《17》35. The Centurion

Everything happened all at once. An explosion in the middle of the field, a few feet from where Rami and I are. Soldiers screamed around me. I couldn't see clearly as smoke from the explosion and dirt from the ground clouded my vision. I could barely see shadows and dark figures around me, running and crashing against each other, launching, attacking, shooting, ripping each other up. I didn't know what was happening or what caused the explosion. A pair of arms had grabbed me and I felt the familiar wind running against me before I was moved to a different place.

I was put inside the base, in the same dead end we were the other day. I turned to the person who carried me and gasped with surprise to see the vampire who was supposed to be with Eva and Nina. "Eleanor! How are you here?" I asked with my mouth dropped, my heart racing. "Did you - What the hell - What - "

"I know." The redhead flipped her hair over her shoulders. "I would have arrived sooner but there was this cute waitress on the way and I was distracted. Also, Ulysses' clan was late. We had a set time and place to meet up but they were late anyway. But it's okay because there's a lot of them. More vampires to help." Just then, three more people joined us. A long blonde haired vampire dressed like a lumberjack, a smiling yet low-energized vampire and the alive boy with glasses.

"Dude. I'm The Boy Who Lived."

"Oh my god." I jumped in Rami's arms, crying in happiness. "How did you know you weren't going to die?"

"I didn't."

"Holy shit." I had to lean on the wall for support as I steadied my breathing. "Okay what the hell is happening?"

Ulysses let go of Idris' arm, letting the tired vampire stand on his own. "Clans gathered together to save a friend." Idris. They came for Idris. A few vampire clans are here. That means Idris' clan is here. His friends from the east, Ulysses' clan. Those scary asshole vampires are here and they are on our side. What the hell. Holy shit. Is this even real? Did I die already?

"Now, I believe there is someone who wants to talk." Eleanor walked over to me and Rami, handing us each a bluetooth earpiece. "She had me stole these from her job's storage." The vampire boasted.

I put the object in my ear, as did Rami, and we both jumped at the loud screaming in the other line. "Can you hear?! Are you there? Is it working? Are you alive? Eleanor, they better be alive or I'm going to kill you myself!"

"Old lady, relax. We're here." Rami replied with a cheeky smile. "You're an earful techie but you're the best, I hope you know that."

"We'll talk later. Right now, we have a werewolf to save. I broke connection and was kicked out of the system last time. But I did some digging with the system after that and saw that they have a hidden building. It isn't exactly Area 51, but an extension of it, known as The Centurion. At the last hall, on the right, that looks like a dead end but there should be some sort of passage. Try checking the floors because I think they're tunnels or something."

"I'm going to go outside in the battlefield." Eleanor declared as we began walking to where Eva instructed us. "I'm going to help out my fellow vampire friends in fighting the humans - and maybe even get a snack. Those hunters have pissed me off so much. I'm going to get a bite. And Idris, I know you don't want to put our clan in danger but you're our leader. A family. If they take one of us, we will come for them. Now go and get that damn werewolf and get this over with. I promised Evandra I will get you all back in time for the wedding."Idris gave her a brief nod before she sprinted out of the building.

I can only imagine what it's like outside. A warzone of immortals and mortals.

Ulysses, Idris, Rami and I found a door from the floor, camouflaging so well that we almost didn't see it. We jumped down from the opening and it led us to an underground tunnel. Above us, there are many pipes, some of which are leaking with chemicals have a strong smell. We were only able to walk for a few feet until we met soldiers guarding the passage. Fortunately, there were only a few of them, nothing that the vampires couldn't handle. Idris, due to his worn out condition, had to drink blood from one of the soldiers to regain his power back. As soon as he drank some human blood, he looked stronger than ever.

We reached the secret laboratory that Eva mentioned. The Centurion. However, there are people all over the place: scientists and soldiers walking from every direction. "We can't take them all at once. We're outnumbered even with you two." I concluded after observing the number of people. This is where they're hiding Lysander, for sure. He wasn't outside when Rami and I were about to be killed and he was not in the base, so he has to be here.

After Ulysses took down two scientists in a room, the four of us used that place to hide and think of a plan. Looking around the place, I saw many chemicals, some that are unfamiliar and some are rare to find. This includes Uranium. We really don't want to mess around with any of those heavy chemicals. I looked at the ceilings, then the walls and the floors and an idea came to me. "Eva. Find out where the sprinklers of this place is connected to? Their water source?"

I heard her fingers hitting on the keys of her laptop before she reported, "A tank from the outside. All water from that lab is from that big silver tank."

"Perfect." I then turned to Ulysses and Idris. "I need you two to watch the doors and make sure no one comes in. Rami, I need your beautiful brain's help."

"Are you telling me what to do?" Ulysses raised a brow.

The vampire beside him simply rolled his crimson eyes before dragging him outside the door. Rami smiled, joining my side as I collected some equipment. "What's the plan?"

"You remember how to make the Sleepers? We have chemicals around us. We don't have the plant, but I think we can find some alternative. We need something that has the same effect."

Rami nodded. "Sounds good."

Rami and I worked together in gathering some chemicals from the cabinets of the room, dumping them on a clear container and mixing them all up. We weren't completely sure what we were doing, but someone from our bluetooth earpiece seems to know.

"Are you making Truxol?"

"Doctor Maxine?!" Rami and I glanced at each other with confusion. "Is that you? What are you doing with Eva and Nina?" Rami questioned.

"I was visiting the girls." The scientist replied. "I saw her screen, watching you two from a camera." I searched the room for the camera and waved at the upper left corner. "And it looks like you're making Truxol. The white vapor that puts people to sleep, that's what you're making?"

"Yes ma'am."

"I know the ingredients. I made the formula myself. And it looks to me that you're getting everything right. However, you put too much Temazepam and too little hydrogen peroxide. Unless you want to kill every person in that lab, I suggest you balance out your ingredients."

"Shit." I added a few more of hydrogen peroxide and several other chemicals. If I made changes to any of the ingredients, I have to change the volume of the others too. To balance out the equation and no one dies from any explosive mistakes.

Doctor Maxine walked us through making the Sleeper, which is apparently named Truxol. Rami and I did everything the chemist instructed, and after about twenty minutes, we ended up with more than half of a gallon of Truxol. As it turns out, the plant we found was only an alternative, natural source but Silverstein made theirs originally out of chemicals that we used just now.

The half of gallon of Truxol is enough. I hope it works.

Rami and I admired our work that is emitting some white smoke due to the heat from chemical reactions. Then, we called the two vampires over. "Whoa. What is that."

"Don't smell it. Whatever you do, do not inhale the smoke." I warned the long haired vampire who immediately put his face inside the container. "Ulysses, I need you to find the big silver tank outside the base." The vampire gave a nod, still intrigued by the smoking liquid. "Spill all water inside and replace it with this. It's not much, but it's enough to make everyone in this building sleep for a bit." Ulysses carefully held the plastic container with a lid over it. "Oh! And when you're done, scream out 'Allons-y!' really loud. Idris should be able to hear you, right?"

"Correct."

"According to Doctor Maxine, the liquid will eventually vaporize and we cannot inhale it. So we're gonna have to hold our breathes for a bit." I murmured. "I really hope it works."

"It will." Idris says reassuringly, though he doesn't have a smile on his face like always. His eyes met Rami for a short minute before turning to me. "Ulysses accomplished his mission. I've just heard him."

"Good." I searched the room for a lighter and found one in a drawer. I picked up some papers and folders from the same drawer and stood up on a chair, near the smoke detector. I burned the papers using the lighter. The smoke detector caught the smoke from it and after a few seconds, it made loud beeping noises. Then, hot liquid sprinkled from the ceiling and soon it quickly turned into a vapor. Rami, Idris and I hid under a table to shield ourselves from the chemical and held our breaths as white smoke surrounded us.

Not a minute later, the vapor disappeared and the sprinkler stopped. I peeked outside the window and saw that the scientists and soldiers had fallen asleep on the ground.

"Amazing." Idris breathed behind me, also looking at the unconscious bodies. "If I didn't know any better, I'd think you're a witch. But I suppose, this is just your human intelligence. You, hobbit and the women behind that earpiece."

"That was low key so bad ass." Eva cheered through my right ear. "In a really nerdy way." Rami and I shared a high five. "But you did it. Everyone is out, for now. Doctor Maxine said it won't be long though, so you should hurry up and find Lysander and get the hell out of there before all those angry scientists wake up."

***

Rami, Idris and I walked through the laboratory, which is almost as big as Area 51's main base. The only issue is that communication with Eva weakens the farther we go in. By the time we reached the center, Rami and I couldn't hear anything. We haven't heard any loud barks or growls, but Idris said he can smell Lysander and he's at the very end of the end of the lab, so we're on the right track However, we found a hall that was rather disturbing.

In one hallway, we saw animals. Some are little, such as rabbits and kittens, and some are large like a cougar, a few primates and a wolf. Not Lysander, but a legitimate brown, ordinary wolf. All of them are asleep, due to the Truxol, but just by looking at them, I could see that they have been experimented with. Some have weird thing on their skins and furs, some have strange body parts and some are missing parts. It's sickening. These are animals.

Furthermore, Rami found some files in the hall. A whole stack of them.

"Experiment 12 is a cheetah. Experiment 4 is a chimp. Experiment 3 is - " Rami stopped reading. "Holy shit. Drew!" I ran beside him while Idris looked behind us. Rami pointed at a picture of a large primate that almost looked human, but still a wild animal at the same time. "They made Bigfoot!" They have experimented on an animal and created Big Foot. Of course, it's nothing like how the media portrays it to be, but the description matches. "Experiment 6 is a whale." Rami continued, showing me another file. "Commonly known as the Loch Ness Monster. It says here that the subject is missing, along with Experiment 3, which is Big Foot. That makes sense. If people are seeing weird, unexplained shits that look like animals, they must all come from here. They must have escaped or maybe they let them go on purpose. Who knows. But fucking hell. This is crazy! They were experiments of Area 51! If people found out about this, boy, the government is fucked."

I shook my head, disgusted with the whole thing. "They're messing with things that shouldn't be messed with." They aren't doing experiments on animals for medicine. No. They are converting them to weapons like Lysander. They are turning these creatures into something vicious that they can control.

"Your mate. I can hear him." Idris said suddenly before running out of the room. Rami and I left the room full of genetically modified animals and followed the vampire to the end of the laboratory. There's one last room left. Idris broke the door, revealing an unconscious Doctor Tarver and a wolf who is just beginning to wake up in an opened cage.

"Lysander."

The wolf looked at me with no recognition. He disregarded Rami and focused on the vampire in the room. His nostrils flared, slowly walking out of his silver cage. Idris took a deep breath before his fangs extended.

"Lysander, no."

"17." The old man on the floor had woken up. He glanced around us with anger and confusion before screaming at the black wolf. "17! Kill them!"

And the wolf obeyed.

***

I could only stand aside and watch with horror as the werewolf fought the vampire, who is equally as strong now. No matter how much I screamed for Lysander, no matter how much I begged him to stop, he did not listen. Rami even tried distracting the wolf, to get his attention away from Idris, but the wolf is too concentrated in killing the vampire.

"Tarver! Stop him!" I hissed, seeing the sick smile on the man's mouth. "This is not him! Lysander is not a killer! Stop!" I looked around the room for anything I could use but there's nothing here except sharp weapons.

"This is exactly what he is." The scientist cackled. "A monster by nature."

"Nature? You did something to him you sick bastard!" I ran towards Idris and pushed him out of the way, getting in front of the werewolf. "You! Listen to me right now! You are not 17! You are not an experiment. You are Lysander and you are my mate. I am your mate. This is not you! Come back, Lysander! Wake up! You're still in there, I know it! Just fight it, whatever is controlling you, whatever is in your head. You are not a monster!"

He stopped for a second and growled at me before I was tackled to the ground.

"Lysander! No!" The first thing I saw as I sat up was Idris being thrown aside and Rami's stomach getting deeply scratched by the werewolf. Blood came pouring from four deep cuts through his skin, sending Rami down to the floor. "No! No! No! Rami!" My heart stopped as Rami began to turn pale. Idris' red eyes brimmed with agony and anger.

The vampire pounced at the werewolf and once again, they fought with unbelievable strength.

Still, I couldn't move from my spot. I couldn't tear my eyes from Rami. He's losing so much blood.

Soon, people had woken up from Truxol. Scientists and soldiers arrived and tried to stop the werewolf using their weapons, but none of them were effective. Nothing worked.

"Lysander, stop." Tarver finally spoke after being forced by a scientist, though the werewolf did not listen. He didn't stop until his teeth are on Idris' neck. Even when Idris stopped moving, the werewolf did not stop attacking. He attacked scientists. He attacked soldiers. Then, he turned to Tarver with those red eyes and bloody sharp teeth and nails. The scientist's eyes grew with fear as they turned to me. "Stop him!" He yelled at me. "Stop the dog! Stop 17! Tell him to stop!" He begged, shooting a gun at the wolf.

It didn't work. Nothing worked. Whatever they did, it made him stronger.

I didn't open my mouth as the wolf tore Tarver to pieces. I didn't open my mouth when the scientist had his skin and organs shredded with the own hands of the weapon he created. I didn't open my mouth until I was the only one awake in the room, apart from the werewolf. I couldn't. I could only stare at Rami's bleeding body and cry silently.

Rami's eyes fluttered open and his lips curved up weakly and I broke.

My weak legs brought me to the corner were Idris lays, barely awake, holding the pale hands of Rami Nazari. His glasses had cracked and fallen to the ground, along with the pool of his red blood.

"Rami." I croaked, kneeling in front of him. "You can't. Not today, remember? You don't fucking die today. Not now. We need to go and help you. Now."

"I'm afraid this is as far as I'll go."

"No." My chest felt as if it has been stabbed with needles multiple times. "No. Don't say that."

I could feel my insides filling with pain. A lot of pain and regret and confusion. I don't understand why I was feeling that way, but I felt it, along with a lot of pain. My vision was blurred out by the tears that fell from my eyes nonstop and my ears heard nothing but the sobs from my mouth. Idris' teary red eyes darted past me right before I felt a hand on my shoulder, stealing my attention from Rami.

I clenched my fist and pushed the man in front of me with every drop of energy I have. It wasn't much, but he allowed me to express my anger on him. I hit him everywhere while I cried. "This is all your fault!" I cried harshly at the black haired man with red eyes, looking at me with no emotion. "You killed him! You killed Rami! You stupid science experiment!" I continued to push him. His eyes flickered back from red to grey, but I didn't stop. His hand tried to reach for me but I jolted away from him. "Don't touch me! You killed my friend! I never should have taken you!" Those grey eyes darkened as they glanced down at the body on the ground. Regret, pain and confusion flashed through his eyes. "Get away from me! Leave! I don't want to be your mate, 17!"

"Andromeda." The werewolf cried softly. "I - "

"Don't call me that. Don't. Just get out." I continued to push him until we were by the door. All the blood I stepped on, every drop of it was this man's fault. This is not my Lysander. That man is gone. This is 17. A killer. An experiment. A monster. Not my mate. "I don't want you."

The werewolf stood before me, looking broken as me. He parted his mouth to speak, but I only shook my head. "Please don't - "

"17. You're nothing to me." I said coldly. I felt something inside me breaking. A pain that hurts more than before. I gave him one last glance before returning to Idris and Rami.

"I-I don't want to die." Rami breathed out, tears falling on his face. "I'm scared."

Idris held one of his hand while I clung to the other, my own tears landing on it.

"Rami." Idris whispered, leaning down closely to Rami's face. "I can save you." The two tightened their grip on each other. "Please, let me save you." Idris rested his forehead against Rami and I looked away, not bearing the pain in the vampire's eyes.

I can only hold onto Rami's hand tightly while the two stared at each other, communicating with their eyes. Then, Rami narrowed his eyes at the vampire knowingly. "You've seen it."

"Yes."

Rami turned to me with pleading eyes. "Will you help me?"

I didn't understand. "What?"

"When I'm a new person. Will you help me?"

I nodded my head even if I didn't truly get what he meant. "I owe you so much, Rami. Anything you need, I will be there with you. I will."

"And I will, too." Idris added, giving the boy a smile.

Rami closed his eyes and let out a deep breath. "Okay. Do it. Kill me."
