《17》38. End of the Road

I sat on Lysander's bed, watching him move around his room and shoving things in his backpack. He doesn't even bother folding his clothes neatly. He just shoves them in, along with a few little objects in the room such as his sketchbook. The dark haired man looked at me after putting a book with the rest of his belongings, then he raised a brow.

"Are you just going to watch me or are you going to pack?"

"I'm having a blast watching you." Lysander smiled and stood in front of me, putting his hands on the bed and trapping me between his arms. He pressed his lips on mine for a second, then I pulled away. I put a hand on his scarred cheek and run my thumb over it. "Lysander. This is your home. The wolf cave. Canis Major. This is your pack home. This is where Doctor Rai found you."

I brought him home. That was my job. Doctor Rai told me to take care of him, to make sure he is untouched by the government. That part wasn't exactly mission accomplished, but I still got him back. Now, he's back to where he belongs. After the attempted experiment, he's home.

"And?" The werewolf tilted his head.

"Well, I just figured..." My stomach flipped nervously. "You were basically kidnapped by scientists and now you're back where you belong. I figured you wouldn't want to leave..."

Lysander frowned and backed away, standing straight while his eyes turned sad. "Do you not want me to come with you?"

My eyes widened. "What? No! No, no, no. That's not what I meant." His expression didn't relax at all. "What I meant to say is that you don't have to leave your home if you don't want to. You were taken to Silverstein, to West Grove, against your will. You had a life here before all that experimenting shit happened. And now, you can continue it without anyone trying to hunt you down."

Lysander stared at me for a brief moment before sitting down next to me, grabbing my hands. "I told you this before. I meant it then and I mean it now. I do miss my old life every now and then and you're right. This is my pack's house and this is where I spent most of my life. But that was before I found my mate. I found you and I was happier than I ever was. Sure, we were caught up in a big mess but I was with you and that's all I ever wanted." The werewolf observed his room with a small smile. "I had a lot of memories here. But, it's not really the same anymore. The times I spend living here by myself only does more damage than joy. This place doesn't really give me comfort, belonging, and happiness anymore, like a home should do."

He turned to me again, and I could see loneliness in his grey eyes. A lone wolf.

"What gives me comfort, belonging and happiness is not a place anymore." He then kissed me longingly, making my heart race happily. "It's you." One hand traveled to my waist and another caressed my face while he showered me with passionate kisses. My back met the bed while my hands wandered from his hair to his back.

Then, the door was slammed open and in walked Rami, looking at us awkwardly.

"Now that I have vampire super hearing, please, don't."

The wolf cave has officially been cleaned and we are out. Rami and I walked ahead to my car, while Lysander takes a few time to say goodbye to his home.

"Apparently, that one blue haired vampire dude from Ulysses' clan drove it back here." I shared to Rami as we put our belongings in the back. "Caleb. He put a note on the window. Said he was pissed that we stole his car and that I owe him now and the cure doesn't count."

Rami grunted. "How am I going to be able to talk shit about vampires when I'm a vampire?"

I pursed my lips. "Do you think there's a way to reverse you back to human?"

He shook his head. "No. I did my research on that and nada. Besides, I think I'd like to keep my powers. It has a lot of benefits - though there are things that makes me wish I don't have them, like hearing people have loud sex."

"We were not loud."

Rami just gave me a smirk before jumping in the car, shotgun. I took my seat behind the steering wheel and smiled happily at the full tank. Maybe Caleb the jerk vampire isn't that big of a jerk. He's nice enough to put gas on my baby. I turned on the radio, since I do not have a phone to play my own music.

Lysander finally joined us, throwing his backpack on the floor before patting Rami's shoulder and kissing my cheek.

I turned on the engine and turned to the boys.

"Ready to go back on the road?"

At least three and a half day on the road, maybe four or five maximum with stops. However, this gang is not planning on making anymore stops, as we are all eager to get back in West Grove. So far, the first seven hours were a blast. I drove the first four and Rami took over for three hours. Then, we stop at a resting area so my car doesn't overheat. The sun is awfully strong and west coast is suffering on heat wave at the moment. Fortunately for Rami, Idris only drank a little bit of the cure that I gave him during our trip to Area 51, so there is more left. Rami drank the pink liquid and was able to run around the scorching day during our stops.

Now, it's the afternoon and but the orange star is still going strong. We are driving down a city in Nevada. Thankfully, it's nowhere near Area 51 but the road is still desert. No one mentioned it, but I'm sure we were all thinking about everything that happened in this state. Rami, the driver, increased his speed, no doubt wanting to get out of the desert faster.

Lysander had fallen asleep in the back, looking like a puppy cuddled up on my cardigan that he used as a pillow.

"A thought that came to me." Rami turned to me. "You're worried about your future with Lysander. About the fact that you'll live shorter than him and the whole 'wolf going insane or dying' thing going on."

"Yeah." I sank to my seat. I don't even want to think about it. "He says if he's strong enough, it won't happen."

"Maybe." He paused. "But what if you don't have to die."

I chuckled. "I don't have regeneration powers or horcruxes."

"No, but you have a vampire friend who can turn you into a vampire." My smile faltered. Me, turn into a vampire? "I mean, I know, I told you, it hurts like hell to turn into one and drinking blood is weird, but there's a lot of perks of being a vampire and one of them is living as long as forever."

"I don't know..." I trailed off, not really liking the idea. "Don't get me wrong, you're totally right. Vampires can do cool stuff and all. It's just, I don't know. I think I prefer to stay human."

Maybe there's a way to get my happy ending without changing myself. I will find a way.

"Yeah, of course." Rami smiled. "Just a thought. Anyway, I see In-N-Out with drive thru at the end of this road. Your boy's craving some fries."

"Didn't your doctor told you that you need to lay off the fries?" I teased, reminding him of the time we sneaked in a hospital and a nurse told him to avoid eating at fast food places.

"Drew, I'm already basically dead." The boy scoffed. "Fries aren't going to kill vampires."

"Although we've come to the end of the road, still I can't let you go."

"It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you."

Rami and I turned to each other as we belted out together, "Come to the end of the road, still I can't let you go! It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you!"

The werewolf in the backseat woke up glaring at us. "It's 3 in the morning."

"And your point is?"

I laughed at Rami before reaching my hand out for Lysander. "You belong to me, I belong to you." I sang, giving him a wink, making the man bite his lip to suppress a smile, attempting to appear annoyed. "There's In-In-Out for you there." I pointed at the white paper bag beside his backpack. "With some animal style fries. There's only a little bit of it left because Rami ate some."

"Me? It was you!" The said boy defended.

"Because you ate mine!"

The werewolf groaned. "You two are so loud."

"Oh." Rami raised his eyebrows. "Don't talk to me about being loud, you - "

"I love this song!"

I turned up the volume of the radio really loud.

Day three.

Kansas.

We're at a park. I'm sitting on a swing while the boys are running. It is 6 a.m. and they are running around a track. There are several other people in the park that are exercising and watched the two fast runners go. I acted like I didn't know the two. Lysander demanded a race and so far, Rami is winning. Minutes ago, Lysander wanted to shift to his wolf form to show that he is much faster in wolf form, but I stepped in and stopped him for the sake of everyone in the park.

At some point, they disappeared from my sight but I stayed in the swing with my coffee and breakfast burrito. Humming a song as I swing back and forth, I watched the people around me. Some are exercising, some are playing sports, and some are just relaxing on tables. Everything look so peaceful.

While I took the last bites of my breakfast, something brushed against my ankles. I looked down to find a black cat with big eyes purring at me. "Well, hello there, Professor McGonagall." I finished my burrito and put the wrapper of it inside my jacket's pocket before picking up the cat. I held it in my arms while it rubs its face on my chest. "Aw, you're so cute!"

"Hemlock!"

A man ran towards me, his hazel eyes down to the cat in my arms. He sighs in relief before smiling at me.

"Sorry about him. He likes to sneak out of the house all the time and go to this park." I handed the adorable ball of fur to the owner. As the man reached out, the cat brought out the sharp nails and attempted to scratch him. "Hemlock." He scolded before petting him. "Thanks for finding him, I guess."

"No problem."

I waved at the two as they left.

I just realized the cat probably just went to me because I had food and not because of my charm for cute animals.

Speaking of, a cute wolf is running towards me right now. His head went to my hand and nuzzled it before sticking out his tongue. I was about to pet him but I remembered how the cat only wanted me for my burrito. "If you only want me for food, you can leave."

The wolf tilted his head with confusion, resting on the ground.

"That's a big dog you got there." An old woman jogging cooed. "He's adorable! Can I pet him?"

Lysander's red eyes narrowed towards me, silently telling me to refuse. "Yes you can."

The woman smiled happily and petted Lysander. The wolf didn't even try looking pleased. He just moved his head away from the woman's hand after a minute and stood at my side.

"He's a shy one, I see. Well, have a lovely day." She petted Lysander once again before jogging away.

I put hands on my hips as I turned to the black wolf. "Studies show that petting dogs can make people's day better."

"I don't speak wolf but I can bet he doesn't care." Rami suddenly appears at the other swing. "And you're probably right. Lysander only wants you when he wants to eat, if you catch my drift."

I glared at the two of them. "I'm going back to the car and driving away without both of you."
