just raised a brow before shaking his head. She pulled out two folded papers from her purse and handed them to me. It's the results from the tests she ran for Lysander and Rami. I carefully scanned Rami's information and saw everything that changed from his body. I did the same to Lysander's and saw that almost everything looked the same as Doctor Rai showed me his information before. Almost. Still a werewolf, that's for sure. But, slightly different.

"Lysander had been injected with different chemicals." She explained, flicking her brown eyes at the confused werewolf. "Some stayed on the safe parts of the body, and they can be removed with a few cleansing medicines. However, there were some that went far off and it had affected his cells. Have you ever heard of the experiment that scientists are trying to do, regarding aging?"

I looked at the information on Lysander's results and nodded.

"Scientists are trying to slow down aging physically."

"Yes. And that involves messing with body cells. Telomeres are in charge of the aging process. It is supposed to be shortening as we grow older. Rami's, as you can see there, had gone frozen."

Rami took the paper from me and grew even more paler than he already was. His eyes skimmed through the information, then he brushed a hand through his hair and let out a stressed sigh. "I figured this would happen."

"Rami's telomeres are frozen while Lysander's began to shorten normally." Doctor Maxine summarized her report, announcing the news to the boys. "Lysander, I've looked through Doctor Rai's files and found your information. He included that before you were experimented, your telomeres were shortening very slowly. Not exactly frozen, but it's shortening very, very slow, that you're hardly aging in appearance. While Rami, who was human before, his telomeres were shortening normally, in normal rate, but now, it's frozen, which means that he will stop aging."

"Vampires do not age. Werewolves age very slowly. Humans age normally. It makes sense." Rami concluded, clutching on his forehead.

Lysander furrowed his eyebrows. "So I age like humans now?"

Doctor Maxine nodded. "Yes. Whatever the scientists in Area 51 did to you, whatever they injected you, it caused some damage to your cells and it resulted into that. I'm guessing it's all connected with your hormones. There are hormones that are responsible for aging and they affect the way you act, feel and think. The scientists there wanted you to act differently. They wanted you stronger, with no emotions and thoughts, so they must have tampered your hormones. Human body is complicated, I can guess that a werewolf body should be a little more complex." She shot the two men a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry about my findings. If it helps, there is science in everything. If there's a way to freeze telomeres and stop aging, there must also be a way to unfreeze it. If you want to return to your normal ways of aging, I might be able to help."

I eyed Rami and Lysander, not knowing what to say. They both seemed a little shaken up by the news, though neither seemed upset. Just shocked. Rami already knows the deal with becoming a vampire. He knows what he signed up for when he agreed to Idris saving him. As for Lysander, he's lived for so long looking like that and now he will be aging faster. Normally, in human term, but faster in werewolf times, I guess.

Rami shook his head. "I think I can get behind this. I mean, staying young forever, that's what some people are spending millions of money on and I got it for free - kind of. I knew that'll happen. Just you telling me that just reminded me how crazy it is that I'm officially a vampire. I'm okay with the whole not aging thing."

Doctor Maxine nodded before turning to Lysander.

"I'm okay, too." The werewolf says softly, his hand finding mine. "I've spend enough years looking like this. It's time to change and grow old."

"If you change your mind, just go to me. I can find a way." She gave us another smile before returning back inside.

Rami let out a hiccup. "Well. Guys, good news. I'm going to look young for the rest of my life now. I'm not going to get wrinkly. Sorry puppy." He patted Lysander's head before waving his hand at us. "Now if you excuse me, I'm going to drink some more to celebrate my vampirism."

With that, Rami skips back to the living room, immediately grabbing a red cup and filling it up with Nina's mixed drink. Sighing, I sat on a bench with Lysander. I put my head on his shoulder while he rests a hand on my knee.

"So, aging."

"Yeah."

"I'm sorry." I pursed my lips, feeling responsible of the outcome. "If I hadn't been so stupid and get the military's hands on you, this wouldn't have happened. None of this would have happened. Rami wouldn't have to be so scared of seeing his friends and family, in fear of attacking them, and now, not aging while you have all these chemicals in your body and now you're going to age quickly like a werewolf shouldn't and I just ruined - "

My words were muffled by Lysander's lips.

"Shut up."

I put a hand on his chest and broke the kiss. "Are you not upset about this?"

He pecked my forehead. "No." He held my hands and stared at me deeply with those grey eyes. "This means I get to grow old, with you. I don't have to live without you because we will be aging just the same."

It took me a while to understand why that was a good thing. Then I remembered. If a werewolf's mate dies, the wolf loses his humanity and sanity and becomes a mere wild animal, or they die along, unless strong enough. But Lysander doesn't have to deal with that anymore. Because now, we have the same lifespan. I think. What if he's aging, but his lifespan is much longer than humans? Maybe. I don't know. But that's besides the point. We will grow old together.

Eva and I are on the kitchen with the table full of food while Nina teaches Lysander how to play beer pong, because the werewolf had apparently never played it before. Despite not being able to get drunk, the werewolf played along because Rami had drunkenly called him out for not knowing how to play the classic drinking game. Doctor Maxine sits by the living room with her dessert. Rami's mother and his twin brothers arrived not too long ago, who were out in the park and didn't want to leave. The Nazari family are in the backyard having their own time, though I'm sure it's a little silly considering Rami is very drunk at the moment.

"Hello, everyone!" Enoch turned up at the party, after all. He entered the room with a basket. He waved at everyone before joining us in the kitchen, setting down the basket on an empty spot. "I bought blueberry muffins!"

I picked up a muffin and my brain pounded. I only had two drinks. Damn it. "Here." I gave the tall boy my glass full of liquor, deciding that I'm done drinking for tonight.

"Muffins?"

Rami appeared at Enoch's side, stumbling over him to get one of the said treat. As he did so, the glass that Enoch was holding had slipped from his fingers and dropped to the marbled floor, making it shatter to pieces. Enoch bent down to pick up the broken pieces of glass. Eva helped right away while I watched cautiously as blood drew out from his thumb. Rami immediately caught the bloody scent and hissed, blaring his teeth as he pushed Enoch against the wall.

Lysander ran shortly at the two, putting a hand on Rami's shoulder to draw him back. However, another set of hands locked on Rami's arms, easily separating him from Enoch. Lysander shuffled towards Enoch to make sure he's okay while Rami is pushed aside, in the corner of the kitchen like a preschool student on a timeout.

"Lesson number one. You don't show them your fangs until you're near their neck." The black haired boy put hands behind his back as he smiles, flashing his own fangs. "Oh!" He ran to the table to pick up one of the muffins that Enoch brought. "Blueberry muffins!" His eyes lit up happily as he took a bite from it. "Oh, yes." He moaned, stuffing his mouth. "Greetings, humans! I'm Idris!"

Rami rolled his eyes. "You just had to be fashionably late, didn't you?"

Idris is dressed in his usual black suit, though he wore a black bow tie. Also, instead of his crimson eyes, the vampire also decided to use brown contacts to cover up his crimson iris.

"Always."

Just at that moment, Freya and the little babies arrived at the room, holding a ball that Nina had given them to play with. The mother's eyes studied everyone and frowned. "What's happening? I heard crashing from the yard." She turned to Rami, who gave her a small forced smile.

Idris cleared his throat and stepped forward, wiping his hands on his pants before extending it. "Your son is lovely. My name is Idris." Freya shook his hand, puzzled as she looked at Rami. After a few seconds of checking out Idris, then looking back at her son, her eyes widened and a wide smile spread on her lips. "And hello, little hobbits." The old vampire knelt down to the children's level, shaking their hands as well.

"Why's your hands so cold?"

"Why are your teeth so sharp?"

They questioned Idris just as they did to Lysander, observing the vampire with curiosity.

I jumped at Idris' side and blurted out, "When he was a child, he didn't brush his teeth all the time like his dentists told him to. Also, he eats a lot of ice cream."

"I'm Freya. These are Theodore," She ruffled the boy with the blue flannel's hair. "and Demetri." She pointed at the other baby with the red top. "Rami never told me he has a - "

"Mom, have you tried these muffins?" Rami jumps to her side, putting an arm around her shoulder as he guided her towards the kitchen. "They are the best! Enoch, did you make these yourself?"

Enoch blinked as Rami acknowledged him as if he didn't just try to eat him. "O-Oh! No!" He laughed nervously. "I actually just bought them from a bakery. I can't cook."

Nina then lead Enoch to the living room. "Here. Have a seat. I'll get you some food. The lasagna is bomb and I'm not just saying that because I made it."

I quickly checked everyone in the place. Eva and Doctor Maxine remained at the kitchen, now joining Rami and Freya. Lysander joined my side while Idris casually goes back to the muffins. Everyone is okay. Everyone is calm, apart from Enoch but Nina's taking care of him. "Okay." I took a deep breath and ruffled the curly hairs of the kids. "Who wants some chocolate ice cream?!"

"Me!"

"Yeah!"

"Great! Poke Lysander's arms while I get you some ice cream."

As the night came to an end, our guests slowly started to leave. Doctor Maxine was the first to leave, stating that she has work tomorrow. She reminded me and Rami that we can come in Silverstein anytime. Freya and the twins left not long after the scientist. They will be staying in town for one more day, then they will have to return to Atlanta. Enoch left just moments ago since he was too tired, but Rami made sure to apologize a hundred times before he left, explaining that he was just newly turned vampire and has a hard time controlling himself. The poor boy said he's cool but we could all tell he's still slightly shaken up.

"I'm just gonna have to get used to it, I guess." Rami sighs sadly, joining me and Lysander in the backyard once again. Nina and Eva are inside, sitting by themselves.

"It gets easier." Idris shrugs, sitting on the ground between Rami and Lysander. He sees the red cup in Rami's hand and takes it. He took a sip of the liquor and grimaced, sticking out his tongue. "Agh! I will never grow fond of this taste."

"Yet you like the taste of human blood." Lysander pointed out, hiding his face behind my shoulder to hide his grin from Idris. "Vampires are crazy." The werewolf whispered in my ear.

"I heard that!" Rami and Idris exclaimed in unison before they glared at each other.

"Oh, you guys are just adorable." I cooed. "Crazy, but adorable."

Rami just chugged down the rest of his drink while Idris fiddled with his bow tie. Then, he announced, "I'm going to take Rami with me to Europe."

The said vampire spit everything that he had just drank onto my legs that are spread out. I scrunched my face with disgust while the werewolf tried his best not to show any amusement and failed terribly after letting a giggle slip out.

"What?!"

Idris looked at Rami innocently. "I said I'm going to take you with me to Europe."

"And why would you do that?"

"Because, it's fun. Also because you need to be around other vampires. If you're with my clan, you will learn better. As brilliant as these humans are, you will learn how to control your new body with vampires who went through the same thing as you. It's only for a few weeks. Perhaps before September. Right now, my clan and I have decided to do some traveling for the summer. After visiting a few vampire friends from different states and sharing them the cure, we will be running around places and all." Idris turned to me. "I believe I owe this one a trip to Europe. Also, he owes me a drink."

Rami pointed at himself. "Me? Owe you a drink? Since when?"

"I remember you telling me, when you're dead, you'll buy me a drink."

"What! But I'm not dead."

"You technically are."

"Well, I'm broke."

"Guess you'll just have to find alternatives in getting that drink."

God damn, these two. I clapped my hands together and gave them a big sarcastic smile. "Okay. I can tell you two will have A LOT of fun together."

Idris winked at Lysander. "And so will you."

"Do you know something we don't?" I narrowed my eyes at him while Lysander raised a brow.

"I always know something you don't."

"Alright." I jumped from my seat, throwing my hands up in the air defeated. "I'm done here. Good night. Have a lovely life."

I heard the two vampires snickering as I left the backyard, entering the living room to find the two women in a heated make out session. "Oh, fucking hell. My eyes! My poor innocent eyes!"

"You do this, every time you see us." Eva grunted, pulling away from Nina with a red face.

"I know." I laughed. "Love you. Don't mind me, just wanted to say good night."

As we reached the door, I heard Eva call out, "Have fun making little wolf babies!"

Like I said, I'm so done with this party.

***

As soon as I stepped inside the apartment, I was pushed against the wall and showered with werewolf hot kisses. Lysander's hands brushed against my legs, pushing up my dress before lifting them around his waist. My lips collided with his while I felt him move us farther in the living room. Soon, I felt my back against the hard carpeted floor rather than a soft cushioned bed or couch.

Lysander's mouth wandered to my neck while my fingers tangled through his hair. His hands found the zipper of my dress, which was immediately pulled down and before I know it, I was stripped down into my underwear. I used my hand to remove Lysander's white shirt, which he eagerly helped me remove, before moving down to remove his pants as well.

"We aren't even in my room yet." I breathed heavily as Lysander grazed his teeth against my neck.

The werewolf's hand slid up to my thighs, grinding against me. "I don't care."

It wasn't long until we were covered in nothing but each other's warmth, our skin against each other while every part of our body and soul touched each other, full of nothing but passion. If this is how I'm going to spend every night with the werewolf, so be it. We may not have forever, but at least we will make our short lives worth every breath. Now, and whatever future we have together.
