《17》30. Area 51

Seven soldiers down within the first ten minutes inside this maze-like base. We walk. Hide. Fight. Walk. Hide. Fight. Repeat.

"The hallway to your right. Second room. Three soldiers. Two coming from your left."

Rami, Idris and I shared a look of belligerence before parting ways: one supernatural sprinting to the right and two humans on the left. Rami and I came face to face with two uniformed men. Just like before, we worked together to take down the soldiers. Out of seven, Rami and I had taken down two. We do not have the strongest figures and are not at all fighting types, but we do our best. Whether it be fighting with our bodies or using objects around us, we are kicking their asses.

Just as the two men stopped to ask questions about what two hooded young adults are doing in their base, I swiftly blinded them with pepper spray that I had been gripping ever since we stepped in the white tiled ground of Area 51. As their visions temporarily gave out, Rami and I tackled them inside an empty room and kicked the door shut.

Rami sprained a soldier's ankle while fracturing the other's leg while I hold them down as long as I could. "I'm so glad I watched so many TV shows. That's how I know where to hit people in the right areas." My partner in crime shared while my hands searched the soldiers for weapons. One man is armed with a normal gun while the other has a taser gun. Perfect.

I took the taser gun and used it on the soldiers, stopping all their movements. Alive, but unconscious. That's what we agreed on: not kill a soul, but temporarily get rid of anyone who gets in our way. "I'm going to have so much fun with this." I smiled slyly at the black taser gun.

"There is a group of ten coming straight ahead and they all look like human-sized Hulks so you should hide this one out." Says the mastermind from our earphones. "All rooms around you are occupied but there is one at the end of the hall to your left that only has one person. Go there."

Idris ran ahead, overhearing Eva's instructions, while Rami and I cautiously followed behind. Every move we make, we make sure we do not make suspicious noises and that includes footsteps, so we drift as light as we could. When we arrived in the room that Eva assigned us to, I see an old man knocked out on a chair with the vampire spinning on the chair next to him.

"This chair is lovely. It spins and it's soft."

I closed the door and locked it before sliding down on the carpeted floor with my eyes shut. Area 51, so far, is not as cool as I was expecting. From the outside, we see old black, white and red modular buildings connected to each other but on the inside, it looks like Silverstein. Instead of scientists, there are soldiers. Instead of scientific equipment, there are weapons. A part of me wanted to see some futuristic objects. Alien stuff. I am disappointed.

"We are fighting soldiers. Area 51 soldiers and you're in a spinning chair having the time of your life." Rami murmured with amusement. "Holy shit." I instantly opened my eyes to see what stole his breath away. In a corner of the room is another opened door, revealing a section of what the extended room holds: weapons.

I heard the sound of the keyboard from my earphones, followed by Eva's surprised voice. "Oh! Weapon room! I didn't see that. Well, you're very welcome. I'm still working on hacking the other security cameras, to see where Lysander is, but it's taking a while. It's hard. But you can't stay there for long. It's a weapon room, one of four. People will be coming."

"He's here though. The werewolf." Idris informed, still spinning on the velvet chair. "I can smell him. The scent is rather indistinct, but he's somewhere here."

I can feel it too. My werewolf's presence. I don't know how, but I can just feel it. Him. It's like a gut feeling, but stronger.

"This is a fucking grenade shooter."

Rami marveled from the weapon room. "Yo, listen. I'm not usually one to freak out about weapons and shit, but damn." I pulled myself up from the floor and joined him. The room is about the same size of my apartment's living room. Not to big. The weapons though, I'd have to agree with Rami. They look pretty sick. I mean, they're just guns and I've grown to hate them over the years, but still. Wow.

"Alright. Let's get a weapon and get out here before we get caught."

We aren't carrying backpacks, since Idris suggested we will move lighter and faster without them, so we can't take more than what we can hide with our clothes. Rami's wearing a black jacket with pockets from the inside and outside, all of which are roomy, but I only have two from my leather jacket and they do not have much space. It can barely hold my phone! I have the taser gun on my pants' back pocket. But then I suppose, we don't have to hide the weapons...

"Screw it."

I took another taser gun, earning a laugh from Rami, who got himself a much bigger weapon that he had already strapped on his body. "There's a grenade shooter, machine guns, pistols, so many other weapons and you go with a taser."

"Well, I like it." I defended, running my fingers over my choice of weapon. "What about you?"

"A tranquilizer gun."

"There's a grenade shooter." I mocked his tone. "Machine guns, pistols, and you go with a tranquilizer gun." He parted his lips to reply but I didn't give him time. "But that's great. We're not killing soldiers. Just knocking them out. We aren't one of those assholes."

"That's right." Eva says proudly through my ears, making me smile confidently. I miss her. But I'm also going to scream at her when I get back. She's getting married!

"Idris. You want anything?"

Idris rolled his crimson red eyes. "I am more powerful than your human toys."

Well, he's not wrong. "You literally could have just said 'No' and saved your breath." Rami retorted. "Anyway, let's go."

Right after we exited the room, we are blocked by three soldiers. A second of eye contact and they jump to attack us. A soldier pulled out a gun and pointed it to my face but I went straight for her neck and chest using the two tasers I now hold. The soldier's body wriggled in pain before falling on the ground. The same thing happened with the other two: one soldier shot in the neck with a dart from the tranquilizer gun, and the other soldier with a red spot on their face. I suppose a vampire's punch is much more severe than the best human boxer's.

"Less than a minute and they're all out." Idris smirked, putting his hands on his pants' pockets casually. "Not bad, humans. Not bad at all."

And we were just getting started.

The three of us are squished in one small corner of the room as a group of five came in a room that we were exploring. We found a room full of chemicals. Heavy, explosive chemicals. A laboratory. Two people wearing lab coats and three soldiers. I don't know how far we are in the base but the farther we go, the bigger the rooms are and the stranger the surrounding looks. Instead of seeing just weapons, we started seeing the futuristic technologies I was hoping to see, torture devices, and now, explosive chemicals. This is a military base, after all. Toxic gases are not strangers in the field.

"How's the weapon going?" A soldier asked a man with a white coat. "We need to know if the formula works so we can share them to the other branches."

"It's still not done. We're working on it." The assumed chemist responded with fear in his eyes. "We will finish it soon though. We've just been busy with other things."

"Like what?" Another soldier snarled. "What could possibly be more important than making a bomb?"

I wanted to make a comment. I really did. I wanted to make a noise to express my irritation but I couldn't. Although, our vampire didn't resist like I did. He made a disgusted noise that gave away our hiding spot. The people couldn't see us, but they clearly heard Idris. "Who's there?" One of them asked, walking over to our corner.

"Fuck, damn it, mosquito." Rami hissed at the male who did not look bothered one bit. "It's okay. I got this." He took a deep breath. "I hope." He closed one eye and aimed for the soldier that was coming our way, who immediately dropped to the ground. The other soldier rushed towards us and Idris simply blocked him and kicked his legs, bringing the man to the ground. I quickly crawled to the fallen soldier and shocked him with the tasers until he stopped moving.

Rami took care of the remaining three and continued. We searched the place for a little more, giving Eva time to look through the cameras for the werewolf. The three of us looked through rooms, turned to every hallway and fought every soldier who find us until we reached a dead end.

"Eva."

"I know." Her worried voice rang through the earphones, along with her fingers hitting the keyboard. Idris checked for Lysander's scent but he said it's still not clear enough, but definitely stronger than before, which means we are getting closer closer. "I have looked through just about every camera in the building and I didn't see a wolf or Lysander. Not even a cage!"

"Well, that doesn't make sense because he's here." I might just take a soldier and make them cry for information. That sounds like a good plan. "Idris. Find a soldier and put him in a room. We're going to do some questioning."

"Are you sure?" Rami hesitated. "We're trying not to interact with them."

"I know, but right now, that's all we've got."

"Fine, but - "

The entire place suddenly turned dark. Completely dark. No lights at all. I could not see a thing, until red glowing eyes appeared in front of me. "Idris?"

"Something just happened." The vampire's eyes blinked, looking around while sounding confused. "His scent. Your mate's scent just got way stronger. He's close."

Right as he said the last word, a booming alarm played everywhere and red lights began to flicker from corners of every hallways. "Fuck!" Rami and I covered our ears while Idris tried to ignore it, but using his ears to listen for something. His eyes widened with shock. I could barely see his face due to the red flashing lights, but I could see the shock in them.

"He's here."

Those two words were immediately followed by footsteps, screams and crashing noises. A sense of familiarity hit me as people burst out of nowhere. We are at a dead end but these people, a lot of them, appeared like magic. Where did they come from and why are they running?! They aren't soldiers, but scientists. Some are wearing uniforms and some are not.

We are on the way of those people. They are running at full speed and there's so many of them, so the three of us merged in the panicking crowd. No doubt, they saw us. They saw us, the intruders, though they did nothing but continue running. Whatever the hell just happened, it must have been so serious that they did not care for us.

"Run!"

"Get out!"

I was being dragged from different directions and I could not see over or through the crowd. I could not see Rami or Idris. "Drew! Where are you?" Rami's voice came so far away from me. "Idris?! Drew!?"

"Eva! Can you hear us?" I asked loudly through the screaming but I couldn't hear anything. I pulled out my phone from my pocket to see that we had lost communication. "Shit." I made an attempt to move through people but I was being pushed around, causing me to drop my phone. "Fuck!" I crawled after it, seeing my phone get stepped on. No one can get their hands on this. They will track it and find Eva, if they already haven't.

I picked it up from the floor when I came to the end of the crowd. The flashing red lights stopped along with the alarm. More footsteps are coming and I didn't know where else to go. I lost Rami, Idris and Eva, so I ran to the nearest room I could find. I used my hands to feel the walls, to find a room, and found one that is locked. However, it's all I can find, so it'll have to do. I used the end of the taser gun to smash the glass window of the door and unlocked it from the inside, inserting my hand through the hole.

I got inside and cowered in a corner. I don't know where I am or what is around me, but it seems that no one is there. I'm under a table, right next to something like a cabinet. I fixed the hood on my head and fixed my jacket tighter around me as I hid my face to my knees. My chest tightened and my breathing grew unsteady. I can't see anything. All the noises disappeared. It's just me in the darkness.

I waited for help. For Idris. For Rami. Even a soldier, to find me. Yet none of the above came.

No one came until about ten minutes later. I did not hear footsteps, but a chilling, low growling. It started off from the outside of the room, echoing from the hallway, then it became louder by the second. And then, it was in the same room as me.

***

It felt like the longest seconds of my life. Waiting, cowered in a corner with my eyes closed until the growling is in front of me. I feel heat radiating from it. When I opened my eyes, I find red ones staring back at me. But it wasn't the same. Not the same feeling I felt when it first happened in Silverstein, when he found me for the first time. There was something wrong. It's him, but it did not feel like it is.

I watched as the man with black hair and red eyes with scars on his left side of face leaned closer to me. He inhaled and blinked before rumbling with a husky voice, "Mate." Just like he did before, his nose found my neck. Every muscle of my body is frozen. He sounded the same. He looked the same. But he didn't feel the same.

"Lysander?" I whispered with uncertainty. His red eyes sharpened and his teeth blared. "Lysander. It's me. It's Drew. Andromeda." His eyes did not soften like I was hoping, but he didn't move away from me. I untangled my hands from each other to extended one towards Lysander's face, trying to see if he would flinch away. He did not.

However, that moment didn't last for longer than a minute as a bullet was shot from a window and targeted Lysander's chest. The werewolf roared not in pain, but with anger. He threw something from the center of the room and it made a loud noise. Then another bullet hit him in his abdomen, followed by another hit at his shoulder. The door was blasted off its frame. Soldiers with flashlights came pouring in, fully armed, all weapons aimed at the werewolf.

"S-Stop! Please don't." I found my shaky voice taking the soldiers' attentions.

I was disregarded when one soldier fired at Lysander, whose nails had scratched a metallic desk before throwing it at the soldiers. He moved so fast that none of the soldiers could catch up as he jumped to another glassed window, which he smashed with ease. Some soldiers jumped after Lysander while two had grabbed me.

"You are coming with us."

"What did you do to him?" I asked worriedly.

"17 is none of your concern." Said a soldier that's holding my wrists. "What is your business here? How did you get past our securities? Are you a spy?"

"I - " I swallowed my fear and put on a smile. "Maybe I'm a spy. Maybe I'm not."

The soldier stopped, causing the one behind us to pause as well. "Search her." The two soldiers held me against my will as my pockets were emptied. My phone had been crushed by the fleeing individuals from earlier, which is good and bad. I have no way of communication, but they will not be able to see who helped us break in. "What's this?" The soldier found one of the taser guns. I have the other one by my waist, hidden under the hem of my jacket.

The soldier's hands reached down to continue his search, and that's when I decided to make move. The other soldier is still holding onto my wrists, so I used the strength of his hands and mine to hit the searcher by the nape of his neck. I then kicked him in the shin and spun around to elbow the soldier holding me. I wasn't strong, obviously, but it was enough distraction to get the other taser from my waistband.

I paralyzed the two soldiers with it and ran out of the hallway as soon as I was free. I am absolutely out of my mind right now. "Lysander where the fuck are you?" I asked to myself as I made it out the building. I heard a lot of soldiers in one place, so I followed and saw them running at the desert after Lysander, who now shifted to his wolf form. Lysander is running so fast that none of the soldiers are even close to him, even with their hummers.

I need to get Lysander before those soldiers. "Idris? Idris can you hear me? Where are you?" I asked out loud, hoping his vampire hearing ass would find me. "Damn it, vampire! I'm here! Lysander's out there!"

"Put your hands up where I can see them." I felt a gun on my back, then it was gone after a second. I turned around and saw a soldier with a gun on the ground with his eyes closed, and Rami standing over him with his tranquilizer gun. "I'm so happy to see you!" I pulled the boy in my arms tightly.

"Come on." Idris' hands gently held onto my shoulder and waist before running and taking me out of Area 51. We are now in a land with trees, bushes, rocks and many cactus. "Lysander ran here. Look for him." He disappeared for a moment and returned with Rami. "We are going to split up so we catch the wolf faster. Rami, you have your gun. I'm not sure if that will work on him, but it's worth a shot. If it doesn't, just scream for me. Andromeda, you are his mate and a werewolf recognizes his mate no matter what. He will not hurt you. I hope."

After that, the vampire sprung away. Rami and I nodded at each other before going in different directions. Three of us against soldiers, all in the hunt for the werewolf.

***

I walked through giant cactus, tripped over boulders and sweated like a pig. I encountered one vicious snake, but not a damn wolf. I crossed paths with some soldiers, and I had to hide between boulders. Fortunately, my size made it difficult for them to see me. I am so tired of playing hide and seek. "Lysander, wherever you are, you better come out." I hissed with frustration.

Then, I froze as I heard a scream from the other side of the field. It didn't come from a soldier or Rami, but Idris. That was Idris. If our strongest team member is in trouble, that means so am I. So is Rami. I made a run for his direction, but stopped when I suddenly felt an unbearable pain in my arm. The firing of the bullet from a gun sounded loudly, along with the scream that I tried to muffle.

My eyes watered as I gaped at my right arm that is beginning to bleed. My blood came pouring down as the soldier who shot me came closer. I backed away weakly, clinging onto the taser gun.

"Stop. You cannot run from us." The soldier said calmly as he steps forward.

My arm is burning.

"Just stop running."

I did the exact opposite of that. I turned my back on him and ran with all the remaining energy I have, which is quickly draining away along with the trail of blood I'm leaving. I can't go on like this. "Ugh!" I leaned against a tree and gripped on my bleeding arm. My heart is pounding and my head is spinning.

I couldn't move from there. I stayed at that spot and listened to cries, groans, and moans of soldiers scattered in the field. From every direction. I was beginning to lose consciousness. My vision started to darken slowly, just as another soldier caught me. Her eyes wandered to my arm and cursed.
